Name: Jeremy Fair

Grade Level: 7th

Standards Addressed:
ELAGSE7W7: Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and
generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.

ELAGSE7W8: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms
effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and
conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

Description of how to implement in the class:
Students will use SWAY as a method of presentation. The students will be charged with the task of
completing a research project. Students will be provided with a list of authors. Each author on the list
will be a renowned literature writer such as: Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe, Aldous Huxley, etc.
Students will choose one author that they will then use as the basis of their research project.
Each student, having chose their author from the provided list, will then conduct research
needed to compose a short biographical overview of their selected author. Each student will need to
detail the authors birth, childhood, schooling (if any), occupation, career, and overall death. Each
research presentation should provide a detailed, yet refined, screenshot of who the author was and
why their work has become so integrated into our culture. Each student is required to write a
biographical research paper of a minimum of five pages, featuring citation and bibliography.
Accompanying each essay will be a 6 slide SWAY presentation that should serve as an overview of the
particular author’s life. Each SWAY presentation will be presented before the class.

Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): Adaptation. This is an example of Adaptation

because the teacher is facilitating the use of the technology SWAY. Students are then given the chance
to independently explore the technology themselves and integrate it into their assignment. Doing so
increases their efficiency with the software, and allows them to use the technology as a tool in the
future.
Description of the sample Sway activity used with your students: The SWAY I provided is to be a
sample biography of Edgar Allen Poe. It covers his birth, his youth, his growing up, his career, love
life, and the circumstances of his death.

Other comments about using productivity tools in your classroom: Using this software alone is
already powerful, but by pairing it alongside a traditional research platform, such as a written essay,
SWAY becomes a wonderful tool that can enhance and maximize the effectiveness of a presentation
on any given topic- especially in an academic setting.
