2017 IMA Call for Short Cases

Call for Submissions

IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) is soliciting submissions for short cases in any area of
management accounting. Professors have indicated that many cases are too long for the way they
wish to use them in class or for the class and student knowledge levels. In addition, many
professors would like cases that can be covered in less than a full class period.
The case criteria and submission guidelines are below. All cases submitted will be reviewed for
publication in the IMA Educational Case Journal (IECJ®).
Criteria:
• Cases should relate to the practice of management accounting. Those reflecting “real-world”
situations are strongly preferred. The following topical areas are especially desired:
o Strategic cost management
 Product and service costing, cost allocation, implementing strategy, profitability
analysis, activity-based costing (ABC), activity-based management (ABM), strategic
cost analysis, value chain analysis
o Planning and decision making
 Strategic planning, cost estimation, cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis, budgeting,
strategic decision making, capital investments, target costing, Theory of Constraints
(TOC), resource allocation, product decisions, differential analysis, pricing, life-cycle
costing
o Operational process management and innovation
 Flexible budgeting, standard costs, variance analysis, key performance indicators,
quality management, innovation governance, Lean production, Lean accounting,
capacity management and analysis, inventory management, supply chain
management
o Risk management and internal controls
 Sustainability, performance evaluation and indicators, responsibility centers,
segment reporting, balanced scorecard, transfer pricing, compensation and
incentives
o Business leadership and ethics
 Role of the management accountant, IMA Statement of Ethical Professional Practice,
organizational culture, employee engagement
• Word limit (case excluding exhibits): 1,000 words
• Page limit: 4 pages of narrative (double-spaced and limited to 250 words per page) and no
more than 6 pages total, including tables, figures, and appendices. Case text is not permitted in
appendices.
• Updating old IMA cases is acceptable as long as it is a significant revision and reflects current
issues and technologies.
• The case must have been used in the classroom and must be submitted in English.

Submitting a Case
• Deadline: June 30, 2017.
• Submissions of cases and teaching notes should follow the IECJ’s submission guidelines.
• Manuscripts previously published or currently under review by other publications are not
acceptable.
• All cases should be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word to iecj@imanet.org.
• Please make the subject line: “Short Case submission.”
