GEOGRAPHY: Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America and is slightly bigger in area than New York State. The country is bordered by Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south. The Pacific Ocean provides the border to the west, and the eastern border of the country is on the Caribbean Sea.
PEOPLE & CULTURE
The local people call themselves
Nicas, but most outsiders refer the people as Nicaraguans. Most people are mestizos, or natives and Spanish combined. The British brought black slaves to Nicaragua to work on plantations in the 17th century. Many Nicaraguans are descendants of the slaves.
GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
Daniel Ortega was elected in 2006 as the president of Nicaragua. The president and vice president are elected on the same ticket by popular vote for a five-year term.
Nicaragua is the poorest country in
Central America, and has widespread underemployment and poverty. Their main crops are coffee, bananas, sugarcane, cotton, rice, corn, and sesame.
ALI MONTENEGRO :
His name is Ali Montenegro and
according to his profile on Facebook he is a model, actor, dancer, conductor and singer of Nicaraguan nationality, but based in Mexico.
"With all the respect that people
who are cultured in Costa Rica deserve, but I must clarify many myths that have existed for years," Montenegro wrote when sharing the video, which reaches more than 20 thousand reactions. However, in his eagerness to "clarify doubts" he made some mistakes, which we clarify next.
It's a lie that Costa Rica has only
8 beaches, as he said. According to information provided by Alejandro Gutiérrez, member of the Costa Rican Observation Network in Costa Rica (Ronmac) there are 649 registered.
It is true that there are disorders
in the nomenclature of beaches, but the number is much greater than 8.
It is also wrong that the country
has 5 volcanoes. Eliécer Duarte, a volcanologist at the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori), said 112 people were surveyed in the last inventory, of which 5 are being monitored for their activity. The lagoons and lakes are not 4. Although there is no specific number, a small list evidences Montenegro's error. Some of them are: the Arenal, Hule, Pocosol, Rio Cuarto, Don Manuel, Fraijanes, among others.
