Time: 3 hrs. Max. Marks: 60

(Reference to relevant IS Codes are permitted, Any data, if required may be suitably
assumed and clearly indicated)

1)
a) Discuss Characteristics of Yield lines. (4 Marks)
b) Derive the expression for ultimate load carrying capacity of an isotropically reinforced
simply supported square slab carrying uniformly distributed load. (8 Marks)

2) a) Discuss about substitute frames? Discuss the analysis of substitute frames. (3 Marks)

b) A continuous beam of a multi-storey frame has 3 equal spans of 8m each. The

characteristic DL is 10kN/m and the characteristic LL is 15kN/m. Design the critical
sections of the beam using limit state method. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 grade steel.
(9 Marks)

3)
a) Discuss about various types of shear walls, with neat sketches. (5 Marks)
b) A shear wall 200mm × 6000mm is subjected to an axial load of 12000kN & moment of
11000kNm. Design the wall considering the following.
a. Using interaction charts
b. Using elastic stress distribution, design end portion of 600mm length
c. Assuming end zones to resist moments. Consider two 500×500 columns are
centrally available in end zones. (13 Marks)

4)
a) Draw a neat sketch showing distribution of reinforcement across the depth of a simply
supported deep beam. (5 Marks)

b) Design a typical interior span of a continuous deep beam using following data:
Span = 9m, Overall depth = 4.5m, width of support = 0.9m, width of beam = 0.4m, factored udl =
20kN/m. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. Sketch the details of reinforcement at centre of span
and support sections. (13 Marks)
5)
a) Write a note on types of construction of flat slabs, with neat sketches. (3 Marks)
b) Design an interior panel of a flat slab without drop or column head with the following
data. Size of columns is 300×400 mm & panel 4500×6000 mm. Storey height above &
below slab – 4m. Live load – 4kN/m2. Materials are M20 grade concrete & Fe415 grade
steel. (15 Marks)

6)
a) Write a note on advantages and disadvantages of flat slabs. (6 Marks)
b) Design the interior panel of a flat slab having equal panels of 6m×6m. The building is
braced with shear walls. Panels have drops 3m×3m. Depth at drop is 250mm and slab is
200mm. Internal columns are 500 mm diameter and column heads 1000mm in diameter.
Storey height above & below slab is 4m. Loading is as follows. Dead load – (self weight
+ 2.7kN/m2), for floor finish & partition walls, Live load – 4kN/m2. Materials are M20
grade concrete & Fe415 grade steel. (12 Marks)
