Same-Sex Marriage
In 2007, most Americans opposed same sex marriage by a margin of 54% to 37%. A new
study has found that 62% support and 32% of Americans oppose allowing gays and lesbians to
marry legally as of 2017. Until 1973, homosexuality was on the list of mental disorders.
Homosexuality was feared in America. Americans did everything possible to prevent, control
and when nothing else worked, punish homosexuality. It was officially removed from the
American Psychiatric Association list in 1973. Before 2015, same sex marriage was not legal in
all 50 states. There were still states such as Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky, Michigan,
Texas, and others who banned same sex marriage. In June of 2015, the U.S. declared a supreme
court ruling stating that same sex marriage is now legal across the entirety of the United States.
Now 62% of America is pro same sex marriage after it has been legalized in the U.S. Same sex
marriage should be legal in all parts of the world because there is no logical reason to deny
homosexual couples the right to marry even if people think it is unjust and unnatural.
Same sex marriage should be legal in all parts of the world because there is no logical
reason to deny homosexual couples the right to marry. In the article “The Top Ten Arguments
Against Gay Marriage” Murray Lipp argues, “While the production of children may indeed be a
feature of many heterosexual marriages the capacity to procreate does not determine the legal
validity of such marriages”(Lipp). Murray Lipp thinks that procreation does not justify why same
2
sex marriage should be legal. Just because other people in heterosexual marriages have the
ability to produce children, it shouldn’t be the reason to deny same sex couples the right to
marry. In another article by Murray Lipp “7 ways the U.S. Benefits from the Legalization of Gay
Marriage” he argues, “The legalization of same sex marriage affirms the inherent worthiness of
LGBT people as valued American citizens deserving of equal rights under the law”(Lipp).
Legalizing same sex marriage will allow the LGBT community to feel like valued American
citizens. It is unfair that they do not get the same treatment as heterosexual couples. Finally,
“Opponents of equality frequently make use of flawed research studies to insinuate that allowing
same-sex couples to marry will somehow harm children”(Lipp). People make claims that
allowing homosexual couples can harm their children by not letting them have a father or mother
figure, but the research done on this topic is defective and inaccurate. Homosexual couples
should not be denied the right to marry for unjust reasons. Just because you don’t agree with
something doesn’t mean you can deny the rights for it without giving a strong and suitable
reason.
Same sex marriage should be legal because once non-homosexual people see how
allowing same marriage won’t affect them personally, more people will support it. In the article
“Support for Same-sex Marriage has Grown Steadily Since Supreme Court Ruling” David Lauter
shows, “As recently as a decade ago, more than half of Americans said they opposed allowing
gay and lesbian couples to marry legally. Today, two years after the supreme court ruled that the
Constitution requires states to allow same-sex marriages, opposition has fallen to about one third
of the population”(Lauter). Now that gay marriage is legal in America, most Americans support
it. Before, most Americans opposed gay marriage. This is a dramatic change from when most
3
countries banned it. In another article by Ana Navarro “We Can Respect Same-sex Marriage and
Religious Freedom” she states, “This has been the most rapidly changing social issue of my
lifetime. Six in 10 Americans now support legalizing same-sex marriage”(Navarro). The growth
of support for gay marriage shows how people can change their views on it. If it were legal
across the entire world, there would be less opposition. In this third article “Support Steady for
Same-sex Marriage and Acceptance of Homosexuality” by Hannah Fingerhut, she points out,
“Now, just over half of Americans (55%) say they favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry
legally, while 37% remain opposed, according to Pew Research Center’s March poll. A decade
ago, the balance of opinion was reversed: 55% were opposed, while 35% were in
favor”(Fingerhut). The change in opinion for Americans shows how they finally saw this as a
good thing. The majority of opposers probably did not want to seem homosexual by their peers
for supporting gay marriage. Now that same sex marriage is legal in America, hopefully other
countries can see that gay marriage is for the greater good and legalize it as well.
Same sex marriage should be legal across the entire world because they should have
access to the same benefits enjoyed by heterosexual couples. In the article “Same-sex Couples
Don’t Get the Same Marriage Benefits as Heterosexuals in Texas” Christina Silva states,
“Same-sex couples can get married in Texas, but they won’t have the same rights that
heterosexual couples do”(Silva). Just because these couples in Texas are homosexual, they do
not get the same benefits as heterosexual couples when they marry. Their sexuality does not
justify whether or not they get the same benefits as other couples. This is very unfair and
unreasonable. Secondly, “The issue made it all the way to Texas Supreme Court, which
unanimously ruled that, while same-sex marriage is legal, the Supreme Court didn’t decide all
4
marriage related matters. So the court explored limits of LGBT marriage, and the decision’s
reach of ramifications”(Silva). The Texas Supreme Court immediately looked for loop holes
within the justice system to try and stop same-sex couples to get married. They do not want
same-sex couples to be satisfied. In another article by Amita Kelly “Texas Supreme Court Rules
Against Benefits for Same-sex Couples” she finds, “The Texas Supreme Court on Friday sided
with same-sex marriage opponents who argued that the city of Houston should not have extended
its benefits policy to married same-sex couples”(Kelly). It is obvious that most Texans are
against same-sex marriage and will not let homosexual couples to be content. Even though
same-sex marriage is legal across the whole of the United States, people are still opposed and
Because people have no real justification or purpose for denying the right to marry to
homosexual couples, same sex marriage should be legal in the whole world. Same sex marriage
is the first step to global equality. Once gay marriage was legalized in the U.S., more and more
Americans started to support it. If same sex marriage would be legal in the whole world, this
would lead to the acceptance of other things. Global equality would be the end goal for the world
