CONDITIONAL SENTENCE

Conditional Sentence (kalimat pengandaian) is a phrase used to express something that


might happen or might not happen as expected. Conditional Sentence in English always
in the form of compound sentence, the sentence consisting of Main Clause (Induk
Kalimat) and the subordinate clause (Anak Kalimat). In the form of a conditional
sentence is between the main clause by clause associated with the "if". Main clause is
part of a compound sentence that can stand alone as well as having a complete sense if
separated from the others in a compound sentence. While the subordinate clause is
part of a compound sentence can not stand alone if separated from the others in a
compound sentence.
Subordinate clause (if + clause) a statement of the terms or conditions. While the main
clause in a conditional sentence is a statement as a result of the fulfillment of (+) or
non-fulfillment of (-) requirements that exist in the subordinate clause or condition
that is the subordinate clause.

o Conditional Sentence Type 1


Wishful thinking revealed about an action or situation in the future. The
act or state can be realized or occur if the conditions are met (If ...).

Formula : If + Simple Present, will + verb I

IF + S + V1/to be, S + WILL + V1/be


If clause/sub Main clause/induk

Example :

1. If I see Hary, I will call him.


2. If Tara is not sick tomorrow, I will invite her to my party.
3. If I graduate this year, I will go to Singapore for holiday.
4. If Henri bring me the book, I will study hard.
5. If I have free time, I will go swimming.
6. If the bell rings, I’ll go home.
7. If you meet Andy, ask him to call me.
8. If you don’t finish your homework, your teacher will be angry.
9. If he doesn’t come, I won’t be angry.
10. If he comes, I won’t be angry.
11. If they invite you, will you come?
12. If you give me money, I will help you.
13. If you help me, I will give you money.
14. If you leave your sister alone, she will miss you.
15. If our team win the match, we will be very happy.
16. If Joni camps, he will build a campfire.
o Conditional Sentence Type 2

Conditional Sentence Type 2 is used to declare events that may not occur
because the conditions may not be met. This phrase is used to talk about the
fact that contrary to the present.

Formula : If + past tense, would + verb I

Example :

1. If I were you, I would be very angry.


2. If I were Superman, I would fly to the moon.
3. If I married Anna, I would be very happy.
4. If I were an entrepreneur, I would get money easily.
5. If you followed my instructions, you would be safe.
6. If my friend came here, would you be surprised?
7. If Rai became a politician, he would be president.
8. If Riana told my father, what would we do?

o Conditional Sentence Type 3


Conditional sentence type 3 discusses an event that is not likely to
happen. Because the events happened in the past so it is unlikely to
happen.

Formula : If + past perfect, would have + verb III

Example :

1. If her grandfather had immediately taken to the hospital, he would have saved.
2. If Jono had studied hard, he would have passed the exam.
3. If my uncle had got the job, he would have been a manager
4. If I had married Tika, I would have lived happily.
5. If Rai had become a politician, he would have been a president.
6. If my friend had come here, he would have given us a delicious pizza.
7. Riana had told my father, we would have a big problem.
