Clue # 1 – “George Edward Challenger”

This was the name of the main character in the other major work (“The
Lost World”) of our mystery person.

Clue #2 – The Second Paragraph of the Story.

All of the biographical data is the actual biographical data of our mystery
person.

Clue # 3 – The Dancing Men Cyper

Decoded using the key above it reads: BEWARE OF MY RETURN FROM

HELLS FIRE TO WELLS BRANCH I AM AC DOYLE

At last!! Our mystery person is supposed to be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The
famous creator of the Sherlock Holmes stories, and in real life nothing like
Dr Wellsport. The “Dancing Men Code” (a clue in itself) first appeared in
the book The Return Of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1905.

Clue # 4 – The Illustration.. “No one has ever been able…”

This is the original illustration that appeared with the story “Adventure of
the Dancing Men” When it was first published in The Strand Magazine.
That’s the original Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur's most famous character)
looking at the piece of paper, with his famous sidekick Dr. Watson looking
on.

Well, that’s about it. Hope you liked my little story. Wait! Forgot to tell you
what the cyper at the end of the story said:
GOOD LUCK! GEORGE KOEHLER
That’s me! Have fun, and check out the works and life history of the real Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle who was, in real life, as it says on his tombstone:

STEEL TRUE
BLADE STRAIGHT
KNIGHT
PATRIOT, PHYSICIAN & MAN OF LETTERS
I was about to publish this when it occured to me
that if you have read this far you might be interested in knowing
a few other curious things.
The Necronomicon is actually a fictional book that first
appeared in the story “The Hound” by the great horror
writer H.P. Lovecraft of which this story pays homage to.
Some other authors such as Clark Ashton Smith and August
Derleth (1st publisher of HP’s works) referenced it in things
they wrote. Soon folks actually believed it to really exist
and started asking for it at libraries etc. To capitalize on
this several people created hoax versions over the years.
Lovecraft always insisted that he made it up.
In May 1903 Conan Doyle was vacationing at Hill House
Hotel on the Norfolk coast when he met GilbertCubitt,
he was the seven year old son of the hotel proprietor.
The boy had shown Doyle a dancing men code he used
to communicate with his cousin by writing his name in an
autograph album. Doyle took this idea and with some help
from Edgar Allen Poe’s story “The Gold Bug” worked out
his own code which became the basis for his story “The
Adventure of the Dancing Men”. By the way, if you read the
story you might notice that a character, Mr Hilton Cubitt
has a name that you may recognize if you have been paying
,

attention to what I have just written.

Is there really a Wells Branch Community Library? Yes! It

is located at 1701 Wellsport Drive, Austin, Tx. If you don’t
believe me look up their web page. Is it haunted? Well, the
burglar alarm sometimes goes off at night for no reason,
and some strange things were seen. Was a capsule found
during constriction, and is it built over the old cellars of
Dr. Wells? Well, funny you should ask but….wait – I’m
running out of space here. Have to leave that for some other
time, besides what is a good mystery if I give away all the
answers?
If you liked all of this you might want to search for my
story “Sarah’s Lamp” , sort of a Christmas story of faith and
hope and love. I like it a lot. (But of course I did write it, so
you have to more or less expect me to say that). (It did win
1st prize in a writing contest!!!) (It is only 3 pages, so if you
have an attention deficit disorder you can probably reach the
end)
Thanks! George Koehler
