2.4 StompIO Software Installation Introduction
StompIO system is a Hardware/Software combination.

In order to use StompIO either live or in the studio you will need a Mac or PC com-
puter (check Installation and Authorization manual for system requirements).

You need to install on this computer all software included with StompIO to get the
best possible experience.

There are two main software components you need to install first to properly oper-
ate StompIO:

• StompIO System Drivers (Windows only)

• AmpliTube X-GEAR

There is no need to install any StompIO System Drivers on Mac because StompIO
will use Apple OS X USB Audio System Drivers.

2.5 StompIO Power On Check

Before starting to install the software please connect the included power supply
unit to a mains outlet, then connect the DC plug to the StompIO unit and press the
Power button to turn StompIO ON (see 2.2 - StompIO rear panel).

DO NOT CONNECT ANY COMPUTER TO THE USB PORT YET.

The following screen will appear.

ON YOUR PC TO THE USB PORT ON STOMPIO (see 2.2 - StompIO rear panel).
IMPORTANT: NEVER CONNECT STOMPIO TO AN USB INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL
HUB. MAKE SURE YOU’RE CONNECTING STOMPIO TO A DIRECT USB PORT ON
YOUR PC (as an example on most desktop PCs you will need to use the USB
ports on the back of the machine, not on the front as these are most probably
connected to an internal hub).

• From the “AmpliTube X-GEAR” CD open the StompIO Windows XP-Vista Drivers
folder and double click the icon “Install StompIO Drivers.” Follow the instruc-
tions that will appear on screen.

Once the drivers installation finishes you can turn ON StompIO and the following

2.8 The StompIO System structure
This section explains how the StompIO system is structured and how all elements of this systems interact with another.

The main elements composing the StompIO system are:

• StompIO-1 USB Floor controller and audio interface

• Mac or PC host computer (see Installation and Authorization Manual for system requirements)
• AmpliTube X-GEAR software installed on the Mac or PC computer.

StompIO

StompIO is a USB Audio Interface and Controller especially designed to control IK Multimedia “Powered By AmpliTube”
software modeling processors.

StompIO is designed to work in combination with a core software application called “AmpliTube X-GEAR” that runs on the
host computer.

With StompIO you can easily:

• Go onstage without amplifiers & stomps pedals, only your computer and StompIO, and still have access to 100s of ex-
tremely accurate digital models of sought-after gear pieces, with a convenient small footprint, all in one device. Bring
the same sounds onstage that you use in your productions, create custom controls for each Patch and lots more. All this
without having to look at the computer screen at all.
• Go in the studio and remotely control all your favorite “Powered by Amplitube” processors within the AmpliTube X-GEAR
“shell”. You will be able to use StompIO as a remote controller for AmpliTube X-GEAR hosted by your favorite Digital Audio
Workstation or, at the same time, use it as an extremely high quality ASIO or CoreAudio interface for your favorite DAW.
Even if you don’t intend to use StompIO as an audio interface (because, for example, you’re using Pro Tools®) you can still

StompIO

AmpliTube X-GEAR performs the following tasks:

• Provides audio input - output from and to StompIO.

• Provides all the functionality you see on the StompIO screens. StompIO’s foot controller cannot be used without having laun-
ched AmpliTube X-GEAR on the host computer, as these functions are controlled by X-GEAR. However, StompIO’s ASIO/Core
Audio-compatible USB interface functions can be used by another application even when X-GEAR is NOT launched.

2.9 About StompIO Patches
When playing through StompIO you will normally switch among various Patches
to change timbre and sounds during your performance.

StompIO can directly address up to 4,000 patches while in PLAY mode.

Patches are divided into 1,000 Banks (numbered from 000 to 999) containing 4
programs each (A, B, C, D).

The PATCH NUMBER display (see 2.1 - StompIO front panel) shows the Bank num-
ber and the Program, for example 000A or 512C.

2.10 StompIO Patches and X-GEAR Presets

Like all “Powered by AmpliTube” modeling software AmpliTube X-GEAR has a
large collection of Presets that can be modified and saved by the user.

The AmpliTube X-GEAR Presets work pretty much the same as you’d expect from
plug-in Presets with one important addition: they can be copied to StompIO Patch-
es.

This means that from either the on-screen AmpliTube X-GEAR interface or directly
from the StompIO panel, it is possible to browse among all AmpliTube X-GEAR
presets and to COPY them to any of the StompIO 4,000 patches.
From this moment on, that Preset has been copied to a StompIO Patch and can be
modified and saved independently from the original Preset it was created from.

Thanks to StompIO’s display, it is possible to copy presets to patches, and to mod-

ify, save, rename, move, or overwrite patches, all without the need to connect the
computer’s monitor.

2 - Quick Start 21

2.11 AmpliTube X-GEAR Installation
On both Mac or PC you can now install AmpliTube X-GEAR by following these few
steps:

• Open the “AmpliTube X-GEAR” CD

• Double click “Install AmpliTube X-GEAR” and follow the instruction that will ap-
pear on screen.

Please note that AmpliTube X-GEAR woks as a standalone application and as a

multi-platform plug-in.
AmpliTube X-GEAR delivers only a basic set of stomps, amps and cabinets, but it’s
enough to start playing with StompIO for the first time. If you prefer, you can also
go to the next section to install all “Powered by AmpliTube” software packages.

2.12 “Powered by AmpliTube” products installation

Once you have installed AmpliTube X-GEAR you can proceed with installing all
other “powered by AmpliTube” software packages included with StompIO.

To do so, simply insert each product’s CD into your computer’s CD-ROM drive and
double click on all appropriate installers. This will add these models to the Ampli-
Tube X-GEAR shell, allowing you to play with many other amps, stomps, cabinets
and effects, and to cover one of the widest possible guitar and bass tonal spec-
trums on the market.

For further reference, please refer to each “Powered by AmpliTube” product’s In-
stallation and Authorization manual.

22 2 - Quick Start

2.13 Playing StompIO for the first time
Now that you have completed installing and connecting StompIO, and all needed
software is installed, let’s play! Turn on StompIO, go to your applications (or pro-
grams) menu and launch “AmpliTube X-GEAR”.

If the StompIO drivers are already installed and the StompIO is connected and
turned ON, your AmpliTube X-GEAR audio configuration will already be set for
StompIO, without the need to set up anything on the Audio Setup window in Am-
pliTube X-GEAR.

The AmpliTube X-GEAR default audio settings are optimized for low latency and
good performance. The default audio settings for the StompIO audio interface
are:

• Windows: 144 samples buffer-size, 48 kHz sampling rate

• Mac: 128 samples buffers-size, 48 kHz sampling rate

On most computers, these settings will deliver the optimal compromise between
low latency and great reliability.

However, if you would like to change these settings in AmpliTube X-GEAR stand-
alone, select Settings > Audio MIDI setup.

If you experience audio pops or clicks while playing, try increasing the buffer-size
value to the next higher step.

If your computer is very powerful and the 144 or 128 value is working perfectly,
you may even try setting this value to 96 (Windows only) or 64 (Mac only) for an
even faster response. However, this is not advisable on most computers and should
not be used as a standard setting for live shows unless you extensively test for reli-
ability beforehand.

control to balance the level of dual Cabs rigs between one Cab and the other.

• Knob 5: Mix. This is normally at zero as it mixes the signal captured by the Cab
model microphone with the direct signal taken from the Stomps output. This is
mainly useful with bass amps to mix the direct signal with the cabinet one, but
can be interesting on certain kind of guitar sounds as well. This control has to be
used in conjunction with Phase.

• Knob 6: Phase. This is normally set at zero (center) as this value can go positive
or negative. By adjusting this parameter to positive values you are delaying the
Cabinet signal by the amount that is displayed in milliseconds.
By adjusting this parameter to negative values you are delaying the direct signal
by the amount that is displayed in milliseconds.
Use this control with dual Cabinets setups to, for example, create stereo sounds
by delaying one cabinet (so use positive values) by a few milliseconds in respect
of the other one.
You can use this control to experiment with delay between the Direct and Cabi-
net sounds on bass sounds.

2STEP mode is also really useful when you need to make instant jumps between
Programs that do not belong to the same Bank (like for example 002C and 050A).
In this case 2STEP is the only PLAY Mode that allows for instant sound change
without loading other unwanted Patches in between.

3.10 Sound Controls: Patch Macros
With StompIO, you have access to the most important six parameters on each Patch
during performance. These parameters are called Patch Macros, from 1 to 6.

These six Macros are directly controllable by the six StompIO Knobs positioned
right below the LCD display.

The lower part of the display indicates the function of each Patch Macro.

Patch Macros are useful when you need to have instant access to sounds param-
eters without having to enter EDIT mode.

Each Patch Macro can control up to 4 sound parameters at the same time, with dif-
ferent ranges and directions, so a 4 Patch Macro can be used to control any aspect
of the sound.

two pedal switches are connected to the first four External Controllers StompIO inputs with External Controllers
in the example below. By using the StompIO external controller in-
puts with expression pedals like the one in-
cluded or with external foot switches you can
do things like:

• Change a Pitch Shifter interval (for exam-

ple switching between major/minor 3rd) by
pressing a temporary foot-switch.

• Control a Delay FX level during a solo

Expression Pedals/Switches ... and more!

These external controllers can be both expression pedals (continuous) or pedal

switches. Both can be connected to one of the 6 connectors on the rear StompIO pan-
el and used to control any kind of sound parameter in your AmpliTube X-GEAR rig.

The pedal included with StompIO is a rugged metal continuous expression controller
that you can use to control volume, wah, pitch shift... any kind of sound parameter you
would like to change during performance.

Each one of these external controllers can be used to control up to four sound param-
eters at the same time with different ranges, curves and direction, for greater flexibility,
and makes it possible to create unique interactive effects, from a basic Wah effect to the
most complicated, evolving textures and sounds.

All of this is of course stored in the Patch and can be set specifically for all Patches you
need.

3.16 Typical StompIO setups and connections
The following paragraphs explain how to connect StompIO in most common live or studio situations.

Using StompIO on-stage direct to the PA system

With StompIO you can play on-stage without heavy amps and cabinets, feeding your processed stereo signal directly to the
PA system.

When you play live and need to send the StompIO output signals to the PA mixers always use the StompIO balanced outputs.
These outputs are high level and are capable of driving long cables without adding any noise (if the inputs on the other side
are balanced).

Also use these connections when you are sending your signals to the monitors mixer, if you are hearing yourself with
wedges or with in-ear monitors. The PA engineers will then split the signals to be sent to the front of house mixer.

You don’t need any D.I. boxes because the StompIO balanced outputs are designed to be connected directly to your mixer or
PA system.

Using StompIO on-stage with one or more guitar cabinets

With StompIO you can play live without amps and cabinets, but if you prefer using real guitar cabinets you can do that easily
as well by using a mono (or stereo if you have two cabinets) power amp.

We recommend using a tube-based power amplifier designed specifically for guitar or bass as this will preserve the tube
modeled tone of AmpliTube X-GEAR better than solid-state power amplifiers. However, solid-state amps will work without
problems and may be used as well.

Check the input of your Power Amp and use StompIO Unbalanced or Balanced outputs depending on the power amp input type.

On this setup you will need to capture the sound (for both live or studio) with microphones in front ot the guitar cabinets as
you would do with a regular amp setup.

Remember that AmpliTube X-GEAR presets and StompIO Patches always includes a section that emulates the sound of vari-
ous guitar Cabinet models.

This is intended to be recorded as is, or to be sent to the PA and full-range monitoring system without any processing, but
in this case you are sending it to a real guitar cabinet (or more). For this reason, to get the best possible sound it is VERY
important that all guitar cabinets emulation inside all AmpliTube X-GEAR Presets are TURNED OFF.

To do that easily without having to modify all your patches, follow these simple steps:

Using StompIO in the studio to control your AmpliTube X-GEAR plug-ins

StompIO can be used in the studio to control all AmpliTube X-GEAR plug-in instances used on the Digital Audio Workstation
session you are working on.

You can also use StompIO as an Audio Interface for your Digital Audio Workstation if it supports the ASIO standard (Win-
dows XP and Vista) or the CoreAudio standard (Mac OS X).

Just go to the Audio Settings window on your DAW and select the ASIO or CoreAudio StompIO drivers. From this moment on
the Main output for your DAW will be sent to the StompIO Bal/Unbal and Headphones outputs, and the StompIO instrument
input will be available on your DAW for recording.
