Folk Culture Webquest

1. Explore TWO of the following folk cultures using the following website http://www.beforethey.com/
First describe the images of how the people dress, what they might do, and what the cultural landscape
& environment are like. Then read about them on the website as well as at least 1 other reputable
website, determine 2-3 key aspects of this folk culture AND what are 3 reasons why their folk culture is in
danger of becoming extinct?

under Monday’s assignment and create an EdPuzzle account and join my AP HuGs classroom. Watch the
TED talk by Jimmy Nelson and answer the questions throughout the video.

4. Case Study: Mongolians – Human/Environment Interactions

housing, plus at least 1 other section of your choice. From these sections – how do/did
Mongolians interact with their environment? How does this exemplify folk culture?
Ø From this article Ethnic Mongolians in China concerned about cultural threat, what are the
concerns of the ethnic Mongolians? Why are changes occurring? What AP HuGs themes and
concepts can you pull from this article?
Ø If time, SKIM: Mongolian Culture Struggles to Survive in Changing Inner Mongolia, what does
the woman being interviewed explain about the Mongolian perspective of what’s happening in
China? What AP HuGs concepts does she address? (List at least 3 with specific examples from the
article).

5. Case Study: Inuits – Spatial Isolation

6. Case Study: American Indians – Forced Assimilation


Ø Listen to this NPR podcast (7 minutes) and jot down 3 take-away ideas. While listening, you can

Ø In the early 2000’s the UN started investigating the U.S. and its treatment of the indigenous
population – here is one article: What are some of the issues the UN has with treatment of
American Indians? (Give 3 specific issues). What do you think the U.S. could do to rectify some of
the wrongs in treatment of the indigenous population?
Ø Find an article about how American Indians have fought back against a loss of their culture. Cite
the source and summarize in 2-3 bullet-points.
