 What is recruitment and selection?

1) Recruitment: Recruitment is the process of identifying that the


organization needs to employ someone up to the point at which
application forms for the post have arrived at the organization. It is the
first step of staffing process, that discovering the potential applicants for
actual or anticipated organizational vacancies.

 Griffin: “Recruitment is the process of attracting qualified person to


apply for the jobs that are open.” (R. W. Griffin: management 5th edition)

2) Selection: Selection is the process that consists of the involvement in


choosing from applicants a suitable candidate to fill a post. In this
process the candidates are selected for the require post according to their
abilities and qualification. It is not only the process of selecting the
candidates but also involves with promotion, discharge etc.

 R. M. Hodgetts: “Selection is the process in which an enterprise


chooses the applicants who best meet the criteria for the available
position.” (R. M. Hodgetts)
 Distinguish between recruitment and selection.

 Both recruitment and selection are the two phases of the employment
process. The differences between the two are :
