CHAPTER I

The Problem and its Background

INTRODUCTION

This research examines the issues of the relation between Social Media and its

impact on behavior change of the youth. Children are becoming more powerful through

technology, because technology has the ability to unite them. According to Susan

Greenfield (2010), an Oxford University researcher in her article “The Quest for Identity

in the 21st Century”, on Daily Mail UK 14th September, 2010, as growing numbers of

people discover the potential of the World Wide Web and as they become active parts of

it and as technology becomes even more advanced, expanded, accessible and

sophisticated, current forms of communication will transform, taking advantage of the

crowd sourcing phenomenon. This research will tackle what these social media will have

effects on the youth. How long they use it in their lives as a student and their implications

on their behavior. These tools have become valued elements of life in Kenya merely

because they opened many doors to youth and allowed them to interact freely and

markedly unlike at any other time in history. In Kenya, college and university campuses

have been hit by new generations of youth coming from high schools with quite a decent

knowledge about information technology and how to use its tools, especially cellular

phones and computers. While any technology can be put to good or bad use, depending

on the user, many parents have bought their children cellular phones and PCs so they

may use 2 them appropriately and effectively, mainly for learning purposes as well as

knowing where they are at any time and come to their help if they need it. But there are
also some negative effects, according to Susan Greenfield (2014) Facebook, Instagram,

Twitter, video games and news.com.au all provide endless distractions, as well as more

opportunities to share, connect and spout your views than ever before. Some information

about yourself and some private things about you may spread or know by others. It can

also limit your time with your family or your bonding with your family if you only focus on

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other activities including social media. According to

Alex Direnzo (2016) Anything that takes up large amounts of your time, including work,

watching TV, exercising or driving, has some impact on your health. The question is

whether social media is good or bad for us. The simple answer is that it can be both.

Fortunately, there are ways to help reduce its harmful effects while maximizing the

benefits. It also has some impacts in your health like addiction, stress etc. That’s why we

also have to limit in using it and we must use it to a worthwhile thing.

Technology has always been continuously progressing up to the point that the

rapid growth and advancement of technology has made the impossible penetrable.

Technology can be seen all around us. Technological advancement had proved its worth

in helping people in making their jobs easier. In making this thesis, we had to use

computers in encoding such work. Scholars are one of the beneficiaries of these

advancements in our modern world.

One of the advancement that our technology had produced is the Social Media. A

medium that spread across the globe, making communications much easier, reliable, and

convenient, creating a bridge nation to nation. Social Media had made its way on top of

peoples live. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other sites has been common on the daily
life of a common people. Social Media is now on its point of ruling where we might be

either encouraged or controlled by it.

The rapid growth of Social Media has had a profound effect not only on our

personal lives but also in our world of being. Social media are computer-mediated

technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests

and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The variety of stand-

alone and built-in social media services currently available introduces challenges of

definition. Boyd and Ellison (2008: 210-230) have summarized recent research and social

network history. The authors, Berkeley and Michigan State professors, consider social

Networks as increasingly attractive for researchers, fascinated for their usefulness,

audience size and market research potential. Boyd and Ellison explain that SixDegrees

(1997) was chronologically the first social network but disappeared in 2000. Their

audience growth has been explosive. In April 2009, Facebook had 200 million users

worldwide: in March 2010 it had reached 400 million.

By November 2010, Facebook’s estimated audience is more than 547 million

users. Only 26% of the users are in the United States: we are facing a genuinely global

phenomenon.

In the recent generation, Social Media has become a necessity to each individual.

It makes our works easier and faster such as; communicating, researching, getting news

and so forth. On the contrary, despite of its beneficial effects it also has bad effects

brought on us. In this study, the perspective of the chosen respondents or students of

Polytechnic University of the Philippines (SHS) will be conveyed with regards to the

positive and negative impact of the said matter. The main rationale of this is to evaluate
how millennials looks at the instantaneous development of Social Media and how they

view it personally; in positive or negative ways and usage. As a Social Media enthusiast,

how do you think it affects your personal daily life positively? Are you coping up with it

well? Do you think you are using it for everyone’s purpose?

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

21st century is the era of modern technology where every people have had a

technological device, a mobile phone, telephone, television, desktop, laptops, smart

phones, etc. We live in a time of technology where these devices had become a mere

necessity, these devices allow us to across the world, making long distances shorter, it

allows us to connect with each other with just one click of a button. Technology had

become a worldwide necessity. 21st century is the century where technology is ruling in

every people’s lives.

With technology, Social Media became possible a virtual word where people can

connect, interact, and social from short distances to long distances with just a click

anytime, anywhere. With Social Media, we are allowed to travel from places to places

across the globe. We are allowed to visit and communicate with a loved one far from us.

With social media, time and space can become shorter. Social Media is a bridge, a

bridge that connects people across the world, making interaction and

communications easier, Social Media is everything thus making Social Media another

world-wide necessity.
Technology has always played an important role in human life and it has been

conducted in various ways depending on the culture and location. Later on, the roots of

social media stretch far deeper than we might imagine. Although it seems like a new

trend, sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter are the natural outcome of many centuries

of social media development.

In earlier times, the methods of communicating across great distances used written

correspondence delivered by hand from one person to another, also known as letters.

The earliest form of postal service dates back to 550 B.C., and this primitive delivery

system would become more widespread and streamlined in future centuries.

By 1792, the telegraph was invented which allowed messages to be delivered over

a long distance far faster than a horse and rider could carry them. Although telegraph

messages were short, they were a revolutionary way to convey news and information.

Although no longer popular outside of drive-through banking, the pneumatic post,

developed in 1865, created another way for letters to be delivered quickly between

recipients. A pneumatic post utilizes underground pressurized air tubes to carry capsules

from one area to another.

The two important discoveries happened in the last decade of the 1800s: The

telephone in 1890 and the radio in 1891.

Technology nowadays is still in use, although the modern versions are much more

sophisticated than their predecessors. Telephone lines and radio signals enabled people

to communicate across great distances instantaneously, something that mankind had

never experienced before. In the 20th Century, the rapid change between technologies

began. In the 1940s first super computer was created, scientists and engineers began to

develop ways to create networks between those computers, and this lead to the existence

of the Internet.

CompuServe was the earliest forms of the internet and was developed in the

1960s. Primitive forms of email were also developed during this time. By the 70s,

networking technology had improved, and 1979’s UseNet allowed users to communicate

through a virtual newsletter.

By the 1980s, home computers were becoming more common and social media

was becoming more sophisticated. Internet relay chats, or IRCs, were first used in 1988

and continued to be popular well into the 1990’s.

Six Degrees, the first known recognizable social media site and was created in

1997. It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999, the

first blogging sites became popular, creating a social media sensation that’s still popular

today.

After the invention of blogging, social media began to explode in popularity. Sites

like MySpace and LinkedIn gained prominence in the early 2000s, and sites like

Photobucket and Flickr facilitated online photo sharing. YouTube came out in 2005,

creating an entirely new way for people to communicate and share with each other across

great distances.
In year 2006, Facebook and Twitter both became available to users throughout the

world. These sites remain some of the most popular social networks on the Internet. Other

sites like Tumblr, Spotify, Foursquare and Pinterest began popping up to fill specific social

networking niches.

Today, there is an enormous variety of social networking sites, most of them can

be linked to allow cross-posting. Person-to-person communication will not be sacrifice

even though it reaches the maximum number of users in our environment. We can only

theorize about what the future of social networking may look in the next decade or even

100 years from now, but it seems clear that it will exist in some form for as long as humans

are alive.

On the other hand, Social Media became a reality to some people’s lives. Some

people are being too consumed in this technology where these innovations had become

an obstacle in doing an everyday work. Of course, there will always be two sides of a coin.

Social Media can be used positively or negatively. Social Media could be a bright place

or a dark place where people’s lives could be ruined with just one click. Social Media is

not just a place or a necessity. Social Media had become a power, it became a powerful

medium in peoples live. It can do everything with just one single click of a button. But as

―With great power comes with a great responsibility‖.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

In this research the theories that became the main pillars of the study were as

follows:

The Rational Choice Theory where each individual is encouraged by their own

goals even the good things they get and get from others. The researchers present this

theory as a match to the personal perceptions, opinions or views of millennials in the

fast advancement of the Technology and its bad and good effects to their daily life.

Neil Smelser's Rational Decision-Making Theory follows that the decision of

the people is based on their own habits and habits as well as on the condition or

condition of a situation. In this theory, they have an ability to make a decision for

themselves based on their experiences that using technology can make our lives easier.

According to Emile Durkheim in his Evolutionary Theory a society gradually

evolves from the simplest to the most complicated thing, from one form to another, from

primitive to modernization, from rural to urban living. This theory applies to the evolution

of technology from simple to advance.

The Psychological Exchange Theory by George Homans describes the human

interaction that is made up of rewards and penalties that we, researcher have

associated with the advantages and disadvantages of social media.

According to Howard Beeker's Labeling Theory, each practice is labeled or

leveled based on one's own or opinion or community perspective. In line with this theory

are the different interpretation of youth about technological advancement and how long

they will be informed about this.

On Jeremy Bentham's Free-will theory, it can be attributed to everyone. It

stated that everyone has the freedom and ability to do whatever he wants. On the other

hand, this explains why other people choose to use social media than to social

interaction.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The conceptual frameworks of this study show the variable through a schematic
diagram in Figure 1. The independent variable is the social media while the dependent
variables are the sending messages, encoding messages, decoding messages and
giving feedback.

Is Church losing the social media in battle for the youth?

Gerard Naval, Malaya, Wednesday November 16,2011

Due to the growing of social media today, the Catholic Church is fastly losing its

influence among the youth. Head of the National Day steering committee, Fr. Favie

Dallas, said yesterday

“Post-modern na ang mga kabataan ngayon. Kung dati ang simbahan malakas

ang tinig sa kabataan in this age, we might even come to a point na its not anymore the

Church age. The Church has lost in certain way” on a church-organized forum. He also

said that social media has become a very big factor. “Kapag publicized, ang tao aware

na kaya pala kontrahin ang Simbahan like what is happening to us here. Once it is

publicized, dati nobody speak against the Church. Now, others have the courage to come

out and speak their minds” he added.

Responsible Use of Social Media pushed; Internet ‘trolls’ scored

Hannah L. Torregoza, Manila Bulletin, Saturday October 1, 2016

Worried by the prevalence of misinformation and use of abusive language in social

media, especially by so-called “paid trolls”, a senator wants schools to educate, guide and

develop students on responsible and proper social media use.

Sen. Aquino, who chairs the Senate Committee on Education, proposed that

schools teach students how to properly and responsibly use new media.

Under Senate Resolution No. 173, Aquino seeks to have schools teach students

on how to determine reliability and credibility of online news and views, practice digital

safety and prudence, and create a positive digital footprint.

“Our schools can play a critical role in guiding students to become ethical and

productive digital citizens and to communicate properly and respectfully online,” Aquino

said.

In addition, learning institutions can teach students on how to determine reliability

and credibility of online news and views, practice digital safety and prudence and to create

a positive digital footprint.

“Social norms, best practices, and guidelines for social media use are still evolving,

which is why our children and the youth need guidance on proper and responsible social

media use,” said Sen. Bam.

He added that such phenomena have become a global concern now on how social

media is being used and abused to spread fake news and misinformation.
According to the Senator, this unfortunate phenomenon was observed widely

during and following the recent national elections.

As a response, some of these social media companies have initiated moves to

combat misinformation and fraudulent news that emerge online.

Recently, Facebook and Twitter joined over 30 major news and technology

organizations in the First Draft Partner Network to collectively address “issues of trust and

truth in reporting information that emerges online.”

The Network plans to share best practices and a collaborative platform for verifying

news and stories shared in social media, and promote news literacy among social media

users.

Facebook updated its News Feed to reduce the distribution of posts reported as

hoaxes in January 2015 while Twitter released new guidelines for the moderation of

abusive, hostile and offensive language in December of the same year.

According to latest data, the Philippines has the second highest social media

penetration rate among Internet users in Southeast Asia, with 39.7 million people,

representing 74 percent of its Internet users, regularly visiting a social network in 2015.
Technological Advancements and Their Effects on Humanity

Karekha Ramey, https://www.useoftechnology.com/technological-advancementseffects-

humanity/, November 12, 2012

According to the article, technology will always have a negative and positive sides

although we know these advancements are invented for a positive reason. People today

had already become highly dependent on the usage of technology and devices that

involves these technological advancement. With these advancements, it has changed our

way of living, the way we communicate, purchase product, how we learn, how we travel.

Technology has changed our lifestyle in genereal.

Mobile phones first started in the year 1995 but are no longer in demand in the

recent years due to the advancements that later mobile phones developed into smart

phones.

Technological advancements is not just relevant in the small picture of helping

people with their daily works and chorses but it also has a big role in the bigger picture in

the big industry of marketing and businesses. These advancements had saved time and

cost of production which in return is an advantage to the entrepreneurs and businesses.

The article also claimed the positive and negative effects of technology. Positively,

technological advancement had obviously helped people in making their work easier,

saving time, making communications easier, it also helped in the field of health and

education. While the negative effects is laziness. People became dependent and relied

too much on these inventions that could put a persons health at risk. The negative effects
also include the increase in pollutions which has an effect to the ozone layer that leads to

global warming.

Jayme, Waddington (2011)

According to Jayme Waddington, he concluded that Social networking among

adolescents is not just a fad rather it is part of their culture. Computers, technology, the

internet, and social networking is utilized in all aspects of modern life, even in the

workplace that's why parent or even teachers cannot expect a teen to abandon the

internet and be able to thrive in modern society. Social networking should also be utilized

as an opportunity to teach every students the skills and ability that ensure safe and

enriching use of social media and social networking also should not only be included as

a valuable tool to enhance the classroom.

P. Brady Kevin, B. Holcomb Lori, and V. Smith Bethany (2010)

In adopting social networking technologies into the curriculum the higher

educational community has been noticeably slow. Ning in Education is a non-commercial

SNSs that provide an exciting and innovative alternative for higher education educators

interested in the educational benefits associated with social networking technologies.

Results from this study reveal that for a majority of students, SNSs provide significant

elearning benefits in their courses. Educators need to engage students with a more 21st
century approach to teaching and social networking technologies can provide such a

venue. As both distance education and SNSs continue to increase, it is becoming

increasingly more important to examine how distance education and SNSs can be

combined most effectively this was contend by Ozkan and McKenzie (2008)

CYBERPORN, SOCIAL MEDIA DRIVE YOUTH TO EARLY SEX

Dona Z. Pazzibugan, Philippine daily inquirer, March 24, 2017

Youth nowadays are more engage in early sex due to exposure to pornography

and sex related content on the internet, social media and other media according to a

recent study by the Commission on Population (POPCOM). The study named "Post-

Millennial Filipinos Renewed Hope versus Risks",‖ researched about the sexual

behaviour of young adults (ranging from ages 15 to 24) in each of the country’s 17 regions.

According to the study, most boys in Metro Manila (National Capital Region) were more

exposed to pornographic materials. Almost 30 percent of the youth, mostly male, in the

capital have engaged in sex before turning 18 while the same number have been exposed

to pornography prior to their first sex. The study showed that exposure to pornographic

materials was the main factor that encouraged early sex among youths in Metro Manila.

Peer pressure, lifestyle, religion and socio-economic status were not such a big factor.

Those who had latched onto the internet and who drinks alcohol at a very young age were

more likely to engage in early sex, the study found.

THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE- A

CASE OF MALAYSIA TERTIARY INSTITUTION

Sandra Okyeadie Mensah (2016); International Journal of Education, Learning and

Training (Vol. 1 (No.1), November, 2016)

A social platform is a web-based technology that enables the development,

deployment and management of social media solutions and services. This study was

carried out with the aim examining the impact of use social media on students academic

performance in Malaysian Tertiary Institution. Nevertheless, among the six variables used

in this research, time appropriateness, time duration, Nature of Usage, Health addiction,

Friend-People connection and security/privacy problems. The time appropriateness and

health addiction has a stronger significant influence on students’ academic performance.

This is because time management plays an essential role in determining the success or

failure of an individual. This necessitous phenomenon aroused us to look into social

networking sites and why they affect fellow students academic performances. Thus

students who lack time management can easily fall prey to the negative impact which

social media platforms present to its uses. Likewise, health addiction, students who are

engrossed with social media platforms ends up skipping their meals which has a health

impact on them. Such students become malnourished and could possibly fall ill which is

will directly have an impact on students. Also, the nature of usage and friend-people

connection has an impact also on the performance of students but not as impactful as the

aforementioned variable. Conclusion drawn is that time duration and security/privacy

problems have minimal or no significant influence on students’ academic performance.

A Quantitative Research on the Level of Social Media Addiction among Young

People in Turkey

Ali Murat KIRIK, Ahmet ARSLAN, Ahmet ÇETİNKAYA, Mehmet GÜL

International Journal of Science Culture and Sport (IntJSCS); September 2015

Social media has had a strong position along with the developments in internet

technology, and it has opened up new horizons in the field of communication with its

comprehensive and interactive structure. Computer systems and following developments

in internet technology are the two major elements caused social media formation. Once

the internet technology is advanced and social media is emerged, mass communication

has begun to have new dimensions, and a new interaction field called the virtual world

has begun to form.

Today, internet users show a great interest in social networking sites like

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Google+, and they create their own profiles

on these sites. These profiles make it more difficult for an individual to stay away from the

Internet. Mobile devices also support internet access and social networking applications,

which triggers social media addiction.

Social media has caused human relationships to change. Virtual gifts, messages

and games have brought an end to face-to-face (direct) communication. Individuals have

begun to turn to social media once they have been able to communicate from wherever
they are without facing any difficulty. Growing interest in social networking sites causes

social media addiction.

In general, it is the young people who become addicted to social media. Economic

problems, psychological disorders and physical inabilities cause individuals to escape real

world, and seek solace in virtual world. This situation, however, gives rise to poor social

relationships and isolated individuals. Lack of knowledge and failure of parents to guide

their children on proper use of social media are among the main reasons triggering social

media addiction. Although social media addiction is defined as spending excessive time

on social networking sites, and inability to control oneself to access these sites, there is

no definite diagnosis of the disease. Therefore, it is highly difficult to diagnose a social

media addiction in a person. For a social media addict the distinction between real and

virtual life is blurred, and he/she nearly breaks the real life.

The findings of this study show that social media has a significant influence on

young people, which causes addiction level of the young to increase, and the time they

spend on these networks to go up. It is important to develop consciousness on social

media at the very beginning of the childhood in order to prevent addiction. At this point,

media, education and health authorities should take action together to increase public

awareness. It is also possible to mention that educational seminar and programs

organized by local governments would make an important contribution towards preventing

social media addiction.

The Impact of Social Media on ESL Students’ Learning Performance

Anankulladetch, Phasita, 2017

This study was also in relation to Phasita Anankulladetch' study entitled The Impact

of Social Media on ESL Students' Learning Performance on the year 2017. It states that

the invention of Social Media has been useful when it comes to the educational setting,

particularly on the ESL (English as a Second Language) Students. With the use of online

forums like blogs, students were sharing and discussing their new knowledge gained from

the class to their peers and co-learners online. This study came up with a result that Social

Media is an effective medium to the ESL Students to enhance and improve their speaking,

writing and participation skills.

Technology in the Classroom & Workplace

Hannah Osborne

Regardless of the year they were born, whether in 1980s or late 1990s,

Millennials’ education differed greatly from that of their parents. Whether they see

computers as an exciting budding technology or a tool they can use for learning,

Millennials’ education has been dictated by this form of technology. Smart Boards,

online textbooks, and YouTube videos have been used in the classrooms of most

Millennials at some point in their education. As the computer technology rapidly grows,

the Internet was not a trusted source for formal research, but as professional journals
have migrated online, many projects are now relying solely on electronic resources. In

today’s colleges, it is far more common for students to find all research articles online

than to use book or any printed resources at all. With the Internet constantly in the palm

of their hands, Millennials took only seconds to find their desired information unlike

using other printed sources that will take you for long. Now that most Millennials are in

the workforce (or will soon be entering it), technology ordain how they apply for jobs and

what kind of jobs are available. Website development is a field that is projected to grow

27 percent over the next ten years. Online portfolios are required for most writing or

design careers. Most available job opportunities require extensive familiarity with

various forms of technology, and Millennials are already well-equipped to handle them.

The Effects of Technology on Millennials

AUG 9, 2016 9:00:00 AM

Millennials have grown up relying on technology. Those born in the early 1980s

might remember a time without computers, but TVs were most likely a household staple,

and video game systems quickly became a major form of entertainment for young people.

The Tools Millennials Use

Since the creation of Facebook in 2004, Millennials’ social interactions have been

significantly changed by social media. Advances in technology have heavily influenced

Millennials throughout their childhood and into adolescence and adulthood.

Smartphones have dramatically shaped the way Millennials view technology.

Computers, MP3 players, telephones, calculators, maps, cameras, clocks, notepads, and

Bibles are all now contained in one handheld device.

Any information, whether it be someone’s Facebook profile or the definition of a

word, can be looked up instantly. Millennials are the largest adopters of this form of

technology; in a 2015 Pew Research study, 86 percent of respondents aged 18–29 own

a smartphone.

Greg Witto, Director of Campus and Family Life Ministry at Immanuel Lutheran

Church in Charleston, Illinois, has been mentoring and leading Millennials since they first

began entering college. He says that Millennials are ―technologically astute.‖

They understand the value and purpose of technology, quickly adapting to learn to

use any kind of program or device. However, he counters this characterization with the
