talk about events that
occurred in the past at a
specific, given time. They
are completed actions in
the past.

1. If he walked faster, he would get home earlier.

2. I wish I knew what his name was.

3. I would rather she wore a longer dress.

The simple past also has some uses in which it


does not refer to a past time. These are generally
in condition clauses and some other dependent
clauses referring to hypothetical circumstances.

Please note

Most verbs have a single form of the simple


past. The verb does not add –s in the third
person singular.

The verb “be“ changes its form.

Questions, other clauses requiring inversion,


negations with not, and emphatic forms of
the simple past use the auxiliary did.
• Basic simple past:
• Example: I/you/he/she/it/we/they helped

• Expanded (emphatic) simple past:


• Example: I/you/he/she/it/we/they did help

• Question form:
• Example: Did I/you/he/she/it/we/they help?

• Negative:
• Example: I/you/he/she/it/we/they did not (didn't) help

Use

The simple past is used for a single event in the past, and also for past habitual action:
Example
He took the money and ran.
I visited them every day for a year.

It can also refer to a past state or even a temporary state:


Example
I knew how to fight even as a child.
The dog was in its kennel.
I felt cold.

The present perfect in


English is used for actions
in the past with no
particular, specified time
given for the event or
action.

Note that these forms are present because they use the present tense of the
auxiliary verb have, and perfect because they use the auxiliary in combination with
the past participle of the main verb.
