4. What is a free body diagram? Discuss various steps involved in drawing such diagram.

5.State the principle of virtual work.

6. Two beams AC and CD are hinged at C and are supports by rollers at A and D. A hinge
support is provided at B as shown in Fig.3. Using principle of virtual work, determine the
reactions at the hinge C and at support B, when a load of 600 N is acting at point E.

1. Find out the centroid and moment of inertia about the centroidal axis IXX and IYY of a plane
section shown in Fig.

2. Find the moment of inertia of the section shown in Fig.4 about centroidal X-X and Y-Y axes.

3. a) What is the difference between Centroid and Centre of gravity.


b) Find the moment of inertia about X-X and Y-Y axis of the section shown below.

4. A circular hole of diameter 15cm is cut from a rectangular section of size 20cm × 30cm as
shown in Fig. 4. Find the moment of inertia of this section about a horizontal x’-x’ axis passing
through its centroid.
5. The boundary of an elliptical lamina is represented by

Determine the moment of inertia of this lamina about the minor axis.

6. Find the moment of inertia of the following fig. about XX and YY axis.

7. Draw neat sketch of first system of pulleys and obtain expression of mechanical advantages
w, velocity ratio and efficiency.

8. What force is required to raise the load W shown in figure? Assume efficiency of the system
to be 85%.

9. Draw a neat diagram of a second system of pulleys and write the expression of the mechanical
advantages obtained by the system.
10. State the law of machine. Derive an expression for the efficiency of a machine.

11. A machine lifts a load of 250N by an effort of 160N at another instant the same machine lifts
a load of 375N by an effort of 175N. If the velocity ratio of the machine is 20, determine (i) Law
of machine (ii) Efficiency of machine at 375N (iii) Efforts lost in friction at 250N.

Friction

1. A ladder of length 6 m and weight 500 N rests on the rough wall and smooth ground making
an angle of 60° with the ground. A force of 200 N is applied to the end of the ladder on the
ground opposite to X –direction. If the ladder is in equilibrium condition. Find the friction acting
on the ladder resting on the wall.

2. An open belt drive connects two pulleys of diameter 60 cms and 30 cms by a flat belt. The
distance between centers of two pulleys is 2.10 m. The co – efficient of frictions are 0.28 and
0.22 between both pulleys and the belt. If the maximum allowable tension in the belt is 10 Kn.
Determine the tension in the belt and largest couple that can be transmitted.
3. Define angle of repose. Show that the angle of repose is equal to angle of static friction.

4. Two pulleys of diameters 80 cms and 40 cms are connected by a belt when the distance
between the axis of the pulleys is 4 m length. Find the length of the belt required if
i) Belt is open ii) belt is cross

5. An open belt drive connects two pulleys 90 cm and 60 cm diameter mounted on two parallel
shafts 3 m apart. The maximum belt tension is 2000N. The co- efficient of friction is 0.3. The
driving pulley of diameter 90 cm runs at 300 rpm. Find the power transmitted, torque acting on
each shaft, and initial tension in the drive.

6. Two parallel shafts whose centre lines are 4.8m apart are connected by an open belt drive.
The diameter of larger pulley is 1.5m and that of smaller pulley is 1m. The initial tension in the
belt is 3kN when stationary. The coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.3. If the
smaller pulley rotates at 400rpm, determine the power transmitted.

7. Determine the horizontal force ‘p’ applied on wedge ‘B’ to raise block 'A' of weight 4500 N.
The coefficient of friction may be taken as 0.2 on all surfaces.

8. Derive the expression for belt length for open belt drive.

9. In an open belt drive the sum of the diameters of two pulleys is 60 cm. They are running at
1500 and 3000 rpm. Determine the diameter of each pulley assuming the total slip of the system
is 5%. The pulley running at 1500 rpm is the driver pulley.

10. Explain different types of friction. State different laws of static and dynamic friction.

1. Explain the difference between curvilinear motions. A particle moves with curvilinear
motion has coordinates

Determine the magnitudes of the velocity V and acceleration α at time t=2 sec.

2. When a stone has fallen a distance ' x’ after being dropped frorn the top of a tower,
another stone is dropped frorn a point ‘y' below the top of the tower. If both reach the
ground together, determine the height of the tower, in terms of x and y.

3. State D'Alembert's principle. Two bodies of weights 50 kN and 20 kN are hung to the
ends of an inextensible light string passing over an ideal pulley, determine the
acceleration of block of Wt 50 kN and tension in the string.

4. Two adjacent guns having shot the bullets; at a velocity of 300m/s simultaneously at
angles α1 and α2, for the same target at a range of 5.6 KM. calculate the time difference
between the hits.

5. State the law of conservation of momentum. Write the assumptions, made in the analysis
of constrained motion of connected bodies.

6. What is a projectile motion? Derive the expression for the horizontal range, maximum
height and time of flight.

7. Define Newton's raw of motion. A body of mass 15 kg is moving over a smooth surface
whose equation of motion is given by the relation S = 15t+3t2. Determine the magnitude
of force responsible for motion. (S is distance and t is time)
8. What is D'Alambert's principle? A body of mass 50 kg is lifted by an elevator. What will
be the force exerted by the body on the floor of the elevator when the elevator is moving
downward with an acceleration of 0.8 m/s2.

9. A shot is fired at a velocity of 30 m/s from a point 20 m in front of a vertical wall 8 m


high. Determine the angle of projection to the horizontal so that the shot can just clear the
top of the wall.

10. A body falling freely under the action of gravity passes two points 20 m apart vertically
in 0.4 seconds. From what height, above the higher point, did the body start to fall? Take
g = 9.8m/s2.

11. A particle is projected from a point on an inclined plane with a velocity of 30 m/sec. The
angle of projection and the angle of plane are 55o and 20 o to the horizontal respectively.
Show that the range up the plane is the maximum for the given plane. Find this range and
the time of flight.

1. State Work-Energy Theorem.


2. A ball of mass 2 kg is dropped from a height of 20 cm on a spring of stiffness k= 1225
N/m. Find the maximum deflection of the spring.
3. A ball of mass 3 kg moving with a velocity of 3 rn/s has an indirect collision with a ball
of equal mass moving with a velocity of 4.5 m/s. The velocity of first ball and second ball
make an angle of 30o and 60o with the line of impact respectively. If coefficient of
restitution is 0.9, find the magnitudes and directions of final velocities of two balls.
4. A train is moving along a track whose gradient is 1 in 100.The weight of the train is 6000
kN. To avoid an accident, the train is brought to rest applying breaks in250 m length
along the track. The resistance due to friction and air motion is 15N per KN weight of the
train. Find the work done in bringing the train to rest.
5. A ball of-mass 250 gms is moving with a velocity of 15 m/sec and is hit by a bat so that
the ball is turned back with a velocity of 25 m/sec. The duration of contact between the
ball and bat is 0.02 sec. Find the impulse and the average force exerted on the ball by the
bat.
6. What is the law of conservation of energy? Give an example.
7. A ball 1 kg moving at 3 m/s strikes on another ball of 5 kg moving in the same line at 0.6
m/s. Find the loss of kinetic energy during impact and shoe that the direction of the
motion of the first ball is reversed. The coefficient of the restitution is 0.75.
8. Determine the power of an engine required to lift 3000 kg water per minute to a height of
20 m. If the water is coming out with a velocity of 5 m/s. (Minor losses = 0.5 m of water)
9. Find the work done in drawing a body of weight 500 N through a distance of 5 m along a
horizontal surface by a force of 200 N, whose line of action makes an angle of 30 o with
the horizontal.
10. A block of weight 12 N falls at a distance of 0.75m on top of the spring. Determine the
spring constant if it is compressed by 150 mm to bring the weight momentarily to rest.
11. A ball of 2 kg is thrown straight up into the air with an initial velocity of 15m/sec.
Calculate the time of flight of the ball using impulse momentum theorem.
12. A body weighing 600 N lies on a smooth inclined plane. The plane is inclined at an angle
of 45 o with horizontal. The body is pulled up the plane and the Distance of 5m. Calculate
the work done in pulling the body.
