Daily Activities at Contando

Objective

 Make a stronger impact in the teachers and children at Fundacion Contando con un Amigo by
working 5 days a week.
 Increase training and educational resources improving organization of lessons and quality ed-
ucation.
Summary

GVI have supported the Contando School since last year participating only 2 days a week. However,
as the GVI Family grows and the number of children at the school grows as well, we are now able to
increase our support to the school and become more expansive in the activities we do at the school,
lessons and other activities.

Report

Every day in January (Monday through Friday) a minimum of two volunteers have been attending to
the Contando irregular school. The number of students at Contando has increased, demanding more
support for the teachers and of course the GVI volunteers.
One member of the GVI team works in a class of first and second graders every day supporting the
teacher with lessons and teaching the class some Basic English words, i.e., numbers, colors, days of
the week. Additionally, some days this volunteer takes this class independently, in the absence of the
teacher or in the encouraging of practicing Spanish. Some of these lessons include learning about
animals, including their habitats, diets, etc. Additionally, he teaches this class numbers above 10 in
Spanish so that he can then apply basic multiplication and division using these numbers.

The rest of the GVI Team spends their time in the nursery class. In this class, we have taught the
children (ages 4-5) to recite the numbers 1-10 in English. In addition, we have taught them some basic
English nursery songs like “head, shoulders, knees and toes”. Every day, we take in drawings for the
children to color in case there is not sufficient material in the lesson plan - this includes coloring in of
numbers in order to practice their ability to recognize the written symbols.

A meeting has taken place with the teachers of

Contando and the senior GVI team to broaden
the activities that the GVI team carries out such
as doing more to support the maintenance of
the school.

Going forward, teachers are going to be sharing

their lesson plans for the upcoming week so
we, as a GVI team, can see where there are
gaps in the plans and then prepare materials at
home to bring in the following day to support
the children with their learning.

The majority of the nursery class can´t write the

numbers 1-5, so the target for the next month
would be to ensure all of the nursery class at Figure 2 Helping to read and finish the assignments is part
Contando learn these and create exercises for of a daily work in Contando
them to support them with this skillset.

This has also given the opportunity to every participant of GVI Childcare project to be able to live the
impact we are making in the community.
