Q.1 A company is thinking of launching a consumable tooth brush in the Indian
market. How you will evaluate the acceptability of said consumer product?
Solution:-
“The penetration of brushes in India is very low, so more than market share, it is important to
grow the market”
As we know, oral care industry is worth Rs 4200/- crores annually and comprises of:
1. Toothpaste: 60%, 2500 crores
2. Toothpowders: 23%, 960 crores
3. Toothbrushes: 17%, 715 crores
50% of Indian population is known to use modern oral care products. It is estimated that 700
million tooth brushes are sold every year segmentation purely on price prominent.
Positioning in tooth brush market done at various levels:
1. Product
2. Packaging
3. Price
4. Reliability
SUGGESTIONS:
1. Some possible product improvisations
2. Attached straight tongue cleaner cased in the toothbrush handle.
3. Cartoons character printed on the handle to attract kids.
4. Casing the toothbrush (for kids) in a toy form.
5. Neck with adjustable handle.
6. Get a certificate by the Indian Dental Association (IDA) for the toothbrush.
7. Segregate the toothbrush types for different age groups.
8. Children - Thicker handle for better grip, bright colors and cartoons printed on the
handle.
9. Adults - Simple designs and sober and decent colors.

Q.2 Discuss the design of display you will like to have for the following purpose
(give suitable images/figures wherever required):
(a) Display of various speed limits to the vehicle drivers approaching / entering
the city.
(b) Display of consumer product in an airport.

Solution: -
a) Display of various speed limits to the vehicle drivers approaching / entering the city: -

A driver must not drive a vehicle on a highway at a speed that is greater than is reasonable and
prudent according to the conditions and hazards on or near the highway. A driver must exercise
due care and attention and reasonable consideration for other people. A driver must control the
speed of a vehicle to avoid a collision with people, vehicles, animals or other obstacles on the
highway.

Speeding is risky, but the safest speed is not always the slowest speed. If you drive much slower
than surrounding traffic, other drivers might get frustrated and try to pass you.

Speed Limit signs must be correctly fixture to ensure a speed limit is enforceable and to
encourage compliance.

A good speed limit sign board depends upon:-

1. Shape
2. Size
3. Nomenclature (text)
4. Text colour
5. Background colour etc.

In city the speed limit for the different types of vehicle is also different as follows:

1. 40 km/h in most municipalities.

2. 50 km/h in urban areas.
3. 60 km/h in school zones designated as such by the erection of signs at the entrance and
the exit, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. when children are present on or near the highway on
school days.
4. 80 km/h on most provincial highways.
5. 90 km/h on the designated highways.

b) Display of consumer product in an airport:
The display of the consumer product in an airport must be capable in term of visible,
understandable etc. to bring the consumer focus on the display.

Assure the display name, works correctly in all conditions of environmental effect, follow the
below guidelines:
1. Enter a short name that represents your business name.
2. Don't include additional text or suffixes.
3. Don't use repeated and unnecessary punctuation, capitalization, or symbols.
4. Don't use offensive or inappropriate language. Use clear and professional language.

Q.3 Discuss the design of display and control for traffic management in a metro
city (give suitable images/figures wherever required).

Solution: - The system would do this by predicting the optimal traffic routes and time intervals
for various traffic signal points by factoring in the following:

 Live traffic density updates.

 Road capacity.

 External factors.

 City road network topology.

 Location of sign board (easily detectable by drivers).

 Sign board size, shape, color, background and arrow head must be in proper standards.

 Types of sub-circle topology. (Three ways, four ways etc.)

 Electric display for night driving.

The current traffic control systems (TCS) in the metro cities of India are inefficient due to
randomness in the traffic density pattern throughout the day. Due to this, the vehicles have to
wait for a long time span even if the traffic density is very less. If the traffic signal timer
(TST) can be programmed to be manipulated with the continuously varying traffic density,
the problem of traffic congestion can be reduced to a significantly lower level.

Below are the some signs boards with information, we can use them as per our city road
requirement: -

Q.4 Explore the alternative design for gear change lever in the cars. Give suitable
explanations and images/figures in support of explanation.

Solution:-
No car is complete without a gearbox. For a car to run, power produced by an engine is to
be transmitted to the wheels (front or rear or all four) via a gearbox arrangement.

Earlier the gearshift level used to be a standard stick like a manual gearbox, with a Reverse, Drive
and Neutral slots, designed to shift in a single line, or maximum in gated (zigzag) format.

Alternate designs for changing of gears in automobiles are:

1. Stick Shifter- Used in Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, Honda Jazz.
2. Joystick/ Monostable shifter- Used in BMW 3 Series, Audi A4.
3. Rotary shifter- Used in Jaguar XE, Renault Kwid 1.0L AMT.
4. Stalk shifter- Used in Mercedes Benz C-Class, Mercedes Benz GLA-Class.
5. Push button shifter- Used in Fiat Abarth 595 Competizione, Aston Martin Vanquish.

In some modern sports cars, the gear lever has been replaced entirely by "paddles", which are a
pair of levers, usually operating electrical switches (rather than a mechanical connection to the
gearbox), mounted on either side of the steering column, where one increments the gears up, and
the other down.
Some types of gear lever changing mechanisms:

Q.7 Discuss a conceptual design of a mass rapid transport system for a city like
Chandigarh. What are the major problems that have to be solved before the project
can be started?

Solution: - The original plan of the city was based on the gridiron defined by a system of
seven types of roads, which was called the 7Vs. The system was designed to provide safe
mobility to children and pedestrians within and between the sectors, while also permitting the
benefits of fast movement for vehicular traffic.

Chandigarh’s road network is under intense pressure today due to increase in population,
explosive growth in the number of private vehicles which has increased the number of
personalized vehicles, partly due to the absence of an efficient and reliable public transport
system.

Several ways to improve connectivity and travel throughout the city and its region:
 Sixty to seventy percent of total trips should be made by public transport, with one (or
two) modal changes.
 Maximum population should be served by public transport.
 Trip origins and destination to be within 500m of public transport terminal and stops.
 Safe and convenient pedestrian/NMV facilities throughout the urban area.
 Safe bicycle lanes shall be provided to reach the public transport system, with secure
bicycle parking provided for those who do not have access to public transport within
walking distance.
 Integrated urban land use and transport system resulting in efficient and sustainable
mobility for everyone and provide greater accessibility to opportunities (e.g.
employment, education, health, goods, and other services).

Therefore, Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) can be planned in a phased manner. For
example, the proposed routes for the various corridors of the MRTS are as follows:

1. Corridor 1: Khuda Lahora to IT Park via Punjab University, PGI, Government College,
General Hospital, Sector 17- Interchange, Sector 8, Sector 7, Sector 26, Grain Market,
Transport Nagar, Chandigarh Railway Station, Manimajra, covering a distance of
approximately 16.00 km.
2. Corridor II: Sector 1 Chandigarh to Bus terminal Sector 104 S.A.S Nagar, Mohali,
via Rock Garden, Sector 9, Sector 17 interchange, Sector 17 ISBT, Sector 22-Aroma
Hotel Sector 34, Bus Terminal Sector 43, Sector 52, Mohali Sector 62, Sector 60, Sector
72, Sector 71, Sector 75, Sector 76, Sector 77, Sector 78, Sector 87, Sector 97, Sector
106, Sector 105 covering a distance of 22 km.[10]
3. Corridor III : Timber Market Chowk Sector 26 to Sector 38 and Dadu Majra along Purv
Marg and Vikas Marg covering a distance of approximately 14.6 km.
4. Corridor – IV: Housing Board Chowk to Sector 21 Panchkula, via Panchkula Sector
17,16,15,14, & 21 covering a distance of 5 km.
