1- Introduction

This project is a combination of mechanical engineering and sustainable development in

developing countries. The goal has been to build a vertical axis wind turbine which drives the
water pump. The windmill drives a pump that pumps water from a well to a tank for further use
in irrigation.

Water supplies such as wells and dugouts can often be developed on the open range. However,
the availability of power supplies on the open range is often limited, so some alternate form of
energy is required to convey water from the source to a point of consumption. Wind energy is an
abundant source of renewable energy that can be exploited for pumping water in remote
locations, and windmills are one of the oldest methods of harnessing the energy of the wind to
pump water. You can save money and help reduce air pollution by using renewable energy
sources such as wind power for your home, for drip irrigation or for livestock water wells.

2- Aims & Objectives

The main objectives of this research work are:

 The goal of this project is to design and fabricate an inexpensive wind turbine for small scale
use, built out of parts that can be easily found throughout the world.
 This project is simple and cost-effective, so that it will be possible for local farmers to use the
techniques on their own farms.
 The purpose is to enable to demonstrate and spread knowledge about wind-powered water
pump technique to farmers.
 A windmill would provide good means for showing visitors how wind energy can be used for
water harvesting.

3- Historical Background

The increase is costs of fossil fuels has greatly lead to the development of alternative sources of
Green Energy that are environmental friendly and cheaper to produce. The major resource in this
category is wind energy. The exact origin of the first use of wind power is not known, however
one of the earliest known uses dates back to 3500 B.C where they were used to drive sailboat
using aerodynamic lift. The advancements of this design were adapted to China where the first
windmill was developed and it was a vertical axis type that used sheet like wings to capture the
wind. This setup was the connected to pulleys or other transmission mechanisms to be used for
pumping water or grinding. The wind has been used for pumping water for many centuries.it was
in fact the primary method used for dewatering large areas of the Netherlands from the 13th
century onwards. Smaller wind pumps, generally made from wood, for use to dewater polders,
(in Holland) and for pumping sea water in salt workings, (France, Spain and Portugal), were also
widely used in Europe.

2
The major problem for the agriculturists at the present scenario is the energy crisis. The major
source of water for the fields is wells and bore wells. People use pumps to pump out water from
wells and bore wells. [1]The device is designed to operate at low tip speed ratios and features
blades that are symmetric about the mid-chord plane. The blades are actively pitched by means
of a mechanical system so that the chord of each blade rotates by 180º for every revolution of the
main rotor. [2]

The small-scaled wind mills have different aerodynamic behavior than their large-scale wind
mills. Poor performance of small wind mills is due to laminar separation and in turns on the rotor
blades because of low Reynolds number (Re) resulting from low wind speeds and small rotor
capacity. [3]In our project wind energy is used to rotate the wind blades. This blade coupled to
the shaft. At the end of shaft the flywheel is placed. The eccentric arrangement is provided in the
flywheel. When the blade rotates automatically fly wheel also rotates. Due to the eccentric
arrangement the rotation motion of the flywheel is converted into linear motion. [4]

4- Methodology

4.1 Theoretical Studies

 Study about the different types of wind turbines.

 Study about the different shapes of blades and their effects/efficiency.
 Study about the different kind of Gears, Barings and their mechanism.
 Study about the the different kind of water pump for wind turbine.
 Study about the placement of wind turbine.
 How to design and assemble.

4.2 Experimental Setup

 Analysis of turbine in software.

 Calculate the torque and power produce by the wind mill.
 Calculate the size of gears and number to teeth.
 Calculate the angle of blades and striking angle of wind with blades.

4.3 Results Expected:

 Improved torque characteristics on the current designs.

 Better efficiency
 Design improvement
 The design should be a low-cost model.
 High flow rate and head

5- Utilization of Results:

 Most required device at the rural places where no electric power.

 Most favorable device for agriculture.
 Conserves thousands of watts of power.
