SUB. : PRE-FLUSHING/CLEANING & CHEMICAL TREATMENT OF CHILLED

WATER – SPINE LOOP

SPINE LOOP DATA :

 TOTAL WATER VOLUME : 1,000 m3

 SYSTEM CONDITION : NEW.

 PIPE DIAMETER : _______

 PIPE LENGTH :_________

 METALLURGIES : BLACK STEEL.

STANDARD CLEANING SPECIFICATION

Cleaning Procedure...........
This specification details the steps required when carrying out the chemical cleaning of
chilled water system.

STAGE I: PRE - FLUSHING

a) Initially fill the system with fresh water and circulate systems using existing system
circulating pumps for 48 Hrs and do drain with sufficient water make up, 20% volume water
will be thrown (To remove loose light surface rust, millscale and small debris such as
cement splashes from the internal surfaces that may have entered the systems during the
course of erection). This operation is in conjunction with side-stream filtration

b) Once flushing is complete drain the water and clean out the external pump strainers.
Water will be drained to the designated

STAGE II: ACID CLEANING

a) Refill the system with fresh water from the existing potable water tank and add the
HYDREXTM Cleaner at recommended rate and check that the concentration is correct by
using a phosphonate test with a reserve of 200 ppm. (Metito/Veolia Engineer will carry out
all tests)

b) The water in the system should be recirculated by the existing pump for a minimum period
of 24 hours.

STAGE III: NEUTRALIZATION

a) The water containing the cleaner will be neutralized to remove acidity. It will recirculated
for 48 hours and part of the water pass through the side-stream filtration.

b) Upon completion of recirculation period, inter-stage flushing follows.

STAGE IV: FLUSHING

a) The water will be drained in two designated bleeding point, about 40% water will be
drained from the network. Refill the system and conduct the balance flushing.

b) The cleaner concentration should be monitored periodically until the concentration

becomes un-measurable.

pH 7.5 to 8.0
Appearance Visually clear and bright water, free from suspended solids.

STAGE V: PASSIVATION – METAL PREPARATION

a) Once the desired water quality is achieved at the end of stage IV, all drain points will be
shut and passivation chemical will be dosed using the injection skid. All water quality
parameters will be monitored to determine the progress of the passivation to prevent flash

rusting and prepare the metal surfaces for inhibition. It is advisable to passivate the metal
surface using HYDREXTM Passivator

This should be recirculated in 48 hours. Then add HYDREXTM Anti-flash chemical at the
recommended quantity and allow the system to circulate continuously for 24 hours. Then the
system should be balanced flushed.

suspended solids.

STAGE VI: FINAL TREATMENT – CORROSION INHIBITOR/BIOCIDE DOSING

At this point the drain valve should be closed, system allowed to fill completely together with
inhibitor & biocide. The inhibitor concentration should be checked.

Product Function
HYDREXTM 2510S Corrosion Inhibitor

HYDREXTM 7910 Biocide

HYDREXTM 7310 Biocide

CONTROL LIMITS

pH : 9.5 +

Corrosion Inhibitor : 1250 ppm min. as NaNO2

Iron : < 2 ppm

Total Count Bacteria : Nil

Cleaner Environment

Note: After the addition of the final chemicals, which is the corrosion inhibitor and the
biocide, the chilled water in the system, should be under continuous circulation to avoid any
corrosion formation or bacterial growth. (i.e. the water should not be stagnant at any time)
