Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

The AFS Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for Casting Alloys have replaced the
outdated MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) format and were created
to comply with OSHA’s revised Hazard Communication Standard to
meet the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). All are in ANSI’s 16-part
format and will include updated information as required by the GHS.
The SDSs also meet the requirements of 40 CFR 372.45 [Subpart C “Sup-
plier Notification Requirements” Section 313 of the Emergency Planning
and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) that mandates suppliers
inform their customers of the presence of toxic chemicals in mixtures
and potential reporting obligations with the first shipment of castings
every year to each customer.
The SDSs will assist metalcasters in continuing to meet their ISO certifi-
cation, OSHA and GHS, as well as Emergency Planning and Community
Right to Know requirements by ensuring that their records are current.

This second volume of Foundry Work expands both the geographical reach and the artistic motifs found
within large global foundries. Over the past 3 years, Michael Schultz has traveled to 4 continents and
visited 30 foundries to bring to readers his images of the men and women who work to produce the large
castings showcased in this book. In 2010 Mike was honored to receive a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow-

the Industry into Foundry Work,Volume 2: A Global View of the Industry. A labor of love was never more
evident than with this fine work, showcasing one of the noblest industries in the world.
Michael Schultz has been creating photographs for over 30 years. His images are in private, public, and
corporate collections. Among these are the N.C. Museum of Art, St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Art, The
Federal Reserve Bank, Charlotte, N.C., US Bank, Daum Museum and the Kemper Museum of Contem-

TECHNOLOGY, RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
International Journal of Metalcasting
The International Journal of Metalcasting (IJMC) is dedicated to
leading the transfer of research and technology to the global
metalcasting industry. The quarterly publication will work close-
ly with the annual AFS Transactions to keep the latest develop-
ments in metalcasting research and technology in front of the
scientific leaders of the global industry.
IJMC is published four times a year and available in print or
online. Single issues are available. To subscribe to the journal,
visit www.metalcastingjournal.com or contact customer ser-

THE BEST TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION AVAILABLE

2013 AFS Transactions, Vol. 121

The world’s foremost experts in metalcasting are represented within the
121st volume of the Transactions of the American Foundry Society. This annual
publication contains selected technical papers (presented at the 117th
Metalcasting Congress at CastExpo, April 6-9, 2013, in St. Louis, Missouri) by
some of the top minds in the metalcasting industry and academia. Up-to-the-
minute technology is presented with a focus on topics such as:
• Aluminum • Magnesium
• Cast Iron • Melting Methods & Materials
• Engineering • Molding Methods & Materials
• Lost Foam Casting • Steel
Almost 600 pages are bound in a maroon leatherette casing with gold foil
stamping of the title, date and volume number on the spine–a handsome
addition to any metalcasting library. In addition, what makes the 2013
Transactions so special are color images throughout the book. Color graphics
impart a better sense of what the part looks like; microstructure images are more
detailed; information on charts and graphs is easier to read. Included is the CD version of
the Transactions (also available as a stand-alone product.)

Cast Iron Fatigue Properties Database

for Modern Design Methods (DVD)
The material in Cast Iron Fatigue Properties Database for Modern Design Methods
was developed from ten studies done by Element Materials Technology
(formerly Stork Climax Research Services), initially as a Department of Energy
(DOE) contract and later as studies under agreements with the American
Foundry Society (AFS) contracted under AFS Research funds and subsequent
AMC (American Metalcasting Coalition) DLA (Defense Logistics Agency)
projects, along with contributed work from Chrysler Group, LLC.

This disk includes material contained in previously published (2003, 2008, and
2009) versions of the reports. The objective of the program was to develop
a detailed and well-documented strain-life database for cast iron. With the
introduction of the five new studies since the last edition (2009) and the contributed
report by Chrysler, AFS has combined all t en studies into one DVD, and restructured the data
presentation first by metal type (Austempered Ductile Iron, Compacted Graphite Iron, Ductile Iron,
Gray Iron and White Iron) and then by Grade (typically ASTM) under each metal. Work is continuing to
update with additional grades, sections sizes, and material properties along with contributed data sets.
