Wood Group Gas Turbine Services (GTS)
Mark Papworth has joined GTS as Chief Operating
Officer for the Eastern Hemisphere, bringing more
than 15 years senior management experience in the
industrial gas turbine sector to the role, gained at
major gas turbine manufacturers in both the UK and
US. Mark will be based in the GTS offices in
Aberdeen, Scotland, with responsibility for the
worldwide operations of Rolls Wood Group, Wood
Group Light Industrial Turbines and Wood Group
Accessories and Components, and the Eastern
Hemisphere activities of Wood Group Heavy
Industrial Turbines.

New Director, Sales Support for GTS in the Americas
is Gordon Gorrie, based in Houston, Texas, USA.
Gordon has been with GTS for 12 years, having
previously held various senior sales and
management roles within the company’s light
industrial turbines business in both the UK and US.
In his new role, Gordon will focus on the continued
development of GTS’ Americas Sales Coordination
Initiative (ASCI), including implementing CRM
solutions, interfacing between customers and GTS US
business unit sales teams, and providing sales and
marketing support.

Mark Celusniak has been appointed Executive Vice
President/General Manager for Wood Group Power

Another key development, highlighted on
page 3, is the award to our Wood Group
Integrated Plant Solutions business in the US
of a 12 year gas turbine maintenance contract
from Termonorte Energia Ltda in Brazil,
which is partially owned by El Paso Energy.

This contract, valued at $2.9 million per year,
involves the provision of packaged
maintenance services for three General

this issue. I am delighted to announce the
appointment of Mark Papworth as chief
operating officer for our Eastern Hemisphere
operations. Mark has a wealth of senior
management experience in the industrial gas
turbine sector gained at major gas turbine

has won a four year contract with Petroleum
Development Oman (PDO) to supply
specialist operations and maintenance support
for the client’s fleet of 31 Siemens TB5000
and TA1750 gas turbines, which drive critical
compressors and booster pumps.

turbine maintenance contract in Brazil by
Termonorte Energia Ltda, which is partially
owned by El Paso Energy. The contract,
worth $2.9 million per year, is scheduled to
begin immediately, with the work spread over
its 12 year duration.

power plant services contract with Kings River Conservation District (KRCD) at the customer’s
simple-cycle peaking power station in Fresno, California.
UNDER THE CONTRACT, WHICH COMBINES

create a flexible, value added solution for power

KRCD, said, “WGPO demonstrated
throughout the entire contracting process
that their O&M services were uniquely
different to those of other service providers.
They were able to bring solutions for O&M,
inventory management and major maintenance
together in a complete offering and on a very

offered was more than we have seen in the
industry from other providers.”
The KRCD project is the latest addition to
the WGPO portfolio of contract successes,
and represents the company’s commitment to
bringing a uniquely different solution to the
third party power generation O&M market.
WGPO provides O&M services,
technical advisory services and integrated
plant maintenance solutions to the global
energy market, including power generation
and thermal production facilities, cogeneration
plants and district energy centers. KRCD is a
leading resource management agency for the
Kings River region serving agriculture,
business and residential communities within
1.2 million acres spanning portions of
Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties in
California, USA.

As a licensee, A&C will repair a range of
Woodward products used on General Electric,
Rolls-Royce and other makes of gas turbines.
Most recently, in January 2005 Wood Group
Fuel Systems, Inc., part of A&C, and Swiss
company DUAP AG, signed an agreement to
jointly serve the diesel fuel injection markets in
North America, Canada and Mexico. Under the
agreement, WGFS will sell DUAP-manufactured
fuel injection systems and components, such as
nozzles, plunger and barrels and pump elements,
for diesel engines operated in the marine,
traction, gas compression and power
generation industries.

to maintain the customer’s two Rolls-Royce
501KB7S gas turbines packages used for CHP
(combined heat and power) applications at
the EC Wladyslawowo onshore gas terminal
and district heating facility. Signed at the end
of January 2005, this long term contract covers
all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance
for the two packages.

their flexibility and customer focus.”

also include engine repair and overhaul in the
future. This latest award of work from
Petrofac complements existing contracts that
RWG already has in place with the company
on other Rolls-Royce engine types.

Three US turbine operators have recently benefited
from the experience and expertise of gas and
steam turbine services specialist, Lovegreen Turbine
Services, Inc. (LTS). Shawn Cotter, Vice President
of LTS, which is part of Wood Group Gas Turbine
Services, outlines below the company’s latest
outage successes:
Client: Entergy Corporation
Location: Sabine Generating Station,
near Bridge City, Texas
SC comments: We were delighted to complete
this job, which involved the inspection of a
530MW General Electric steam turbine, ahead
of schedule, thanks to our induction heating
machines. This is tooling specially designed for
use in the overhaul of large steam turbines, and
enabled LTS millwrights to disassemble the unit
more quickly, allowing for unforeseen repairs to
be identified and performed without having to
extend the project timescale.
Client: Wisconsin Public Power, Inc.
Location: Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
SC comments: We carried out a ‘C’ inspection
on an ABB Type 11N gas turbine. This involved
complete disassembly of the unit and installation
of new internal components. This outage was
completed under budget and on time, like similar
inspections LTS performed in early 2004 on three
other 11N units at the same site.
Client: Xcel Energy
Location: Wheaton, Wisconsin
SC comments: We undertook a hot gas path
inspection on one of four General Electric
Frame 7B gas turbines operated at Xcel’s
Wheaton facility. All repairs and reassembly
were finalised on schedule.
Location: Granite City, St. Cloud, Minnesota
SC comments: We visited the Granite City site
originally to inspect a diffuser on a General
Electric Frame 5 gas turbine. On inspection,
we identified that the diffuser needed to be
replaced, and that in fact a full hot gas path
inspection was required. The client called on
LTS to support the entire process, including Wood Group’s new gas turbine test facility in Dubai.

has recently completed the overhaul of a 37MW
Mitsubishi steam turbine generator operated at
the Ahuachapan Geothermal Plant on Nuevo
San Salvador, El Salvador.
WGGS VP Operations, David Branton,
said, “One of our engineers made the journey
to El Salvador back in March 2004 to inspect
and test the generator, and determined that a
full rewind of the stator and rotor was required.
The 30,800lb rotor was removed from the
generator in August 2004 and shipped to
our Farmington facility for stripping and
subsequent installation of new copper windings.
While the rotor was being rewound in
Farmington, six WGGS winder/millwrights
were in Nuevo San Salvador to perform the
stator rewind, which involved installing 120
new Roebel bars manufactured by our High
Voltage Coil Division.”
“Following final balancing and electrical
testing, the rotor was returned to El Salvador,
reinstated in the stator and readied for startup.
WGGS’ Devinder Singh, Chief Engineer,
Larry Baca, Field Service Supervisor, and
Jody Robinson, Field Technician, were on
site for final testing and commissioning of the
unit, which took place in December 2004.
During 2005, we hope to perform a similar
refurbishment on a second unit at the
Ahuachapan Geothermal Plant.”

Transcanada Turbines continues to expand
IN OCTOBER 2004, TRANSCANADA TURBINES
Ltd (TCT), an OEM authorised repair and
overhaul service provider for GE and Rolls-Royce
industrial aero-derivative gas turbines,
relocated its GE product line from its main
Calgary depot to a facility in nearby Airdrie,
Alberta. The move transferred more than 30
TCT technicians, production support employees
and material coordinators to the new facility,
which houses 25,000 sq ft of shop space,
7,800 sq ft of cold storage and 8,000 sq ft of
office space. Since then, the company has also
relocated its sales department and IT support
personnel to the new location.
Pete Watson, President of TCT, explained,
“This relocation enables us to accommodate the
additional capacity we need for our continuously
growing operations. We now have a standalone
facility in Airdrie, complete with inventory,
cleaning, non-destructive testing and balancing
capabilities, dedicated to the overhaul and
maintenance of GE LM2500, LM2500+ and
LM6000 gas turbines. The original TCT plant
in Calgary is now the exclusive home of our
Rolls-Royce repair and overhaul business, which
focuses on Avon, RB211 and Spey engines.”

LOVELAND, COLORADO, USA-BASED WOOD
Group Turbine Control Services, Inc. (TCS)
is gaining an ever increasing track record in
the servicing of turbine control systems. The
last issue of Gas Tribune (December 2004)
reported on TCS’ completion of control system
upgrades for operators in Egypt and the US.
Now, the company can highlight two further
gas turbine upgrade success stories in the US
and Argentina, plus a steam turbine control
upgrade at a Trash to Energy facility in the US.
Clark Weaver, Gas Turbine Global Market
manager for TCS, said, “We have recently
completed a series of gas turbine control
system upgrades for crude oil production and
transportation company, Arguello, Inc., a
wholly owned subsidiary of Plains Exploration
and Production. To date, we have upgraded
controls on 10 gas turbines, including Allison
501KB and Solar Centaur® 40 units. These
are in operation on three offshore platforms
in the Outer Continental Shelf - Harvest,
Hermosa and Hidalgo - located approximately
10 miles off the coast of California, as well as
at the land based Gaviota Oil Heating & Power
Generation Facility, to which the platforms
are connected by oil and gas pipelines. Arguello
has demonstrated its confidence in our
capabilities by continuing to award us their
gas turbine control upgrades, and we are
delighted to offer ongoing support to this
valued client.”
The second gas turbine success story is
explained by Fidel Fernandez, TCS regional
sales and project manager for the Gulf Coast
and Latin America, “We have completed the
commissioning of a control system on two
Ruston TB5000 turbo-compressor packages,
owned and operated by Transportadora de
Gas del Norte (TGN) at the San Jeronimo gas
compression plant in Santa Fe, Argentina.
Our engineering, installation supervision and
commissioning services were enhanced by
support from our agent in Argentina, Promec,
who provided local engineering, logistics,
cabinet manufacturing and installation expertise.
The new control system includes sequencer,
governor and anti-surge capabilities.”
TCS has also completed the retrofit of a
steam turbine control system at a Trash to
Energy facility located in Islip, New York,
USA, which is owned by Islip Resource
Recovery Agency, and operated by global
energy corporation, Montenay-Onyx. Bob
Newell, the company’s Northeast Regional
sales manager, outlines the project: “The Islip
plant incinerates more than 146,000 tones of
municipal waste each year, to produce steam
and electricity. Some of the electricity
produced by the Elliott turbine generator
operates the plant itself, while the remainder
is exported to the local utility. The scope of
this job involved us replacing the facility’s
early model Woodward 505 governor control
with a new Woodward 505E controller, which
can be operated as a stand-alone unit, or in
conjunction with the plant’s Distributed
Control System. TCS is an authorised
Woodward Recognised Turbine Retrofit (RTR)
organisation, and we have implemented
hundreds of steam and gas turbine control
systems, using Woodward and many other
control platforms. As soon as the new hardware
was delivered to Islip, a TCS field service
engineer travelled to the site to remove the
old controller, install and commission the new
controller, and subsequently support the start up
and tuning of the unit. Since this project,
Montenay has purchased a similar but expanded
steam turbine control system modernisation
project from TCS for their incinerator located
at Long Beach, California, USA.”

Mark Papworth joins GTS
Mark Papworth has recently joined Wood Group Gas Turbine Services (GTS) as chief operating officer for
the Eastern Hemisphere. In his new role, he’ll be leading the worldwide operations of Rolls Wood Group,
Wood Group Light Industrial Turbines and Wood Group Accessories and Components, as well as the
Eastern Hemisphere operations of Wood Group Heavy Industrial Turbines. Here, he shares his views on
