February 8, 2018 Chaouki Abdallah, Interim President University of New Mexico | University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM 87131 Re: Retirement Dear President Abdallah: This is to give you notice that consistent with a long-intended plan, I wish to retire from my position of University Counsel for the University of New Mexico June 1, 2018. Ihave been privileged in my legal career to serve as counsel to two great public universities, the University of Washington and the University of Michigan, as well as a significant national higher education association, the NCAA. I consider the opportunity to do the same at this, another great public university and my father’s beloved alma mater, a wonderful capstone to my years of service to higher education, When I took this position in May 2013, I made a commitment to myself and my family that five years in it would be an appropriate amount of time to honor my father’s memory. [can think of no better job in the legal profession than assisting a university achieve its mission of teaching, research and community service. But now itis time to move on to a new phase in my life. I find the words Paul wrote in his second letter to Timothy a good fit for my decision, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, | have kept the faith.” I wish the University and its great staff, students and faculty every success in the years ahead.
