Unit one:-fundamentals of research method

Meaning

Research is a systematic attempt to obtain answers to meaningful questions about phenomenon

or events through the application of scientific procedures.

A research is the search for knowledge through objectives and systematic method of finding
solution to a problem.

It is a systematic endeavor that seeks to integrate and systemize its findings and concerned with
the objective verification of generalizations based on logical analysis of problems with the help
of appropriate methodologies.

Characteristics of research

According to John Best, a summary of some of the characteristics of Research are:-

1. Research is directed towards the solution of a problem. It may attempt to answer a

question or to determine the relation between two or more variables;
2. Research emphasizes the development of generalization, principles of theories that will
be helpful in predicting future occurrence;
3. Research is based up on observable experience or empirical evidence;
4. Research demands accurate observations and descriptions;
5. Research involves gathering new data from primary or firsthand sources or using existing
data for a new purpose;
6. Research requires expertise. The researcher knows what is already known about the
problem and how others have investigated it;
7. Research strives to be objective and logical, applying every possible test to validate the
procedure employed, the data collected, and the conclusions reached;
8. Research is characterized by patient and UN unhurried activity;
9. Research is carefully recorded and reported, and
10. Research sometimes requires courage.
Objectives of research

The purpose of research is to discover answers to questions through the application of scientific
procedure. The main aim of research is to find out the truth which is hidden and which has not
been discovered as yet.

Though each research study has its own specific purpose, some general objectives of
research below:

(i) To gain familiarity with a phenomenon or to achieve new insights into it. (Studies
with this object in view are termed as exploratory or formative research studies).
(ii) To portray accurately the characteristics of a particular individual, situation or a
group. (Studies with this object in view are known as descriptive research studies).
(iii) To determine the frequency with which something occurs or with which it is
associated with something else. (Studies with this object in view are known as
diagnostic research studies).
(iv) To test a hypothesis of a causal relationship between variables. (Such studies are
known as hypothesis-testing research studies).
(v) Research is intended to equip the researcher with the following scholarity.

Motivations in research

The possible motives for doing research may be either one or more of the following:

1. Desire to get a research degree along with its consequential benefits;

2. Desire to face the challenge in solving the unsolved problems, i.e., concern over practical
problems initiates research;

3. Desire to get intellectual joy of doing some creative work;

4. Desire to be of service to society;

5. Desire to get respectability.

6. To meet govt directives or policies or other employment conditions.
