Pharmaceuticals is one of our special feature in this issue. The phar-

maceuticals industry is experiencing a period of profound trans-
formation. However, there are various challenges that the industry
has to contend with. The thermal instability of many pharmaceu-
tical products, for example, imposes particular requirements on
the logistics in the cooling sector. Temperature fluctuations can
strongly reduce the effectiveness of medicine and vaccines. On pa-
ges 6 and 13 you can read about how airlines like Lufthansa and Air

European Sustainable Energy Week focuses on Heating and Cooling
A big focus of this years’ event which
attracted more than 2 700 participants
from all over Europe, was the EU’s
brand new heating and cooling strat-
egy. Obviously, ECSLA participated in
several events in the framework of the
European Sustainable Energy Week
2015. In particular worth mentioning in
this context is a workshop on “Cleaner
Cooling” and a policy event on tapping
the potentials of the building, heating
and cooling sectors in the framework
of the review of the Energy Perfor-
mance of Buildings Directive and the
EU strategy on heating and cooling.
The Workshop on “Cleaner Cooling”
was organised by Dearman, a global
technology company delivering clean
“cold and power”. Dearman describes
its technology “as cutting-edge, which
uniquely harnesses liquid air to deliver
zero-emission power and cooling.” The
first application of Dearman technolo-
gy, to provide sustainable and efficient
zero-emission transport refrigeration,
is currently undergoing trials at UK en-
gineering and test centre, MIRA.
Clean cold
The meeting heard presentations from
experts in clean cold technology who
called for a move away from the business
as-usual approach of relying on fossil
fuelled technology and uncoordinated
energy infrastructure to provide cold.
The demand for cooling is increasing
worldwide as cold is integral to modern
society and has many energy-intensive
uses:
• the food cold chain, including both
transport and storage;
• the cold chain for medicines;
• industrial-scale cooling for data
centres;
• air-conditioning;
• “Freezing and powdering” materi-
als for recycling and easy disposal.
Around the world, with the rising midd-
le classes in emerging economies, the
need for cold is increasing at a rapid
pace. In China, for example, Starbucks

At the same time as this increase in de-
mand, vast amounts of waste cold that
could be put to good use are wasted.
This happens, for example, during the
process of re-gasification of LNG (Lique-
fied Natural Gas) at import terminals.

agreed and advocated for increased in-
vestment in the R & D of clean cold tech-
nologies; a coordinated systems level
approach to thermal energy – where coo-
ling demand is considered and planned
for alongside heat to maximise resource
efficiency; and support for the emerging
Cold Economy which has the potential to
provide thousands of new jobs.
Cold chain challenge
Professor Toby Peter, Visiting Professor
in Power and Cold Economy, University
of Birmingham opened his presentation
by stating that “Cold is the Cinderella of
the energy debate” and that we should
be “doing cold smarter”. The “cold
chain challenge” is an urgent issue for
food and medical supplies – showing
how societal demands for cooling can
be met, while simultaneously reducing
its environmental impact.

Fair play
Consequently, there was consensus
among the panel and participants that
the EU Heating and Cooling Strategy
should have an equal focus on both
cooling and heating, whereas currently
it does not.
The workshop concluded with the ob-
servation from participants that cooling
was conspicuous by its almost com-
plete absence to-date in the current
Heating and Cooling Strategy debate
throughout the EU. One participant
noted that some work was happening
to explore possibilities in promoting
district cooling systems, but that much
more work needed to be done to under-
stand the demand for cold across Euro-
pe, its uses and how it can be thought
of at an energy system level.
ECSLA is committed to actively contribute
and to work together with other stakehol-
ders to give the cooling aspect of the po-
licy discussion a higher profile in the EU
Energy Union debate and in the formula-
tion of the heating and cooling strategy.

Handle with Care

Aviation is, and always will be at the forefront of technological development. Yet, the
air-section of transportation is not what makes one airline different from the other
in terms of cargo. What happens on the ground before and after the flight is decisive
especially in temperature-controlled transportation.

E
ven though transporting tempe-
rature-sensitive air cargo is no
rocket science, it presents some
challenges that need to be overcome
in order to close yet another gap in
cold chain logistics. For sure, every-
one handling temperature-sensitive
goods accepts great responsibility,
and a considerable risk. The goods’
values that are transported often
rate as much as 300 to 400 times the
shipment revenues that can be obtai-
ned.
Higher reliability requires higher investments that must achieve higher prices in the market.
Sensitive subject
Were it not for the various international
legal tools available to the airlines to
limit their liability, it is doubtful that
any carrier would accept shipments
of which they know neither the value
nor the sensitivity of the contents, and
where a total loss could be incurred
by a temperature deviation of a mere
few degrees from a given set point.
But airlines do know that a shipment
of pharmaceuticals is the result of an
expensive and complicated produc-
tion process and that in the end it
will somehow enter the human body
to unfold its designed effect. So, avo-
iding temperature deviations in the
first place is the most important, top
priority issue. Not only because those
involved in the logistics chain have
made promises or would like to avoid
financial complications, but also, and
perhaps mainly, because we all have
a moral obligation to see that nothing
goes into a human body that might

properties, just because of a tempe-
rature variation during the transit pe-
riod from production to consumption.
Chances are that one day any one of us
may have to rely on the administered
medications and that they work the
way they are designed to.
Making amends
In that context, understanding what an
air carrier can do and what it can not
do, is a first but important step to help
avoid temperature excursions. The
answer to the question as to what can
be done to improve the efficiency of
the air transportation part, might well
be: “understand where the limitations
are and appropriately adjust your pa-
ckaging solution.” Ever since the old
DC3 plied the South Pacific, tempera-
ture controlled transportation was the
thing for airfreight and one might ex-
pect that the airlines have temperature
control – under control. After all, avia-
tion is, and always will be, at the fore-
front of technological development. It
is a very process driven industry with
a high-level of built-in, redundant sa-
fety measures, and above all, it is fast
and reliable. But the air-section of the
transportations is not what makes
one airline different from the other in
terms of cargo. They all fly at the same
speed; they all use the same or similar
equipment. A 747 Jumbo of one airline
doesn’t differ much from a 747 of the
next airline – at least not technically.
Set apart
But what happens on the ground be-
fore and after the flight is decisive.
How good are an airline’s processes
on the ground and how well do they
control those processes. Can they
provide the same level of protection
at all destinations in all four corners
of the world? In the early days, trans-
portation of pharmaceuticals consis-
ted mostly of temperature insensitive
and simple medicines such as aspirin
etc. If temperature sensitive transpor-
tation of pharmaceuticals was requi-
red they were usually small amounts
that were dispatched by persons
using hand carried thermo contai-
ners. Then a number of things began
to happen:
• As scientific research began to find
remedies for more & more disea-
ses, the components and active
ingredients became more complex
and thus more sensitive to tempe-
rature changes;
• shipment sizes began to increased
dramatically as humanitarian aid
activities around the world grew,
• globalization of the pharmaceutical
industry greatly increased traffic
of semi finished and finished pro-
ducts;
• as the necessity for temperature-
controlled air transportation
grew, so did the complexity of the
packaging material develop. Just
putting a box on a plane, along
with other general cargo would no
longer do.
Packaging progress
It all began with simple cardboard
boxes and dry ice for the transporta-
tion of deep frozen products. As re-
quirements for transportation grew to
include other temperature ranges, in-
sulation and “gelpacks” were added
to the packaging. In more advanced
packaging examples, simple battery
operated fans were added to circula-
te the air. More sophisticated chemi-
cals were used to fill the gelpacks in
order to achieve defined temperature
ranges. As none of these packaging
systems had any form of feedback
loop to actively control the tempera-
ture – the term “Passive Packaging”
quickly established itself. Around
the mid 90’s the first containers ap-
peared on the market that had integ-
rated electronic feedback loops that
could actively control the tempera-
ture, using dry ice as cooling agents.
These then developed further to in-

clude heating capabilities and finally
compressors.
Passive and active packaging
As in other industries, new develop-
ments were always an improvement
of the last step. But contrary to other
products, where the use of previous
models eventually fizzles out and the
product vanishes from the market,
all variants of temperature controlled
packaging continue to exist and find
wide usage. It is easy to see that an
air carrier cannot possibly know all
the operational details of all passi-
ve and active packaging solutions
available. And an airline must make
choices as to how many different ty-
pes of containers they can handle
before the added complexity makes
handling errors more likely. While
passive packaging can be more af-
fordable depending on the business
case, temperature variations can and
do occur. Passive packaging is subject
to ambient temperatures just as acti-
ve containers are. But unlike the acti-
ve containers, they have no technical

components that control the tem-
perature through a signal feedback
loop. While insulation and gel-packs
help mitigate the risk of tempera-
ture deviations, they don’t eliminate
them. And though the cargo holds of
an aircraft are pressurized and hea-
ted, temperature control in the sen-
se that the pharmaceutical industry
is used to, does not exist. Since the
air carrier has no knowledge of how
sensitive the contents really are, it is
usually left up to the shipper to deter-
mine which packaging type would be
appropriate for the sensitivity of the
contents and the intended transpor-
tation profile.
Beyond control
Air carriers will provide procedures
that support temperature sensitive
passive shipments on the ground,
but they have little control over the
duration of ambient temperature ex-
posures. Shipments must be taken
from the aircraft and moved to ware
houses. On busy hubs, that can take
quite a while and tarmac exposure
can be extreme. Warehouses them-
selves are designed for transit, not
for long-term storage. They are desi-
gned for a high through put, so doors
open and close all the time. Hot or
cold shipment come in off the tarmac
and are put into a temperature cont-
rolled environment where they either
absorb or release energy, depending
on the length of time that they have
been exposed to outside temperatu-
res. That makes precise temperature
control of an air cargo warehouse a
challenging task. Things like weather,
even geophysical incidents (volcanic
eruptions, earth quakes), but also in-
terruptions by labor disputes, traffic
congestion and technical deficiencies
at airports, or with the aircraft itself,
can make deviations from standard
procedures necessary and can have
an impact on the stability of the tem-
perature range of a given packaging
solution. It is precisely for these re-
asons that many countries have mu-
tually agreed to limit the liability of
a carrier. But it is not that airlines
do not have more reliable solutions

available. As far as active temperature control

is concerned, the solutions are quite sophis-
ticated and rarely fail expectations. Obviously
the high-end compressor technologies have a
greater reliability but they also require higher
investments and must therefore achieve high-
er rates in the market.
Prospective plans
The future of precise temperature controlled
transportation most probably lies with further
innovations in active temperature controlled
packaging solutions. Passive packaging so-
lutions have probably reached the pinnacle
of their development. Ground breaking, revo-
lutionary ideas seem to develop more likely
in the area of active temperature controlled
containers. Here the number of sensors will be
increased in the near future to record other po-
tential threats to the molecular integrity of the
pharmaceuticals. Things like shock, vibration,
x-rays, altitude radiation and so forth, may
have an impact and might have to be measu-
red and recorded. The availability of GPS/GSM
technology will make real time data logging

All Wool and a Yard Wide

A packaging design expert took up a challenge to produce sustainable packaging
using sheep’s wool. A few years later, Woolcool, an eco-friendly wool-based packaging
company was launched.

F
or decades, conventional material
such as polystyrene and polyethy-
lene have sold themselves as the
only option for insulated packaging.
However, there has been a lot of criti-
cism by scientists and environmental
organizations as to the risks that they
pose to human and ecosystem health.
With an increasing pressure on indus-
tries, businesses and governments to
“go green”, the spotlight is now on na-
tural materials.
Setting trends
A new concept created by Angela
Morris, an experienced packaging de-
signer, is challenging companies to
reconsider their choice of packaging.
The idea began in 2002, as part of a
research project to develop insula-
ted packaging using sheep’s wool.
Impressed by the findings of her re-
search, which proved that wool offered
the high performance, natural, eco-
friendly and sustainable alternative to
man-made polymers, Morris later laun-
ched a new company, Woolcool Food
Packaging, in 2008.
The insulated packaging has been independently proven to keep pharmaceuti-
cals within the critical 2 degrees and 8 degrees Celsius from 24 hours to more
than 72 hours.
Why wool
Wool is one of nature’s most amazing
“smart fibers”, with a complete struc-
ture and natural properties that cope
with extremes of cold and heat. Wool
fibres are hygroscopic, meaning they
absorb and release moisture, a natural
thermostat that maintains stable tem-
peratures. “The first thing I identified
about wool, apart from its sustainabi-
lity, was that it was superior in its per-
formance, compared to materials such
as polyethylene and polystyrene,” says
Angela Morris. “With the same product
and the same ambient temperature pro-
file, I found wool kept the product under
5 degrees Celsius for longer.” During
the design stage, Morris also revealed
another benefit to using wool. This is its
ability to be fully flat packed, allowing
for more boxes per pallet than conventi-
onal polystyrene. “Wool was nearly five
times more favorable in terms of decre-
asing logistical and storage costs.”

washed and scoured in accordance

of the washing and scouring pro-
cess include a nitrate and mineral
rich sludge which is used as natural
fertilizer or made into biodegradab-
le slug pellets. The washed fleece is
garnered, needle-felted and cut into
strips which are hygienically sealed
within recyclable PE film with micro-
perforations to allow the hygroscopic
function.
The products have passed various ri-
gorous testing to industry standards,
proving that the insulated packaging
maintains pharmaceuticals at their
required temperature for longer than
conventional materials. The insulated

temperature between 2–8 degrees Cel-
sius for 72 hours, thus reducing the
products space to only 15 liters. Our
PharmaPack box giving 15 liters of pro-
duct space, is half the size and uses
less than half the weight of icepacks
needed”. Morris concludes, “I hope
by 2020 we will have developed a na-
tural alternative to conventional phase
change materials that uses substanti-
ally less energy.” 

Compressor specialist Bitzer has developed a new condensing unit for high ambient temperatures
and greater cooling capacity. Now available, the LH265E is energy-efficient, extremely robust and
ideal for the low temperature application in countries with a hot climate.

ling chains are extremely important.
But the low temperature application,
such as food refrigeration, poses a
major challenge in such areas. For this
reason, Bitzer has expanded its well-
known series of air-cooled condensing
units to include another construction
size: the LH265E. In addition to Asia
and the Middle East, the device will
also be launched onto the market in
Europe. The LH265E air-cooled con-
densing unit is suitable for greater
cooling capacity in the low tempera-
ture application. It has a cooling ca-
pacity of more than 40 kilowatts, and
is compatible with single and double
stage semi-hermetic reciprocating
compressors. Ideal for high ambient
temperatures
Powerful and robust
“The LH265E was designed specifi-
cally for the low temperature applica-
tion in demanding conditions,” says
Dieter Hildebrandt, Bitzer Manager
World Condensing Unit. “This has
allowed us to meet the demand for
reliable condensing units in extreme-
ly warm countries as well as exploit
growth opportunities in these regi-
ons.” Depending on the refrigerant
used, the condensing unit can achieve
a capacity of more than 40 kW in the
low temperature application. “Even
in extremely high outside temperatu-
res, the condenser guarantees reliab-
le operations and maintains the cold
store temperature,” says Hildebrandt.
A robust weather protective housing
also makes the device very corrosion-
resistant. If required, the condenser
can also be equipped with fins coated
in plastic.

The robust, compact LH265E is flexible
in its composition: it can be equipped
with all single stage four-cylinder com-
pressors and the single and double
stage six-cylinder reciprocating com-
pressors in the Bitzer Ecoline series.
The single stage Ecoline reciprocating
compressors boast high efficiency and
can be equipped with cutting-edge ca-
pacity control. The double stage six-cy-
linder compressors can also be equip-
ped with liquid sub coolers, increasing
cooling capacity and efficiency. The
LH265E is compatible with all refrige-
rants that are authorized for Ecoline
reciprocating compressors, including
R134a, R404A, R407A and R407F.

equip the LH265E with an accessories
package comprising a pressure limiter,
oil separator with check valve, and a
liquid line with filter drier, sight glass
and solenoid valve. The condensing
unit can also simply be retrofitted with
the corresponding accessories, just
like the compressor.
Efficient and eco-friendly
With its impressive capacity, the
LH265E is the top product in the new
LHE series, which Bitzer launched at
the end of last year. The condensing
units fulfill the efficiency requirements
of the current European Union Eco de-
sign Directive and offer much better
air cooling than their predecessors.

Proper detection

The new facility is aimed at all pro-
ducers and end-users of fresh fruit
which is destined for additional pro-
cessing. Liquid Concept therefore
expects good demand for fruit trans-
port by tank trailer, particularly from
the fruit processing segment of the
food industry, such as manufactur-
ers of preserves and juices. Liquid
Concept’s new logistics solution gu-
arantees fast and reliable transport
of fresh fruit and punctual delivery to
recipients.
Initially 40 tank trailers with a capa-
city of up to 35 000 liters each will
be deployed on European routes. To
ensure that the perishable cargo is
protected against adverse tempera-
ture effects, the insulated tanks are
temperature controlled. Transport
by tank trailer is especially suitable
for fruits like black and red currants,
cherries, strawberries, apricots, and
raspberries.

mely low temperatures and the risk
of contaminating the goods are being
stretched to their limits.

Real Time Tracking
Since late May 2015 the logistics service
provider Rhenus eonova and its custo-
mers are able to see the status of their
consignments in real time, thanks to the
smartphone app Mobile Track from Euro-
Log. The app gives them direct and in-
dependent access to track whether their
consignments have been loaded, are in
transit or have already arrived at their
destination. “The app complements our
existing ERP systems and information
tools. It allows our customers to check
the status of their goods in real time.
With the app Mobile Track from Euro-Log
we have found a solution that allows us
to track consignments right through to
the ‘last mile’”, reports Vera Krüger, Busi-
ness Unit Manager at Rhenus eonova.
Thanks to Mobile Track, both Rhenus
eonova and their customers know the
exact current status of their deliveries in
real time. To guarantee this, since late
May each loading list carries a barcode,
which the drivers have to scan. All the
drivers need for this is a smartphone
with the app installed. After they have
scanned the barcode, the drivers must
scan all the loading crates on the load
list. This generates the status “loaded”,
which is then transmitted in real time to

Fraport Cargo Services (FCS) as part of
a strategic partnership with Fraport AG.
The investment is part of WFS’ strategy

49 percent share in FCS and will con-

Streams Stressed by
Pharmaceutical Pollution
P
harmaceuticals commonly found
in the environment are disrupting
streams, with unknown impacts on
aquatic life and water quality. Dr. Emma
Rosi-Marshall, a scientist at the Cary Ins-
titute of Ecosystem Studies, comments:
“Pharmaceutical pollution is now de-
tected in waters throughout the world.
Causes include aging infrastructure, se-
wage overflows, and agricultural runoff.
Our streams and rivers are exposed to
a cocktail of synthetic compounds, from
stimulants and antibiotics to analgesics
and antihistamines.”
More than meets the eye
Together with her colleagues, Rosi-
Marshall looked at how six common
pharmaceuticals influenced similar-
sized streams in New York, Maryland,
and Indiana. Caffeine, the antibiotic
ciprofloxacin, the anti diabetic metfor-
min, two antihistamines used to treat
heartburn (cimetidine and ranitidine),
and one antihistamine used to treat al-
lergies (diphenhydramine) were inves-
tigated, both alone and in combina-
tions, using pharmaceutical-diffusing
substrates.
They focused on the response of bio-
films, because they’re vital to stream
health. Biofilms are complex commu-
nities composed of algae, fungi, and
bacteria all living and working together.
In streams, biofilms contribute to wa-
ter quality by recycling nutrients and
organic matter, and are also a major
food source for invertebrates that, in
turn, feed larger animals like fish. The
most striking result of the study was
diphenhydramine’s effects on algal
production and microbial respiration.
Exposure caused biofilms to experience
up to a 99 percent decrease in photo-
synthesis, as well as significant drops
in respiration. Diphenhydramine also
caused a change in the bacterial spe-
cies present in the biofilms, including
an increase in a bacterial group known
to degrade toxic compounds and a re-
duction in a group that digests com-
pounds produced by plants and algae.
Disturbing nature
Results suggest that this antihistami-
ne is disrupting the ecology of these
sensitive biofilm communities. Rosi-
Marshall notes, “We know that diphen-
hydramine is commonly found in the
environment. And its effect on biofilms
could have repercussions for animals
in stream food webs, like insects and
fish. We need additional studies loo-
king at the concentrations that cause
ecosystem disruption, and how they
react with other stressors, such as ex-
cess nutrients.”
Society’s dependence on pharmaceu-
ticals is not likely to wane. Nor is its
need for clean, fresh water. This stu-
dy adds another piece of evidence to
the case calling for innovations in the
way we manage waste water. Currently,
only a fraction of the world’s waste wa-
ter is treated, and the infrastructure in
many developed nations is aging.
