REVIEW OF LITERATURE, CONCEPT, AND THEORITICAL

FRAMEWORK

2.1 Literature Review

Language is developing. In line with the development, slang also

develops. The exact origin of slang is not known, it is probably as old as

language. Slang is considered as a unique language, it is unique because its

existence is an interesting aspect in every language system; especially in

English language system. The definition of slang is a wide concept. On this

literature review, there are four studies that will be reviewed below.

The similar thesis discussing slang is written by Ari Hanggoro(2011)

entitled An Analysis of Slang Terms in the “American Gangster” Movie.

This thesis aims the meaning, kinds, and the reason of using slang in

american gangster movie directed by Ridley Scott. This research uses

qualitative method, He uses the movie script as the unit of analysis. The

writer uses Eric Patridge theory, but he only focuses on slang that terms that

have a high frequency.

Another reference is written by Nur Ardyasari(2009) entitled

Analysis of Slang Expressions Translation “Mean Girls” Movie. This

research was conducted to describe the translation strategy and the impacts

of the strategy to the accuracy and acceptability of slang expression

translation in “Mean Girls” movie. This research employed the descriptive

qualitative method. The data source of the research was “Mean Girls” movie,

5
both the dialogue in the source language and its translation. This research

used theory by Bell Roger (1991)

This thesis is written byLestari Aprilia(2016). Entitled A study of

slang word in song lyrics used by Bruno Mars song. The study concerned

with discussing about slang word used in Bruno Mars lyrics of song. The

research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. In this study, the

theory of word-formation process by George Yule process(1986) in his

book ”the study of language ” is used to analyze the formation process of

each slang word. In detail, this study statement to answer two research

problem: what is the type of slang word used by Bruno Mars in lyrics and

what is the dominant slang word found in Bruno Mars lyrics of song. The

data were thought document analysis, the research tried to find and identity

the slang word in lyrics by marking, finding and analyzing the slang word

The last thesis is written by Andrianto Aris (2015) entitled Study of

Slang Word in “Ride Along” Movie. this research used descriptive and

qualitative method. This study categorized the type of slang using Patridge’s

theory, Yanchun’s theory about the function of slang and Golden’s theory

about the effect of slang.

All of these theses had one big problem that could not be separated.

The problem is the slang itself that will change it form or meaning because

of the people or the time.

6
2.2 Concept of Slang
According to Pei and Gaynor (1954), slang is a style of language in

faintly common use, produced by popular adaption and extension of the

meaning of existing words and by coining new words with disregard for

scholastic standard and linguistic principles of the formation of words;

generally peculiar to certain classes and social or age groups.

Spolsky (1998 : 35) states slang as special kinds of intimate or in

group speech and associated with peer group and gang of speech to obtain

some degree of privacy and to show the solidarity among the members.

Chapman (1988) in his book “The Dictionary os American Slang”,

explains that slang is a style or register of language consisting of terms of

the same conceptual meaning but having stronger emotive impact than the

standard terms, in order to express an attitude of self-assertion towards

conventional order or moral authority and often an affinity with or

membership in occupational, ethic or other social groups and ranging in

acceptability from sexual or scatological crudity to nudacious witness.

2.3 Theoritical Framework

The analysis of slang word types used the theory from Chapman

(1988) which divided into two different types : primary and secondary.

While, identyfying the function of slang words, the theory proposed by

Allan and Burridge (2006). There are seven different funcition : to addres, to

show intimacy, to reveal anger, to form intimate atmosphere, to initiate relax

conversation, to express impression and humiliate.

7
2.3.1 The Types of Slang

According to Chapman (1988), there are two types slang, there are:

1. Primarily Slang

Primarily Slang is the pristine speech of subculture members, so

very natural to its speaker that it seems they might be mute without it. Of

course they would not be, since we know that slang is by definition always

and alternative idiom, to be chosen rather tha required. Much of teenage talk,

and the speech of urban street gangs, would be example of primary slang

Primary slang can be detected by contrast, their oral language is

often rich, complex, and powerful, and they live by using it effectively.

Chapman(1988) calls the specialized social vocabulary of subcultures

primary slang.

The primary slang of groups is often appropriated into general slang.

It strikes members of the mainstream as novel, rich, and imaginative. It

suggest a way of life with greater fun and excitement than the well-regulated

live of most. Adopting the vocabulary is a way of sharing vicariously in the

daring while remaining apart from what is unsafe or objectionable about the

way of life in the subculture.

Slang is primaly speech claiming group membership, slang often

associated with peer group and gang speech, intentionally used to obtain

some degree of secrecy, it may become a secret language, slang regularly

8
transgress other social norms, making free use of taboo expressions

(spolsky:35)

2. Secondary Slang

Secondary Slang is chosen not so much to fix one group as to

express one’s attitude and resourcefulness by pretending momentarily, in a

little stick of guerilla theatre, to be the member of street gang or criminal or

gambler or a drug user or a professional football player, and hence to

express someone’s contempt, superiority, cleverness by borrowing someone

else verbal dress. It is also a matter of stylic choice rather than true

identification.

Eventually, the user of slang is not limited only for underworld

people but spreading out through certain groups of people in society. Most

of slang is methaporic, in determining the meaning of slang given cannot be

directly found through its literary meaning, for example “what the hell?” it

is quite far from our imaginary of a place for punishment by god but here

the aim of saying that expression is to show the surprising which mean

“what is this?.”

9
2.3.2 The Function of Slang

According Allan and Burridge (2006) meaning is distinguihed into

seven different functions, there are : to address, to show intimacy, to reveal

anger, to form intimae atmosphere, to initiate relax conversation, to express

impression and to humiliate. The more detail description is;

1. To address

Speaker use slang word to address another speaker in order to maintain

their close relationship. Someone who has close relationship usually tends to

use informal kind of address because using formal address indicating the

speaker has distant relationship or has specific purpose with other speaker.

2. To form intimate atmosphere

One of slang function in this type is to form intimate atmosphere. Slang

can be one alternative way to alleviate the relationship between the strangers

will flow smoothly so that they can reduce social distance and more

comfortable.

3. To initiate relax conversation

Another function is to initiate relax conversation. Sometimes the

speakers prefer to use slang word rather than standard variant of vocabulary

to create relax conversation. They have tendency to use slang word to

initiate relax conversation in purpose of having smooth conversation in

formal situation. Someone who has close relationship with other tends to use

10
certain vocabulary in order to make the conversation runs more relax so that

they can feel more confortable.

4. To express impression

When the speakers feel that they are impressed about someone they

meet or something they see, they often use slang word to express their

impressions. The example is awesome and cool. The slang word “awesome”

is taken to represent another data since use of slang words “cool” actually

similar. The slang word cool means great, also has function to show

impression.

5. To reveal anger

Another function is to reveal anger. There is the tendency to express

unpleasant or dislike feeling of the speaker towards something. The anger

feeling is major reason of the use of kind of slang words.

6. To humiliate

The speaker have tendency to express unpleasant or dislike feling of

the speaker towards someone or something by mocking them.

7. To show intimacy

Sometimes the speaker prefers to use slang variant rarther than

standard variant of vocabulary. They have tendency to use slang word in

purpose of showing their close relationship. As we know, when someone

has close relationship with the other, they will use certain choice of words

11
compared with when someone speaks with the other who had distant

relationship.
