By using the Skeist1 method it is possible to calculate, at

any conversion of monomer to polymer, the composition of

the copolymer chains being formed, as well as the composition

of the unreacted monomer.

The calculated curves for the copolymerization of styrene

and butadiene (case 1 above) are shown in Figure 3.6. If a

mixture containing 66 per cent styrene (by weight) is copoly-

merized the copolymer initially formed has less than 66 per

cent styrene. However as the conversion increases, the amount

of styrene in the copolymer chains being formed increases;
