as the conversion approaches 100 per cent the chains being
formed contain nearly 100 per cent styrene. If an 89:11 mix-
ture is used the initial copolymer contains less than 89 per cent
styrene; again as 100 per cent conversion is approached the
chains being formed contain nearly 100 per cent styrene.
Other mixtures (e.g. 51:49 and 25:75) give a similar result.
Thus a family of curves is obtained in which the first copoly-
mer chains formed always contain less styrene than the initial
monomer mixture, while the last polymer chains formed con-
tain essentially all styrene.
The copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile gives a
different family of curves. A mixture containing a 76:24 ratio
