i Appliances-

/ Refrigerators and Freezers. Based on an average of manu-

facturers' estimates more than 3Vi million refrigerators were

sold in this country in 1959. Add to this figure the estimated

number of freezers (1,100,000) which appliance dealers

marketed in 1959 and it becomes apparent that the sale of

appliances is of paramount interest to the plastics industry,

, especially since an estimated 100 million pounds of poly-

styrene are used in refrigerator and freezer applications. Both

regular and impact types of polystyrene meet many of the

requirements for construction materials of the refrigeration

and freezer industry. These requirements are:

(1) Good strength and toughness characteristics at sub-

freezing temperatures.

(2) High fatigue strength to withstand repetitive shock

such as door slamming.

(3) Outstanding stress relaxation properties to withstand

high assembly stresses without cracking.

(4) Stable colors in a wide variety of shades.

(5) Pleasing surface gloss.

(6) Excellent chemical resistance to foods.

(7) Economical fabrication by injection molding, extrusion

and sheet forming methods.

(8) Lasting resistance to stains.

(9) Good aging qualities.
