INTRODUCTION
According to the world health organization low vision is a person has visual
impairment even after treatment or refractive correction is given. Low vision also has a
visual acuity of less than 20/60 to light perception or the visual field was less than 10 degrees
The common visual problem that low vision patient is experiencing are contrast,
glare, lights, overall blurring, central scotoma, hemianopsia, contricted visual field,
blindness. The condition associated with low vision that affect older children or working
population are, best’s disease, bull’s eye dystrophy, retinitis pigmentosa, and stargardt’s
disease.
can manifest roughly around 8 to 20 years of aged. stargardts is inherited that passed to their
children when both parents carry a mutation of a gene called ABCA4. There are two types of
photoreceptors the rods and cones, there are also responsible for detecting the light and
convert it into electrical signals going to the brain. Both rod and cones die away in this
condition but some research said that cones are more affected in most cases.
In the Philippine stargardts disease is very rare and because of that there are no
researches about it in Philippines setting. This research aims to determine the population
that this condition has within metro manila, in what age they are diagnose in this condition,
family background.
