INTRODUCTION

According to the world health organization low vision is a person has visual

impairment even after treatment or refractive correction is given. Low vision also has a

visual acuity of less than 20/60 to light perception or the visual field was less than 10 degrees

from the point of fixation.

The common visual problem that low vision patient is experiencing are contrast,

glare, lights, overall blurring, central scotoma, hemianopsia, contricted visual field,

blindness. The condition associated with low vision that affect older children or working

population are, best’s disease, bull’s eye dystrophy, retinitis pigmentosa, and stargardt’s

disease.

Stargard’s disease is a common form of inherited juvenile macular degeneration. It

can manifest roughly around 8 to 20 years of aged. stargardts is inherited that passed to their

children when both parents carry a mutation of a gene called ABCA4. There are two types of

photoreceptors the rods and cones, there are also responsible for detecting the light and
convert it into electrical signals going to the brain. Both rod and cones die away in this

condition but some research said that cones are more affected in most cases.

In the Philippine stargardts disease is very rare and because of that there are no

researches about it in Philippines setting. This research aims to determine the population

that this condition has within metro manila, in what age they are diagnose in this condition,

family background.
