FAMILIES AT FIRST PRES

First Pres has three rooms to help young families on
Sunday mornings: one nursing room for mothers &
infants, next to the Prayer Room, between the Sanctuary
and Lee Fellowship Hall, and a second nursing room for
mothers & infants, on the 1st floor of Clayton Life Center
next to the elevators.

In addition, we have a Family Room for infants, children

and dads :-) , also on the first floor of Clayton Life Center.​
All three rooms have a live television feed from the
worship services.

Our Genesis services utilize an environmental lighting effect
called haze, a theatrical humidifier to thicken the air to enhance
lighting. Both Lee Fellowship Hall and Sanctuary hazers are
water-based and safe.

The Ten Commandments

I You shall have no other gods before me.
II You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of
anything.
III You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God.
IV Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
V Honor your father and your mother.
VI You shall not murder.
VII You shall not commit adultery.
VIII You shall not steal.
IX You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
X You shall not covet.
Traditional Worship
Our closing hymn today echoes the theme of the
morning. The opening stanza hints at Jacob’s
encounter at Bethel, the place where he wrestled
with God. It was a place of reverence and awe, a
holy place. “The Lord was in this place and I was
not aware of it.” Such was Moses’ experience on the
mountain. The second verse picks up the worship
of heaven where the angelic host sing “Holy, holy,
holy” as saints and angels voices blend. In the latter
part of the verse the Church on earth (we) join in
with the heavenly hosts in praising God. This last
sentence is not simply a statement, it is actual as we
sing the concluding hymn. We on earth are joining
voices in heaven as together we worship our great
God. Earthly time and heavenly timelessness are
combined in our song. The final strophe suggests
an incarnational aspect of worship whereby the
worshiper is filled with the Holy Spirit in like
manner to those heavenly beings who ceaselessly
adore the Father. The first two phrases of the tune
are exactly alike. The final phrase also repeats
itself. It is a hymn stressing reverence and awe in
worshiping our holy God. While this hymn may be
unfamiliar to some, it is a beautiful expression of a
heart in awe-filled worship. -Dr. Dan Sharp

THIS WEEK'S DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. What were some of the "laws" or rules you had in
your households as you were growing up? Why do
you think your parents/grandparents had the rules in
place?
2. God is precise and clear in His giving of the Ten
Commandments. The first four of the ten are focused
on keeping the relationship with God intact. As you
think about these four (no worship of other gods, no
idolatry, no abuse of God's holy name, and abuse of
God's holy Sabbath), which one is heeded more than
the others? Which one is neglected? Why do you
think this is?
3. The first commandment forbids the worshiping of
other gods, while the second forbids the worshiping
of idols. What might that "worship" look like in this
day and age? Why do you think this is important to
God?
4. The fifth through tenth commandments are focused
on keeping our relationships with others intact.
As you think about these six (honoring parents,
honoring marriage, honoring the lives of others,
honoring the possessions of others, honoring the
truth, and honoring what God gives others and us to
live with), which one is heeded more than the others?
Which one is neglected? Why do you think that is?
5. The fifth and seventh commandments focus
specifically on the family unit (honoring parents and
marriage). Do you think this is significant? Why is it
important to keep our familial relationships intact?
6. In Matthew 22:36-40, scholars suggest that Jesus
reveals the heart of the Ten Commandments - to love
God and love neighbors. These two commandments
are intimately connected to one another. Why can't
you separate the commands to love God and love
your neighbors?
7. What are ways you can be more loving toward your
neighbors?
