A CHILD’S HAJJ p.286

Maturity of age is not a condition for Hajj!

“Hadhrat Abdullah b. Abbas‫ رضـ‬reports that the Messenger of Allāh met some traveller at Rauha and he
asked them who they were. They told him that they were Muslims and, in turn, asked him who he was
“Allāh’s Messenger,” he replied. Immediately, a woman lifted her son up to him, asking whether he
could perform Hajj “Certainly, he can “the Messenger‫ صـ‬of Allāh told her and you too will receive the
reward of it.” [Muslim]

A child may perform Hajj; parents will earn reward for dressing him in Ihram and observing all other
requirements.

However, the child must then perform the obligatory Hajj when he/she reaches adult age.

VICARIOUS (BADAL) HAJJ p.287

“Hadhrat Abdullah b. Abbas‫ رضـ‬narrates that during the Farewell pilgrimage a woman of the Khas’am clan
asked the Messenger‫ رضـ‬of Allāh id she could perform Hajj on her father’s behalf as the season had come
at a time when her father was too old to sit firmly on his mount. He replied that she could do so.”
[Bukhari & Muslim]

Either male or female may perform Hajj on behalf of each other; it does not have to be that female
performs Hajj for another female and vice versa.

Anyone who cannot go to Hajj for reasons of ill health or old age may send someone on their behalf,
but should the person recover Hajj becomes wājib on them and they must perform Hajj.

UMRAH DURING RAMADHAN p.288

“Hadhrat Abu Bakr b. Abdullah Rehman‫ رضـ‬tells us that a companion lady, - Sahabiyyah – told the
Messenger‫ صـ‬of Allāh that she had made preparations for going to Hajj but for certain reasons could not
do so. He said, ‘Perform Umrah during Ramzan, for, that will be like Hajj.” [Imām Mālik]

SPECIALLY FOR WOMEN p.289

Hadhrat Jābir b. Abdullah‫ رضـ‬narrates: “The Messenger of Allāh‫ صـ‬remained nine years in Madina (after his
migration), and in the tenth year announced that he would proceed on the pilgrimage that year. Hearing
this, numerous Muslims gathered in Madina so that they might accompany him. After we started out
and reached Zal-Hulaifa (‫)ذوالحليفة‬, Asma b. Omais gave birth to a boy, (Later named Muhammad b.
Abu Bakr). She sent word to the Messenger‫ صـ‬of Allāh, inquiring what she should do. He directed her to
have a bath, wrap some cloth as an underwear and don the Ihram.” [Muslim]

The Messenger of Allāh‫ صـ‬appointed 5 places known as ‘Meeqat’ (‫ )ميقات‬where the Ihram should be
donned from.

Ihram is valid during the state of menstruation or Nifas.

Bath is not compulsory in order to don the Ihram but is desirable and a Sunnah.

Only Circumbulation and Prayers are forbidden for a menstruating woman. Rituals such as al-Arafat,
Muzdalifa and Mina may be performed.

No penalty or sacrifice is necessary for a woman who cannot circumbulate whilst menstruating.
However, she must wait until cleansed and then complete her circumbulation.

She cannot completely abandon her Tawaf due to menstruation. Her Hajj will be invalid until she returns
to perform her Tawaf. If she returns home without performing her Tawaf she must go back to Makkah
in order to complete her Tawaf, this may be done at any time, does not have to be during Hajj season.

The most respected wife of the Messenger of Allāh‫صـ‬, Hadhrat A’isha‫ رضـ‬narrates that after the ceremonies of

said, ‘Perhaps, we shall have to stay back because of her. ’Then he asked if she had made the Ka’ba rounds on
