Time- 3 Hours Full Marks- 70

(Answer SIX questions taking any THREE from each half)
(2 marks are allotted in each half for overall impression)
(Use Separate Answer Script for each half)

FIRST HALF

1. (a) State and explain the conditions of equilibrium of three forces. 4

(b) Referring to Fig.-Q1(b) , A ball of weight Q=12 kN rests in a right 7
angled trough. Determine the forces exerted on the sides of the trough
at D and E if all surfaces are perfectly smooth.

2. (a) What is angle of friction? Find the relation between angle of friction 4
and coefficient of friction?
(b) A block of weight W1 = 200 kN rests on a horizontal surface and 7
supports on top of it another block of weight W2=50 kN. The block
W2 is attached to a vertical wall by the inclined massless string AB.
Find the magnitude of the horizontal force P applied to the lower
block as shown in Fig.-Q2(b), that will be necessary to cause slipping
to impend. The coefficient of static friction for all contiguous surfaces
is m = 0.3.

shown in Fig.-Q3. when centroid of the circular hole is (3",3").
(b) Calculate the area moment of inertia of the shaded area about x-axis as 5
shown in Fig.-Q3.
