Challenge Case benefits

A deep, onshore gas well had a history of high gas pressure — Sensitivity and accuracy of

Investigation had started with an annular pressure survey fast, reliable diagnosis
and the data collected indicated an estimated leak rate of — Non-productive well downtime
3.5 l/min. was reduced
— Appropriate remediation targeted confidently
This is a particularly low leak rate to detect, made even restoring productivity

The leak point is clearly identified on the log.

The symmetrical nature of the log response is an indication
of a leak behind the tubing.
Case study: LeakPoint
Solution Typical applications
A LeakPoint ultrasound survey was performed to locate — Locating leaks in tubing, casing and
completion components
the source of the leak. The detection tool was deployed — Pre-workover diagnostics
on an electric wireline in surface readout mode, to allow — Post remediation validation
continuous logging. Tubing pressure was maintained at — Pre-abandonment survey
3,800 psi and, before commencing, the A annulus was bled
to 0 psi.

As annular pressure was allowed to build up gradually, the

logging was initiated at 30 ft/min. It was crucial to ensure
that sufficient delta-pressure was maintained in the annulus
for the leak to remain active throughout the survey.

At 7,830 ft a clear leak signature appeared on the log. The

leak point correlated exactly with a stage cementing “DV”
tool in the 7-inch casing. The well history showed the DV
packer had previously failed a pressure test and further
annuli tests confirmed that the leak was not in the tubing.

Results
LeakPoint ultrasound accurately identified a small,
intermittent leak at the DV tool. The LeakPoint analyst
concluded that gas was intermittently leaking through the
DV tool by channelling through poor cement below the DV.

The well was scheduled for a workover. A cement evaluation

log confirmed poor cement below the DV tool, a secondary
cement job was performed through the tool, and a new
completion was deployed. This resolved the annulus
pressure problem.
