 I worked with the Florida Department of Health and the University of Florida’s Emerging
Pathogens Institute to examine newly implemented molecular diagnostics, including Real Time
PCR and the Hains Test, to improve the diagnosis of active tuberculosis in the State of Florida.
The study looked for improvements in the sensitivity, specificity, and resultant earlier initiation of
appropriate therapy with these molecular techniques. The results of the new molecular techniques
were compared to smear, culture, and conventional susceptibility testing. These new techniques
can cause the initialization of therapy in a timelier manner, leading to a reduction in morbidity
and mortality. We are in the process of finishing the research and will soon be published.
