Inspection of Testing Laboratory

Laboratory Exercise No. 1

Date performed : 11/13/17

Date submitted : 11/20/17

I. Objective
This laboratory exercise aims the students to:
- Be acquainted with the material testing laboratory and the location of the general
laboratory equipment.
- Know what materials to use on the succeeding experiments in the next laboratory
experiments
- Know the safety precautions in handling certain apparatuses in the succeeding
experiments.

II. Procedure
1. With a staffmember or a professor, go to the laboratory and observe the place and the
equipments inside
2. You may see and observe each and every material or equipment inside the laboratory
with the professor’s or the staff members’ assistance
3. List out the equipments and the materials
4. Obtain the laboratory’s MAP by knowing where each equipment is placed.
III. Sketch
IV. Equipment and machines inside the laboratory with their corresponding functions :
1. Compression testing machine - compression testing is typically used to test materials
such as plastics, elastomers, rubber ,composites , foam, rock and asphalt. it is rarely
used for steel. And is also used for checking finished products.
2. Horizontal flow oven – air is supplied into the work chamber through a fully adjustable
boxed duct located on the side and along the length of the work chamber and then after
heated air passes through the product and the work chamber, and is collected in the
duct located on the opposite wall. Then air is returned to the heat and recirculation
plenum where it is reheated and reintroduced into the chamber. This type of airflow is
only limited to horizontal flow and better without and vertical air flow.
3. Oven- is a thermally insulated chamber used for heating, baking, or drying of a
substance.
4. Concrete mixer – commonly called a cement mixer; is a device that homogeneously
combines cement aggregate such as sand and gravel and water to produce concrete. A
typical concrete mixer uses a revolving drum to mix the components. For smaller
volume works portable concrete mixers are often used so that the concrete can be
made at a site, giving workers ample time to use concrete before it hardens.
5. Sieve – a container with wore mesh to separate sediment grains of different sizes,
different sieves have different sized holes in the mesh. And these sieves can be stacked
to sort the sediment analysis.
6. Sieve shaker- is a machine designed to hold and agitate a stack of sieves for the purpose
of separating materials into different sieves to know its size.
7. Universal testing machine(UTM) – used to test tensile stress and compressive stress of
materials. It is named after the fact that it can perform many standard tensile and
compression tests on materials, components, and structures,
8. Cylindrical mold – designed to make or mold concrete.
9. Vicat apparatus - designed to test water content in cement.
10. Digital scale – designed to weigh samples.
11. Shovel – used to dig, lift and move materials such as soil; sand and gravel.
12. Mechanical splitter –to reduce the gross sample of an aggregate.
13. Tension testing machine –is designed to know the peak tensile stress until the product
fails

VI. Remarks

the laboratory had a lot more materials but we chose the significant equipments present in
the laboratory.

VII. Conclusion

The laboratory had full of equipments and we need to properly know them before we use
them.
