I am writing to apply for the summer internship position for software engineering that was listed
through the Career Professional Development Center Office at Carnegie Mellon University. I
believe my background skills and research experience make me an ideal candidate.
I have had a great deal of research experience in coding, both in the lab and in the field. I am
currently conducting research at my school to assess the usage of blockchain into financial
transactions by using C++, a well-known programming language.
During my coding career, one important lesson I learned is that, contrary to what it
seems, coding is not a solitary practice. I code to address the problems of a particular
society. So, my coding process starts from engaging thoroughly with the targeted users
of my app. I interview focus groups and try to put myself in their shoes by simulating
their conditions. For example, when I was writing an android app that helped blind
people navigate a city with sound markers, I tested my beta on the street, with my
cellphone in hand and my eyes completely covered. I couldn’t have experienced what
it’s like to be blind better – I kept bumping into other pedestrians and tripping on
curbs. While I was developing a website that collected the feedback of passengers on
their bus drivers, I had to visit the city administration of my hometown several times to
get the data I need and pitch my project. Through all these endeavors, I realized that a
successful programmer must have an understanding of humanity and know how to
work with people from various walks of life. I believe the vision of the Dietrich College
of Humanities and Social Sciences, which investigates the human aspects of diverse
academic disciplines, meshes perfectly with my desire to make our society a more
livable place by applying my knowledge and skills. I am particularly interested in
studying Policy and Management because public policy should be one of the most
effective means for making change.
I believe that I would be an asset to your program. This internship would provide me with the
ideal opportunity to assist your organization and to expand my research skills.
I hope to schedule an interview at your convenient time. Thanks in advance. Thanks again for
your consideration,
Sincerely,
Joonseok Park
