5. At ESSAR in surat, during mild steel structural plant establishment welding is carry out. Draw
the appropriate welding position according to welding actual position at plant.
Example:
1. A plate of 50 mm wide carrying a load of 12000 kg is to be welded by four equal fillets to
another plate as shown in below figure. Find the necessary size of each fillet.
2. A welded lap joint is per below figure connects by 6.4 mm fillet two 75 mm * 10 mm plates
which are in tension. Allowing a stress of 11 kg/mm2 in end fillet and 8.8 kg/mm2 in the diagonal
fillet, it is required to find if the joint is suitable. The working stress in the plates is 12.8 kg/mm2.
3. For the fillet welded structure as shown in below figure, determine the size of the fillet welds.
Permissible value of the shear stress on section through the throat of fillet welds may be taken as
1000 kg/cm2.
4. For the bracket shown in below figure, calculate the throat stress. Each fillet weld is 20 cm (L)
long and 1.5 cm thick (S).
5. For the structure shown in below figure, find the two fillet weld length l1 and l2. Assume
working stress in shear fillet welds as 800 kg/cm2 and size (S) of fillet as 20 mm.
6. A complete butt weld is to be made in plate 60 cm wide subject to an alternating load of 30000
kgs. If the allowable stress is 620 kg/cm2 what thickness of plate is necessary?
7. A circular plate and a rectangular plate have been welded as shown in below figure. Find the
greatest twisting moment that can be resisted by the fillet weld. Assume permissible shear stress
in the weld as 1040 kg/cm2.
