What is Cyber Crime ?

(intro)

Cyber crime, or computer related crime, is crime that involves

a computer and a network. The computer may have been used
in the commission of a crime, or it may be the target.
Cybercrimes can be defined as offences that are committed
against individuals or groups of individuals with a criminal motive
to intentionally harm the reputation of the victim or cause
physical or mental harm, or loss, to the victim directly or
indirectly, using modern telecommunication networks such as
Internet. There are different ways of conducting cyber crime,
such as:-
 Hacking
 Salami attack
 Phishing
 Net extortion
 Cyber stalking
 Cyber Defamation
 Virus Dissemination
 Denial of Service attack
 Credit Card Fraud etc.
Types of Cyber crime:-

Hacking-Hacking is unauthorized intrusion into a computer or a network.

The person engaged in hacking activities is generally referred to as a hacker.
This hacker may alter system or security features to accomplish a goal that
differs from the original purpose of the system. Hackers employ a variety of
techniques for hacking, including:

 Vulnerability scanner: checks computers on networks for known

weaknesses
 Password cracking: the process of recovering passwords from data
stored or transmitted by computer systems
 Trojan horse: serves as a back door in a computer system to allow an
intruder to gain access to the system later
 Viruses: self-replicating programs that spread by inserting copies of the
same program into other executable code files or documents

Salami attack-A “salami attack” is a form of cyber crime usually used for the
purpose of committing financial crimes in which criminals steal money or
resources a bit at a time from financial accounts on a system.

Phishing-Phishing is the attempt to obtain sensitive information such as

usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and, indirectly, money), often
for malicious reasons, by disguising as a trustworthy entity in an electronic
communication.

Extortion (also called shakedown, outwrestling and exaction) is a criminal

offense of obtaining money, property, or services from an individual or
institution, through coercion

Cyber Stalking is the repeated use of electronic communications to harass or

frighten someone, for example by sending threatening emails.

Cyber defamation is not a specific criminal offense, misdemeanor or tort, but

rather defamation or slander conducted via digital media, usually through the
Internet.

In computing, a denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) is a cyber-attack where

the perpetrator seeks to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its
intended users by temporarily or indefinitely disrupting services of a host
connected to the Internet.

Credit card fraud is a wide-ranging term for theft and fraud committed using or
involving a payment card, such as a credit card or debit card, as
a fraudulent source of funds in a transaction. The purpose may be to obtain
goods without paying, or to obtain unauthorized funds from an account.
