First Pres Welcomes New Organist

Welcome Steve Strite and family! The Lord has led both
Steve and us to the same conclusion; the next chapter
in his life and ours are to work together in ministry at
First Pres. Steve comes to us from Bradenton Christian
Reformed Church in Bradenton, where he has served as
Director of Music and Worship since 2004. Previously
he had been for seven years at Cornerstone Evangelical
Presbyterian Church in Brighton, MI as Assistant Director
of Music. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in organ from
Oakland University and a Master’s Degree in organ
from the University of Michigan. Steve is a member
of both the AGO and the ACDA professional music
organizations. Steve has much experience both in
classical music as well as contemporary worship music.
In addition, he is a fine composer with several published
works by major publishers. He was the organist for
the 23rd EPC General Assembly and is a thoroughly
Reformed church musician! Steve will be joined by his
wife, Becky, and their two daughters Allison, a sixth
grader, and Julianne, a fifth grader. We are delighted to
welcome this gifted organist and man of God!

Traditional Worship
We welcome our new organist, Mr. Steve Strite, to
worship this morning. We’ll have an opportunity
to meet his whole family in a few weeks. Today we
turn our attention to the call of Moses, perhaps the
greatest man in the Old Testament. In the worship
service we have chosen music that points to a
personal encounter with God. Our God is relational
with His people. We never worship an idea but a
Spiritual Being. God is spirit and those who worship
Him worship in spirit and in truth. The soloist in
the anthem refers specifically to Moses’ encounter
with God on the mountain…”Upon the mountain
when my Lord spoke, out of His mouth came fire
and smoke…” Our concluding hymn, God Is Here,
reminds of us our communion with God through the
bread and cup as we celebrate the Lord’s supper.
Again, it is a meal uniting heaven and earth. We’re
glad you are here in worship in person as we gather
“Before the throne above.” -Dr. Dan Sharp

YEAR OF THE BOOK!

THIS WEEK'S DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Do you remember where you were during the solar
eclipse of August 2017? Describe what it was like
looking into the sun. Were you afraid? What kind of
precautions did you take and why?
2. Upon encountering the burning bush, Moses is
instructed by God to take off his sandals (v. 5). Why
must he take off his sandals and why does he hide
his face (v. 6)? What does this reveal about God?
3. What does God observe about the Israelites in verse
7? What does God promise to do for them in verse 8?
What does this tell us about the character of God?
4. God specifically mentions the misery, cries, and
suffering of His people (v. 7). As the covenantal
community - the family of God - how can we be an
encouragement to one another in our sufferings?
5. God's promise to lead His people out of Egypt is met
with a question from Moses: "Who am I that I should
go...? (v. 10) God's response that He will be with him
(v. 12) offers great assurance that Moses and the
Israelites will not be alone in his endeavor. Knowing
what you do of God (especially revealed in this story),
what assurance is it knowing that God is with us?
6. In John 20:21-22, Jesus says to His disciples,
"“Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am
sending you...Receive the Holy Spirit.” Throughout
the Scriptures, God continues to send His people to
others who are suffering. What would it look like if
you viewed the places you worked, visited, studied,
shopped, vacationed, etc... as places God has sent
you? Would that change the way you interact with
others?
7. The promise of the presence of God with Moses is
furthered today to us in the person of the Holy Spirit.
What does it mean for us (as the Church of Jesus
Christ) to be equipped and empowered by the Holy
Spirit? Knowing that the Spirit works in and through
you, does that give you confidence or peace?
5 WAYS TO CONNECT A
FRIEND TO CHURCH

It might seem intimidating to invite a friend to church,

but in reality, you are the church. So technically, you’re
already halfway there.

1. Share a great video. As we study the Year of the

Book together, we’re sharing some of the teaching
videos on social media. They’re easy to share on
your page or message to a specific friend, and they
help make a complex and sometimes confusing book
accessible. facebook.com/firstpresorlando

2. Offer to read along with your friend. Speaking of the

Year of the Book, we made handy invite cards for you
to take with you. Pick a few up on your way out of
church this morning and share one with a friend that
you think might follow along with you.
3. Give them a cute little plant. All plants have a
lifespan. They require care. You’re not inclined to just
toss them in the trash. Which is why we chose them
to be our “invites” to share with friends to Easter at
the Dr. Phillips Center. (Get it?) Grab a few next month
and pass them along for April 1.
4. Find out their favorite Starbucks drink. Gift your friend
their favorite Starbucks coffee and take 30 minutes
to sit down with them, ask questions and just listen.
Then, commit to praying for them, regardless of
whether they show an interest in coming to church or
not.

5. Handwrite a standing invitation. Pick some

nice stationery, and write your friend a note of
encouragement, along with a standing “invitation” to
church any Sunday. You never know when they’ll take
you up on it. In the age of Instagram, handwritten
notes can matter more than you think.

Join us next Sunday, February 11 for Second Sunday. The

perfect day to bring a friend to church! We have a great
sermon planned as we continue the Year of the Book.
It will be a great Sunday for worship, coffee, and
fellowship!
