Alexandrite's green hue is a result of chromium impurities,
which in incandescent light apears as brownish, purple,
reddish-purple or red to viewer. Chromium is the same
coloring element found in emerald. Broadly color changing is
defined based on:
Percentage of color change: The AGL (American Gem
Lab) endorses the percentage of color change system. Alexandrite
with a 100% color change shows complete color change on every
axis - all facets change color. If half of the facets change color, the
gem is classified as a 50% change and so on. Most highly priced
alexandrite has a color change percentage of around 85-95%.
Stones with a 60% shift should be considered fine.
 Extend of color change: it is broadly defined as follow:
● Faint(below 50%): Vivid Green changing to Reddish Purple
● Moderate(50-70%): Fiery Yellowish Green to Yellowish Brown and
Lively Mint Green changing to Brownish Red
● Strong(70-90%): Vivid Yellowish Green to Brownish Pinkish Yellow
● Very Strong(90-100%): Though 100% color change is something
extreamly rare, Brownish Golden Green to Reddish Brown and Olive
