Project Needs
A commercial contractor in charge of the construction of an enclosed retail shopping mall needs design services for the
mall entrance, interior, and a retail shop. Assume that the mall will be located in the suburbs of the largest metropolitan
city nearest to your location; you will research design ideas for that region.
There will be several entrances into the facility; the entrance you design will be used as the prototype for the other en-
trances. The contractor is requesting that all mall entrances, storefronts, and aisles be based on a theme. The aisle ceiling
height is 22’. The contractor is open to design suggestions for the ceiling. Each retail store has an option of including a sec-
ond level inside it. A fluid design needs to be developed throughout the mall interior leaving a 22’ wide by 10’ high opening
for the individual stores with window openings above the 12’ mark to accommodate possible second levels within a store.
Individual storeowners will also need a storefront design for their establishments; you will provide at least two of these fa-
cade designs to show how the storefronts will tie into the theme for the mall. An interior design will also need to be devel-
oped for one single-level retail shop by the entrance that has a ceiling height of 10’. This shop sells products specifically re-
lated to the mall theme.
The design and all materials and finishes need to be used creatively and still reflect the concept for the mall and the needs
of the environment. A minimum of five sustainable materials must be used for the design; these may include sustainable
wood, recycled products, or otherwise sustainable building materials and finishes.

Project Location Details

Location: Denver, Colorado

Climate Description: “Winters are mild with an average daily high temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit and days reaching
60 degrees are not uncommon. Snow doesn’t stay on the ground long in Denver so golf courses and outdoor cafes are able
to stay open all year. In summer, Denver enjoys low relative humidity, making for beautiful, sun-filled days and cool, com-
fortable evenings. The average daily high temperature in August is a mild 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The mild weather is due in
part to the city’s altitude: 5,280 feet above sea level..” (“Weather”)
Design Theory
The Elements and Principles of Design Theory

“The elements and principles of design theory combines the elements, which are the physical objects used to create a
design and the principles, which are the way individual or combined elements work together or interact.” (AIPOD)

Elements may include: Principles may include:

Space Balance
Line Rhythm
Form Emphasis
Shape Proportion
Texture Scale
Time Unity
Color Harmony
Light Variety

Analysis and Application of Design Theory

The elements of design will be arranged to fulfill certain principles of design. The Rocky Mountain Mall design will use
sharp forms and straight lines to create an assymetric balance. The mall’s interior will be a balanced, rhythmic layout of
space and shapes. The chosen colors and textures will bring a dramatic contrast. Rustic, warmly-colored wood details will
create variety when placed next to smooth icy blue glass textures. An emphasis will be on the mountain inspiration of the
design. This can be seen in various mountain motifs and abstract mountain shapes. Light will create harmony in the interior
by flowing through a large skylight above the mall’s center aisle.
Idea Generation and Concept Development Sketching
Original Concept Sketches and Statement

Design Concept Statement:

The design for Rocky Mountain Mall will be inspired by

the stunning nature of Colorado, specifically the
mountains, sunrises, trees, and sky. Asymmetrical forms
will feature textures of rustic wood contrasting with
lightly tinted glass. The style could be considered
rustic-modern fusion. There will be a covered main
entrance to the mall that will feature an artful window
scheme with frosted glass mountain motifs on the
double doors. The Rocky Mountain Mall design will be
an eye-catching asset to its community.
REvised Concept Sketch and Statement

Revision includes:
Wood Planks Mentor’s suggestions of a larger sun motif, larger
more dramatic door pulls, and a more shallow covered
area.

Special Considerations

Check ADA space needs and requirements for number of entries, number of fixtures in restrooms, and hallway
width.
Make sure that 60” wheelchair turning radius’ are possible in all spaces, including retail shop.
Use sustainable/green products for finishes and furniture.
Add seating and benches consistantly throughout aisle.

Justification of Preliminary RCP

The lighting scheme seamlessly ties in to the original design concept created for Rocky
Mountain Mall. In the mall aisle, a massive skylight will run most of the aisle length,
creating gorgeous natural focal lighting. The ambient lighting here will be large, unique
copper pendants. The task lighting will include linear fluorescent pendants above the
dining area in the Food Court. In the retail store, Adventure Outfitters, eye-catching
pendants will be the focal lighting, recessed can fixtures will serve as the ambient lighting,
while copper track lights and small pendants will be the task lighting. All lighting
selections will have a high energy efficiency rating, to save costs and energy. The lighting
plan will provide ample light to accommodate those who have sight impairments.

Exterior Vignettes, Photoshop enhanced

The upper illustration is my

favorite, as the colors and tex-
tures represent the ones found
in Colorado nature, from the red
rocks to the rough stone
textures. The glass represents
the bright blue sky views from
the summit of a long hike. The
color and texture illustration ties
in perfectly with the original
design concept of natural
Colorado inspiration.
Floorplan illustrations

I prefer the illustration on the left, as the natural stone elements and colors best reflect the original design concept. The other illustration is inspired by the original design con-
cept, but stylized to create a more dramatic appeal. The left illustration creates a cozy, natural, upbeat feeling. The contrast between the terra cotta tile floor and the bright blue
fixtures is cheery and bold. The illustration on the right is bold as well, but more serious. It too has a high contrast between black and white, and red and blue. It appears up-
scale, dramatic, and daring.
Interior Vignettes

I prefer the upper illustration,

as the high contrasting shades
of red and blue best exemplify
the original design concept. They
are reminiscent of Colorado red
rocks against a bright blue sky.
The feeling created by this il-
lustration is warm, playful, and
bright. The feeling created by the
illustration below is mysterious,
cool, and exciting.

Project REflection and Analysis

The original design concept was inspired by the nature in sunny Colorado. This theme can be seen
throughout the design from the planning stage to the final presentation. The natural warm stone is
reminiscent of the Colorado red rocks. The skylight provides large amounts of natural light and blue
sky to the mall’s interior. The smoky gray tones provide nice contrast to the bright blues and reds; its
inspiration being the mountains at dusk. The touches of green textiles and rich wood colors represent
the thick Colorado forests and national parks.
Special attention was payed to the sustainability of the design. Many of the finishes and fixtures are
LEED certified, and are from reputable sources. The HVAC system of the mall uses only 60% of the typ-
ical energy consumption of a typical mall this size. The lumber used in the project is sourced from the
mall’s area of location. Many of the materials that finish the mall contain post-consumer recycled con-
tent. It was a project goal to use the least amount of VOC product content possible to provide a healthy
interior environment for occupants. The final outcome is a beautiful space that provides people with a
relaxing, comfortable, high-end shopping experience.
