Tronc Names Editor-In-Chief in Los Angeles Times

and New York Daily News

• Jim Kirk to Assume Editor-in-Chief Role in LA

• Jim Rich comes home to New York Daily News
• Lewis D’Vorkin becomes tronc’s Chief Content Officer

CHICAGO – Top journalists are assuming key roles at the Los Angeles Times, New York Daily
News and tronc. Effective immediately veteran editor and reporter Jim Kirk will be Editor-in-
Chief of the Los Angeles Times. Jim Rich has been appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily
News. Lewis D’Vorkin, a proven digital innovator, will be dedicated to leading tronc’s digital
content initiatives as Chief Content Officer of tronc.

Kirk joined tronc in August of 2017 and has served as the interim Executive Editor of the Los
Angeles Times. Kirk had been editor and publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times following a 25-
year career as a business editor, columnist and reporter with Crain’s Chicago Business,
Bloomberg and the Chicago Tribune.

“We are continuing to invest in high quality journalism, which will always be the company’s top
priority,” said Justin Dearborn, Chief Executive Officer of tronc. “Jim Kirk is a talented news
veteran who is the ideal person to lead the Los Angeles Times newsroom. We believe his passion
for news, and his management experience with big-city news teams make him uniquely
qualified. In addition, Jim Rich has deep experience in New York and is a well-established
media professional and we are glad to welcome him back to the Daily News this week.”

Effective, January 31, Pulitzer Prize winning Editor, Jim Rich will lead the Daily News as
Editor-in Chief. This is a homecoming of sorts for Rich who is rejoining the Daily News from
the Huffington Post where he most recently was Executive Editor. He previously served as
Editor-in-Chief at the Daily News and Executive Editor where he led the Daily News to its first
Pulitzer Prize for Public Service Journalism, in partnership with Pro Publica, for a series on
abuses by NYPD and NYC Law Department of nuisance abatement laws.

Rich helped reinstate the company as a relevant news source with intelligent and provocative
coverage, grew social media audience by 75% in one year, set record traffic numbers for five of
12 months and set nationwide conversation on issues such as presidential election, gun control
and police brutality via covers/coverage that went viral across the globe.

“tronc is excited to bring Jim Rich back into the Daily News family as Editor-in-Chief. Jim’s
passion for journalism and dynamic newsroom leadership are extremely valuable not just to the
Daily News, but to the broader New York City community who counts on us to keep them
informed about the issues facing our city, state and nation.” says Grant Whitmore, EVP and
General Manager, Eastern Region.

"Given Lewis' digital innovation around journalism, he is the right leader to continue to our
strategy. He’ll develop new digital, mobile, video, and audio content covering social issues,
technology and innovation, entertainment, food, health and other topical areas that resonate with
a national audience,” Dearborn said.

D’Vorkin will draw on his considerable experience at Forbes, The Wall Street
Journal, Newsweek and The New York Times. D’Vorkin is a seasoned journalist and media
pioneer, bringing 40 years of experience in both traditional and new media platforms. He has
most recently served as Chief Product Officer at Forbes, leading the editorial, product and
technology teams for Forbes Media and its related brands for the past seven years. He will also
leverage his platform knowledge from his eight years at AOL and his journalistic
entrepreneurialism as founder of True/Slant (sold to Forbes).

tronc is well-positioned to bring great content to a national audience. With 75 million monthly
active users across 10 websites and a total daily circulation of 1.1 million, tronc's reach extends
to the biggest market cities in the United States -- New York, Los Angeles and Chicago -- and
vibrant markets across the nation.
