Barrier-‐Free
Design
Barrier-‐free
design
can
be
defined
as
“Design
for
special
popula9ons
that
presents
no
physical
obstacles
or
barriers
to
access
and
allows
free
movement
in
the
environment.”
(Nielson)
This
concept
will
be
implemented
in
the
residen9al
space
for
the
kitchen
and
bathroom
plan.
Universal
Design
Universal
design
can
be
defined
as
“Design
that
meets
the
needs
of
all
users,
without
drawing
aden9on
to
those
with
disabili9es.”
(Nielson)
The
first
floor
will
be
the
focus
for
this
concept.
As
the
first
floor
will
be
used
for
business
func9ons,
it
must
be
user-‐friendly
for
all
people,
including
people
with
disabili9es
or
handicaps.
The
universal
design
will
accommodate
those
who
have
special
needs
while
appearing
subtle
in
this
purpose.
Style
Idea:
“Industrial
Farmhouse”
The
client
desires
an
interior
style
that
is
both
high-‐end
and
anything
but
usual.
One
poten9al
solu9on
for
this
may
be
a
style
that
blends
sleek,
modern
materials
with
rus9c
distressed
materials.
The
cool,
whimsical,
modern
pieces
will
create
a
perfect
contrast
and
balance
with
the
warm,
sturdy,
rus9c
elements.
This

will
create
a

that

been
guded,
and
it
is
located
in
Alexandria,
Kentucky.
The

of
project
is
to
create
a
place
where
formal
business,
thoroughbred
horses,
and
a
single
residence
can
func9onally
coexist.
The
first
floor
needs
to
be
planned
so
that
there
is
an
office
suite
on
one
side,
and
2-‐3
horse
stables
on
the
other
side
(where
tour
groups
will
be
lead
through).
The
second
floor
must
be
a
residence
for
the
manager
of
the
farm,
a
male
named
John
Hanson.
The
design
must
be
func9onal,
compliant
with
all
safety
codes
and
also
the
ADA,
and
aesthe9cally
pleasing.
Objec9ves
• Convert

area
on
the
first
floor,
and
a
residen9al
space
on
the
second
floor.
• Implement
barrier-‐free
and
universal
design
concepts
to
make
the
space
accessible
and
user-‐
friendly
for
the
longest
possible
period
of
9me.
• Sa9sfy
all

the
Americans

Disabili1es
Act
(ADA).
•
Protect
the
health
and
safety
of
the
occupants
as
a
first
priority,
while
allowing
the
design
of
the
space
to
perfectly
fit
the
intended
func9on.
• Create
an
aesthe9cally
pleasing
environment
with
high-‐end
finishes
and
unpredictable
style
that
supports
the
client’s
preferences
and
design
concept.
