1. Founder, Date Founded, Place Founded


 It developed in the Middle East in the 7th century C.E.
 It is founded by Mohammed (or sometimes called Muhammad Abdullah)
2. Who is the God for the believers of this religion?
 Allah
 Arabic word that means “God”
 The personal name of God
 He is the one God, Who has no partner
 He is the All-Knowing, and All-Merciful, the Supreme, the Sovereign
3. Basic Tenets/Principles/Beliefs
 Belief in Allah
 Allah is the all-powerful Creator of a perfect, ordered universe
 He is often referred to in terms and with names that emphasize his majesty
and superiority
 Belief in Angels
 Central to Islam
 The Qur’an was dictated to Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel
 Angels are said to be created from light and are obedient spirits to God
 4 great angels: Jibrael,Mika’il, Israfil and Izra’il
 Each person has 2 guardian angels who record their good and bad deeds
 Belief in Scriptures
 The Qur’an is a focal point of the Islamic faith
 It is the word of God revealed to Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel over
a 22 year period

bad behavior, details of the afterlife
 Belief in the Messengers of Allah
 Allah sent Prophets to all mankind as messengers for their guidance

divine commandments

 Comes from the verb shahida, meaning “he testifies” or “he bears witness”

 Salah
 A precise worship, different from praying on the inspiration of the moment
 Performed 5 times throughout the day
 Between first light and sunrise
 After the sun has passed the middle of the sky

 Zakah or Zakat
 Viewed as “compulsory charity”
 An obligation for those who have received their wealth from God to respond

 Born in Mecca around the year 570

 Muhammad and his wife Khadija had 4 daughters and 2 sons
 Fifteen years after his marriage, he began to have visions and hear
mysterious voices
 When he was about 40 years old an angel appeared to him in the form of a
man
 He preached a strong social justice message about equality and poverty
 Muhammad slowly began to attract some followers, most of them young and
of modest social standing
 He's prestige grew much larger after the war and the subsequent surrender
of the Meccans
 He’s life was cut short by his sudden death on June 8, 632 at about 60 years
old
 Within 100 years, Islam spread across the world, occupying more territory
than the Roman Empire
