Chapter 2 General Description

MasterGate 230/1 (MG 230/1) is a communication station used to interconnect separate Master
Control networks, and to connect external computers to the ABB Master system.

2.1 Control Network

A Control network consists of a number of MasterPiece (MP), MasterView (MV), Advant Sta-
tion (AS) and/or SuperView (SV) stations which are connected through the MasterNet network.
A Local Control network handles a section or group of equipment in a Control network. See
Figure 2-1. Stations in the Local control network can only communicate with other stations con-
nected to the same Local control network.

2.3 System Structure MasterGate 230/1

The MasterGate 230/1 is a communication station in the ABB Master system. It can handle up
to 5 communication interfaces :
1. Communication to the own Control network through MasterBus 300/300E/200
2. Communication to other Control networks and to AS 500 stations on the plant network
through MasterBus 300/300E
3. Communication between External computer on the EXCOM link and the own Control net-
work
4. Communication to External computer through GCOM point-to-point links
5. Communication to External computer, SV 900, AS 800 and SV 100 through GCOM multi-
drop links.
See Figure 2-3.
For communication between ABB Master and external computers two (2) protocols are imple-
mented:
1. EXCOM protocol
2. GCOM protocol (multi-drop and point-to-point).

2.4 EXCOM Protocol

The EXCOM protocol is a simple ASCII-protocol for ASCII/TTY connection (RS232C), easy
to use for small data exchange. EXCOM uses a simple question-answer dialog where a read/
write command from the external computer will be answered with data and/or status.

2.4.1 EXCOM Connection

The MasterGate 230/1 handles one (1) EXCOM connection. Bitrate, number of stop bits, parity
etc. are fetched from the MasterGate database.

2.5 GCOM Protocol

The GCOM protocol provides the external computer a number of functions. It is useful for fast
transfers of large amounts of data between ABB Master and external computers.
The gateway function converts the GCOM protocol to ABB Master communication system
(MasterNet) and thereby enables the external computer to use almost all of the functions in
MasterPiece.
The GCOM protocol is a basic data transfer protocol. No virtual connections have to be estab-
lished before start of data transfer.
Its simple 3 layer structure, multi-drop link or point- to-point connection, and freedom from vir-
tual connec- tions and segmentation makes the GCOM protocol easy to implement in an exter-
nal computer, see Figure 2-4.
The protocol is implemented as a datalink user. The datalink is a point-to-point asynchronous
(ADLP-10), synchronous (X25.2 LAPB) or a multi-drop link (IEEE 802.3). ADLP-10 (ABB
Data Link Protocol) is a asynchronous datalink protocol based on ECMA-16 and ECMA-24.
The X25.2 and ADLP-10 protocols are point-to-point connections, and therefore no recovery
functions for bit-errors etc are needed. On the multi-drop bus (IEEE 802.3) transit vector and
acknowledge handling must be included.
For VAX/VMS, the GCOM protocol is implemented as a data link user on an IEEE 802.3,
X25.2 or ADLP-10 data link. The IEEE 802.3 and ADLP-10 software for VAX/VMS are avail-
able as products.

Section 2.5.1 GCOM Connection

2.5.1 GCOM Connection

The MasterGate 230/1 can handle up to six (6) GCOM connections.
GCOM connections 1 and 2 are point-to-point, synchronous X25.2, full duplex connections
(Called external computer 1 and 2).
GCOM connections 3 and 4 are point-to-point asynchronous half duplex connections, ADLP-10
(Called external computer 3 and 4).
GCOM connections 5 and 6 are multi-drop bus connections, based on IEEE 802.3 (EtherNet).
The characteristics for a GCOM point-to-point asynchronous ADLP-10 link are:
• Speed 9600 bit/s
• Character length 8 bit
• Parity even
• Stopbit one (1)
• Physical interface RS 232C or current loop
On the ADLP-10 link the MasterGate 230/1 is of type “Subordinated”.
The characteristics for a GCOM point-to-point synchronous X25.2 link are:
• Speed 19200 bit/s
Physical interfaceRS 232C, RS 449 or coaxial modem
On the X25 link the MasterGate 230/1 is of type “DTE”.
The characteristics for the GCOM multi-drop IEEE 802.3 bus are:
The multi-drop link has an IEEE 802.2 class 1, connectionless unconfirmed data link serv-
ice, and IEEE 802.3 CSMA/CD medium access control. This means that there is no spe-
cific master station, and that all stations have equal access to the bus. The transmission rate
is 10 Mbit/s. The bus can handle up to four (4) computers.

2.7 MasterGate 230/1 Addresses

A MasterGate 230/1 belongs both to the Control network and to the Plant network. This means
that it also has two (2) logical addresses (node numbers) in the system. See Figure 2-5.
1. Towards the own Control network the MasterGate 230/1 has network number equal to the
bus number connected to MasterGate 230/1 (11..19, 21..29, .... 91..99) and node number
always equal to 127.
2. Towards Plant network the MasterGate 230/1 has a network number in the ranges 100..119
and 126..127 and node number equal to the own Control network number (1..9).

2.7.1 Addressing ABB Master Stations in a Control Network

An ABB Master station in a Control network is addressed with the logical address it has in the
Control network.
Local control networks in a Control network are not direct reachable from other Control net-
works or the Plant network.

2.7.2 Addressing External Computers in Plant Network

All node numbers on the plant network must be unique. This includes all nodes connected to the
MasterBus 300/300E and to the GCOM multi-drop bus.

2.7.2.1 GCOM Multidrop

A computer connected to the GCOM multi-drop link (IEEE 802.3) is directly addressed with its
own logical address. Network number = 110..119. The node numbers which the multi-drop con-
nected computers can use depends on which MasterGate 230/1 they are connected to, according
to the following:

2.7.2.2 GCOM point-to-point

An External computer connected to a point-to-point connection is addressed as follows:
Network number = 100 + control network number for the MasterGate 230/1 to which the
external computer is connected, (netw = 101..109).
Node number = Control network number for the MasterGate 230/1 to which the external
computer is connected, (node = 1..9).

2.7.2.3 MasterBus 300/300E

An Advant Station 500 connected to the MB300/300E on the plant network is directly
addressed with its own logical address:
Network number = 126..127
Node number = 10..99.

2.7.3 Addressing Functions in MasterGate 230/1

The following addresses are used to access functions, such as system status, symbol handling
and clock synchronization, in the MasterGate 230/1:
Access from Plant network The MasterGate 230/1’s Plant network address, (node=1..9).
Access from Control network The MasterGate 230/1’s Control network address, (node=127).
External computers connected on the EXCOM link do not address the MasterGate 230/1. The
address to the end node in the control network is always used.

Chapter 3 Functional Definition

3.1 EXCOM Protocol

The EXCOM protocol uses a simple question-answer dialogue where a read/write command
from the external computer will be answered with data and/or status. For more information
about functions and the EXCOM protocol, see the “EXCOM - Implementer’s Manual”.

3.2 GCOM Protocol

When the external computer uses the GCOM protocol the gateway function in
MasterGate 230/1 permits the external computer to use most of the functions in the ABB Master
system.

3.2.1 Functions for External Computer

This section specifies the functions in the ABB Master system available for the external com-
puters.

3.2.1.1 Data Subscription

The function ‘data subscription’ gets data from objects in a MasterPiece. A ‘data subscription’
is of type ‘demand’ (single shot), ‘on event’, or ‘cyclic’. A ‘cyclic data subscription’ can have
three alternative cycle times. The cycle times are defined at the system generation of the Master-
Piece. ‘Cyclic data subscription’ should not be used on an asynchronous GCOM connection.
Using this function external computers can work against the following object types in the
ABB Master system :
• Analog input
• Analog output
• Digital input
• Digital output
• PIDCON (Process controller)
• RATIO station (Ratio controller)
• MANUAL station (Reference generator)

3.2.1.2 Data Set and Text Set Communication

The Data Set Communication (DSC) and the Text Set Communication (TSC) functions transfer
data ‘cyclically’ or ‘on request’ between the external computer and the ABB Master databases
in the form of Data/Text Set Packets (DSP’s/TSP’s). The DSP’s/TSP’s are numbered from 1 to
255 in ABB Master. One DSP consists of 1 to 24 values (DAT’s). A value can be one (1) real,
one (1) integer or 32 digital values (boolean). A TSP includes 20, 48 or 72 ASCII characters.
The data layout of DSP’s/TSP’s is defined by the MasterPiece application programmer.
Computers connected to the GCOM multi-drop (IEEE 802.3) link can send and receive up to
255 DSP’s and up to 255 TSP’s to/from each MasterPiece.
External computers connected to a GCOM point-to-point connection can send 32 DSP’s and
receive 32 DSP’s to/from each MasterPiece. The function DSC should be used if the external

computer is used to continuously controls a process part. The advantage of DSC (compared to
order) is that, if the data does not appear in a cycle time in the database in ABB Master, the
application software (PC program) can interlock the process or continue by using default data. It
is also possible to inform the operator in the ABB Master system that the object is handled by an
external computer.
The cycle time for data transfer between ABB Master and external computer is determined by a
parameter in the MasterPiece database.

Section 3.2.1 Functions for External Computer

3.2.1.3 Order
With the function ‘order’ an external computer can control and change parameters for objects in
the ABB Master system. (Object may be of type Analog Input, Analog Output, etc). Objects
which are continuously controlled by external computers should be handled by the ‘DSC’ func-
tion.
External computers can control the following objects in the ABB Master system with the func-
tion ‘order’ :
• Analog input
• Analog output
• Digital input
• Digital output.
The following attributes can be changed for different object types:

3.2.1.4 Symbolic Name Translation

The external computer on the plant network can send the symbolic name of an object to a
MasterPiece. The The MasterPiece will translate the name to a logical database reference and
return it to the external computer. With this function the external computer can build up a cross
reference table between logical database addresses in the ABB Master system and the external
computer.
The external computer uses the MasterGate 230/1 plant network address when sending the
request for symbolic name translation. The MasterGate 230/1 distributes the request to all nodes
in the own control network.

3.2.1.5 Clock Synchronization

Clock synchronization on the plant network can be handled by one control network or an
external computer on the plant network can handle the clock synchronization throughout the
system.

Synchronization from an external computer

If an external computer connected through a GCOM link shall handle the time synchronization
in the whole system it must send time synchronization messages to all MasterGate 230/1 which
then will distribute it within control networks. The following setting is default:
• In all MasterGate 230/1 the CLOCK_SYNCH database element shall have the property
CLK_SEND = 1. This means that MasterGate 230/1 only distributes clock synchroniza-
tion within the own control network.

Synchronization from one control network

If the time synchronization shall be handled by one of the control networks the following must
be done:
• In the MasterGate 230/1 of the control network that will be the clock master, the
CLOCK_SYNCH database element must have the property CLK_SEND = 3. This
MasterGate 230/1 sends synchronization messages to all nodes on the plant network
(including other MasterGate 230/1 nodes).
• In all other MasterGate 230/1 the CLOCK_SYNCH database element must have the prop-
erty CLK_SEND = 1. These MasterGate 230/1 distribute the clock synchronization mes-
sages within its own control networks.

Blocking of synchronization from plant network

If clock synchronization from plant network is not allowed in one control network:
• In that control network, the MasterGate 230/1 database element CLOCK_SYNCH must
have the property CLK_SEND = 0.

3.2.1.6 Communication Status

The function ‘communication status’ gives the external computer access to status of the units in
the ABB Master Control networks.
External computers on a GCOM/IEEE 802.3 connection can request for status of all
ABB Master stations connected to all the MasterGate 230/1.
External computers connected to a point-to-point connection on a MasterGate 230/1 can request
status for ABB Master units connected to maximum 4 MasterBus 300/300E/200 networks.
After a request, the external computer will get status changes on units as events.

3.2.2 Functions for ABB Master

This section specifies the functions in the Computers in the Plant network, available from the
ABB Master system (Advant Station, MasterView and SuperView) (if they are implemented in
the computers).
The MasterGate 230/1 permits the ABB Master system to work against the same functions in an
external computer as the external computer can use in ABB Master (see section 3.2.1.1-3.2.1.5).
However, on the point-to- point connection, ABB Master can only work against external com-
puter 1 on each MasterGate node with the functions order to object, data subscription and sym-
bolic name translation.
Symbolic name translation from a Control network is controlled by the operator on the MV 800
or AS 500 Operator Station.

3.2.3 Security Handling

The MasterGate gives both the ABB Master system and the external computer a data flow con-
trol. The MasterGate protects the ABB Master system from the use of unauthorized functions.

3.2.4 Error Handling

The external computer receives error codes if, for example, a function is not authorized, or the
data flow is too high from the external computer.

3.3 Plant Network Function

The MasterGate 230/1 connects the own Control network to the Plant network (see Table 3-2).
External computers are members of the Plant network.

Chapter 6 Performance

Maximum 50 messages per second may pass one MasterGate 230/1 (valid when GCOM multi-
drop is used).
Each MasterPiece can handle a maximum of 5 messages per second to/from the own
MasterGate 230/1.
With the function ‘data subscription’, an external computer can work (at the same time) against
up to 300 objects. Of those max 30 can have cycle time 3 seconds and the remaining must have
cycle time 9 seconds or be of type ‘demand’.
Example of messages are :
• One data subscription request with 1-16 objects
• An answer on a request which can contain of 1-48 objects depending on the object type
and access type
• One DSP (with up to 24 values( a value can be one integer, one real or 32 boolean))
• One order.

An answer on data subscription request for historical time tagged data (TTD) consists of up to
7 messages.
If the external computer only uses the DSC function, it can send/receive 24x50 = 1200 values
per second (1200 (integer/real) or 38400 (boolean) object values).
If the external computer only uses the function ‘data subscription’ and all values are logged and
stored as historical time tagged data in the MasterPiece. Then the external computer can request
for 402 values in one TTD request. The answer is received in 7 messages. The external comput-
ers then receives maximum (50/(7+1))402 = 2500 values per second.
The MasterGate 230/1 will delay a signal between the ABB Master system and the external
computer with maximum 20 ms.
