FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF A HEAVY

HEAT EXCHANGER

Introduction

A heat exchanger is a piece of equipment built for efficient heat transfer from one

medium to another. The media may be separated by a solid wall, so that they never mix, or they

may be in direct contact. These are widely used in space heating, refrigeration, air conditioning,

power plants, chemical plants, petrochemical plants, petroleum refineries, natural gas

processing, and sewage treatment. The classic example of a heat exchanger is found in an

internal combustion engine in which a circulating fluid known as engine coolant flows through

radiator coils and air flows past the coils, which cools the coolant and heats the incoming air.

Design for Heat Exchanger

I. Limits of Cooling and Jacket Water

(Reference: Power Plant Engineering by Frederick T. Morse, p. 178)

Theoretical and Actual Limits of Cooling Water and Jacket Water

𝐭 𝐣𝐢 = 37.8oC (jacket inlet temperature)
𝐭 𝐣𝐨 = 65.6oC (jacket outlet temperature)
𝐭 𝐜𝐰𝐢 = 29.45oC (water inlet temperature-average)
𝐭 𝐜𝐰𝐨 = 48.85oC (cooling water outlet temperature-average)

Solving for ∆tmax,

∆tmax = t jo − t cwo
∆tmax = 65.6oC − 48.85oC
∆tmax = 16.75oC

Solving for ∆tmin,

∆tmin = t ji − t cwi
∆tmin = 37.8oC − 29.45oC
∆tmin = 8.35oC

II. Mass Flow Rate of Cooling and Jacket Water

Qj = mj x Cpj x ∆tj (eq. 1)

where:
Qj = Heat rejected from jacket water
Qj = 494 KW (from Wartsila 8V31 @ 750 rpm)
mj = mass of jacket water
Cpj = 4.187 kJ/kgoK (constant specific heat of water)
∆tj = temperature difference of jacket water

∆tj = 𝐭 𝐣𝐨 − 𝐭 𝐣𝐢 (eq. 2)
∆tj = 65.6oC − 37.8oC
∆tj = 27.8 oC
where:
t jo = jacket outlet temperature
t ji = jacket inlet temperature

Solving for mass of jacket water

From eq. 1
𝐐𝐣
mj = ∆𝐭𝐣 𝐱 𝐂𝐩𝐣 (eq. 3)
494
mj = (27.8) 𝑥 (4.187)

mj = 4.24 kg/s or 15,728.53 kg/hr

Then,

Circulating Water Required

CWR= mCW x vf
where:
mCW = mj = 15,728.53 kg/hr

tjo + tji
vf = specific volume of saturated liquid @ tave = 2
65.6+37.8
tave = = 51.7 oC

From Steam Table @ 51.7oC

1000 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠
vf = 0.00101302 m3/kg x 1 𝑚3

vf = 1.01302 liters/kg

Therefore,

CWR= 15,728.53 kg/hr x 1.01302 liters/kg

CWR= 15,933.32 liters/hour
