NATIONAL BOOK WEEK 2010: PROGRAMME INFORMATION  
MUSEUM AFRICA, 10 – 13 SEPTEMBER 2010  
 
The programme is designed to cater for a wide range of industry stakeholders and the public and has been split into 
two different audiences, i.e. 
(A) Events for Industry, SMMEs, Libraries, CSI Programmes, Reading Promotion and other interested parties, and 
(B) Events/ Activities for Children, Youth and Adults, School & Community Groups, Adult learners, Teachers, Librarians. 
 
Programme activities that appeal to both audiences, appear in both sections. 
National Book Week Outreach Programmes are also highlighted. 
 
(A) EVENTS AND PROGRAMMES FOR INDUSTRY, SMME’s, LIBRARIES, CSI PROGRAMMES, 
READING PROMOTION AND OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES

EXHIBITION 
The Exhibition will display different programmes and products that encourage reading amongst children, youth and 
adults.   This is also a networking opportunity for all involved in reading promotion. 
 
SOUTH AFRICAN LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND 
Blindlib will be promoting their services to the blind at the National Book Week Exhibition.   They will be having 
demonstrations of their tactile books, which are also used to introduce babies and toddlers to books. A must see.  
 
BOOK SALES 
One of the aims of National Book Week is to stimulate access to books.   Books will be sold at reduced prices… 
Children’s books starting at R10 ‐ Novels etc. starting at R40 ‐ Local titles, children’s books and everything in between 
will be available.   
 
OUR VOICES, OUR STORIES – Authors’ Programme 
The Authors’ Programme will include speeches by some of the leading creative minds in South Africa.   They will 
interrogate various ways in which we can promote the culture of reading and engender wider audiences for South 
African literature.   Special attention will be paid to Children’s Writing and Writing in Indigenous Languages.   A cross‐
generation of prominent South African writers will discuss audience development for SA literature in two panels 
entitled Our Voices.   The role of the media in promoting the culture of reading will be discussed in two panels, The 
Review and Media and Literature. The line‐up will include a number of leading literary journalists and reviewers from 
some of the leading national newspapers.   Every presentation will be followed by a discussion with the audience.

*PAN‐AFRICAN WRITERS’ SYMPOSIUM 
Hosted by ANFASA, the Symposium will address challenges facing Academic and non‐fiction authors.   The two‐day 
Symposium will include speakers from across the continent and will provide insight into current trends in policy, 
research and copyright.

READING PROMOTION SYMPOSIUM 
Greater coordination is required in reading promotion and collectively we should be working towards a national 
campaign for reading. We look forward to having your input and also hearing more about what is happening at 
reading projects, libraries, and CSI projects with regard to reading promotion. National Book Week is an opportunity 
to share and network with others.

HOW TO … sessions 
There are three HOW TO … sessions that focus on developing skills amongst industry and sector practitioners.    
 
Session 1: HOW TO write… to be published 
Moky Makura will present an interactive session on How to write …. to be published… with a focus on writing chic lit 
romance.  Nollybooks is always looking for emerging young writers.  Essentially, the session will be a brief writing 
course on writing to be published in a new innovative way.

Session 2: HOW TO start/run a Book Fair 
We have had some very successful book fairs over the last years. Come and listen to some of the lessons learnt. And 
learn how to set up your own local book fair/festival.

Session 3: HOW TO get published.     
Louise  Grantham  will  share  her  experiences  as  a  publisher  with  authors  and  independent  publishers.  Louise  has 
extensive  experience  as  a  lecturer  and  publishers  with  one  of  the  major  publishing  houses.  She  is  currently  an 
independent publisher.

THE FUTURE OF READING  
A panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges facing authors, publishers and retailers, as the accessibility to 
electronic reading increases.   Speakers include Steve Vosloo from the Shuttleworth Foundation – who will focus on 
the m4Lit programme, Ben Williams, Book SA, and Melvin Kaabwe, Digital Manager, van Schaik Bookstores.

PUKU – ELINOR SISULU 
Puku is a children's writing project – all welcome. Teachers, librarians can learn a great deal for their own reading 
promoting activities.

AFRICAN LANGUAGES IN CHILDREN’S PUBLISHING: REPORT 
Prof Viv Edwards and Dr Jacob Marriote Ngwaru of the University of Reading, UK will present the findings of a two‐
year study of publishing for children in African languages, in South Africa.

BOOK CLUBS 
Moky Makura of NollyBooks will host a book club session that will include discussions about the book and the issues – 
book prizes will be given away to the audience.

The Department of Arts and Culture will make a presentation about the establishment of Book Clubs as a strategy to 
promote the culture of reading. The DAC established a Book Club in 2007 and holds regular monthly sessions and 
public lectures with some of the leading South African authors. To date close to 30 authors have been hosted in the 
Book Club. The Department published a Book Club Information Booklet with the purpose of assisting and encouraging 
the establishment of Book Clubs in the various sectors of the South African society.

POETRY  
National Book Week will provide a public platform for poetry recital by young and aspiring poets who will get instant 
feedback  from  some  of  the  leading  creative  minds  in  the  country.  Prof  Keorapetse  Kgositsile,  the  National  Poet 
Laureate,  Masoja  Msiza,  a  distinguished  performance  poet  and  Lebo  Mashile,  an  internationally  acclaimed  poetess, 
will convene the sessions and give guidance about honing skills for poetry writing, performance and publishing.  This 
programme  will  attempt  to  give  exposure  to  emerging  poetic  voices  and  it  forms  part  of  the  skills  development 
programme of National Book Week.

SAPPI GREEN TEXT ‐ PRESENTATION 
Graeme Futter, Sappi Marketing Manager – Brand Communications will make a presentation on Sappi Green Text and 
why publishers should be specifying locally produced paper products for local book publishing.

(B) EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH AND ADULTS, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY 
GROUPS, ADULT LEARNERS, TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS 
Everybody is welcome to attend and entrance is free.   It is essential for schools and other groups who

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR LIBRARY 
Do you feel intimated by libraries…?   Are you shy to join a library in case you are not sure what to do…?   Come and 
see how easy and fun it is to use your public library.   For all ages! Adults welcome. 
 
CHILDREN’S READING TENT 
The Children’s Reading Tent will be a homely environment for children to enjoy storytelling at its best!   Storytellers 
will provide exciting and interactive sessions for children between the ages of 4 – 13.   Children will also be 
encouraged to enjoy silent reading time while spending time in the Reading Tent.  
Storytellers include MacMillan Talking Storytellers, Kwesukela, BK Publishers and special guest, KB.   There will also be 
theatre group performances at intervals during the programme. 
 
CHILDREN’S MAGIC TENT 
From the tranquillity of the Reading Tent, children will be able to explore their way to the Magic Tent, which will be 
filled with fun activities for children, including some book prizes, treasure hunts and puppet shows.    
 
ADULT’S READING TENT 
The Adult’s Reading Tent will provide an opportunity for adults to explore books through group reading sessions, 
demonstrations, book club information and quiet reading spaces.

OUTREACH PROGRAMMES 
 
 
BOOKS ON BIKES 
10 youth from the Youth Empowerment Project in Khayelitsha will cycle between Cape Town and Johannesburg, to 
reach JNB at the opening of National Book Week 2010. The aim is to raise awareness around reading and books, and 
to donate books. This is a public campaign – the public will be asked to donate books. Industry can also donate books 
to this campaign. This is a very promising programme that will become an annual event with National Book Week. A 
departure event and accommodation is being sponsored by Southern Sun Hotels throughout the country for this cycle 
trip. 
 
SAPPI BOOK DONATION PROGRAMME 
SAPPI Book Donation Programme will support National Book Week through the donation of books to 24 libraries 
around the country. Librarians will go to Exclusive Books and choose books, which Sappi have delivered to the 
libraries.  
 
VAN SCHAIK BOOK DONATION PROGRAMME 
Van Schaik will be donating leisure reading books to schools and libraries in Gauteng during National Book Week.  The 
formal handover to the national Department of Basic Education and Department of Arts & Culture takes place at 
Museum Africa. A number of school teachers and librarians will be present at the event.
