Prerequisite :
COURSE OBJECTIVE
To understand the operation of machining and machine tool and geometry of
cutting tool

To learn about the mechanics of machining and what type of forces generated
2. during machining and merchant analysis
To understand the heat generation in machining and effect of cutting

temperature and grinding process and super finishing processes
To understand the Design of the speed gear box and learn about work

SYLLABUS
Unit I
Machining: Introduction, role of machining in industrial application, Concept of genetrix and
directrix, Geometry of cutting tools, Conversion of tool angles for single point cutting tool
Unit II
Mechanics of machining: chip formation mechanism, classification of chips, characteristics of
continuous chip formation, shear angle, cutting strain, chip reduction coefficient, built up edge
formation, orthogonal and oblique cutting, shear plane and shear zone theories, cutting force
analysis and estimation, Merchant circle diagram, effects of machining parameters on cutting
force, dynamometers principle and working.
Unit III
Heat generation and cutting temperature: location of heat generation, effects of cutting
temperature on job and tool, determination of cutting temperature, control of cutting temperature
and role of cutting fluid, effect of machining parameters on cutting temperature. Failures of
cutting tools, cutting tool materials
Machining time & machinability: Types of cutting tool wear, Tool life, cutting tool materials,
estimation of machining time, definition of machinability, chip breakers.
Unit IV
Grinding & super finishing operations: basic principles, grinding wheel specification, mechanism
and mechanics of grinding, grindability, lapping, honing, super finishing techniques, economics of
machining & grinding.
Unit V
Machine tool: Introduction to machine tool, specification of machine tool, role of kinematic
structure in machine tool, methods of changing speed and feed in machine tool
Unit VI
Design of speed gear box, work holding devices, Jigs and fixture
