GAS PIPELINE FROM BULGARIA TO AUSTRIA VIA
ROMANIA AND HUNGARY - PCI 7.1.5
(Development on the Romanian territory of the gas
transmission system along the corridor BG–RO–HU–AT)

14th ERRA Energy Investment and Regulation Conference

2
October 5-6, 2015  Bucharest, Romania
BRUA (1)
SCOPE:
- To create gas transmission capacity in between the existent points of
interconnection with the Hungarian and the Bulgarian gas transmission
systems
- To create capacities to take over and circulate gas from the Caspian
Region or from other potential sources (onshore/off-shore/LNG) to South
Europe, thus ensuring the connection with Central Europe by means of the
SEE countries (ex. The Vertical corridor).

INVESTMENT:
- Upgrading of existent pipelines sections
- Construction of new pipelines in the Southern-part of Romania to the
Western border along the route Giurgiu - Podișor – Corbu – Hațeg – Horia
(length: approx. 550 km)
- Construction of 3 compressor stations

- Enables 1.75 bcma to Hungary (by Horia-Csanadpalota interconnection), at 40 bar
border pressure;
- Enables 1.5 bcma, to Bulgaria (by Ruse-Giurgiu interconnection) at 30 bar border
pressure;
Total estimated value = Euro 470.6 mil.
Stage 2 BRUA
- Enables 4.4 bcma to Hungary (by Horia-Csanadpalota interconnection), at 40 bar
border pressure;
- Enables 1.5 bcma, to Bulgaria (by Ruse-Giurgiu interconnection) at 30 bar border
pressure;
Total estimated value = Euro 80.4 mil.

TARGET:
- Remove the bottlenecks in the Romanian gas transmission system
- Diversify the sources of gas supply to the European countries
- Maximize the gas transmission capacity to Hungary, enabling bi-direction
flows
- Maximize the gas transmission capacity to Bulgaria, enabling bi-direction
flows
- Increase the security of supply and the competitiveness of the European
gas market
- Streamline the operation of the Romanian gas transmission systems by
ensuring proper flexibility of the technological nodes Podisor, Corbu,
Hurezani and Hateg
- Facilitate the interconnection between the SEE PCIs as agreed by the

DEVELOPMENT ON THE ROMANIAN TERRITORY OF THE SOUTHERN GAS
CORRIDOR ENSURING ACCESS TO THE BLACK SEA GAS (BLACK SEA –
PODISOR PIPELINE)
SCOPE:
- To create a link between the Black Sea shore (the Black Sea outlet for the
transmission of off-shore gas) and the Technological Node Podisor
- To ensure the connection to the Gas Pipeline from Bulgaria to Austria via
Romania and Hungary (BRUA) allowing the Black Sea gas to be transported to
the Central and Western European Countries.
TECHNICAL DATA:
- Construction of a new pipeline (length: approx. 285 km)
TOTAL ESTIMATED VALUE = Euro 262 mil.
ESTIMATED DEADLINE = Quarter I, 2019 (to be aligned with the Black Sea off-
shore development project).
The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) offered Transgaz USD 956.000 in
non-reimbursable funding for the above-mentioned pipeline expansion projects.
The funding will allow for the improvement and finalization of the Feasibility Studies
related to BRUA and Black Sea – Podisor Pipeline.
