ASEAN Peatland Forests Project (APFP)

Rehabilitation and Sustainable Use of Peatland Forests in Southeast Asia

2nd Workshop Announcement

Workshop on
Options for Carbon Financing to Support Peatland Management
DATE
4-6 October 2010
VENUE
Hotel Pangeran Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia
Background
Peatland ecosystems contain more organic carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystems ranging from
3.5 times more carbon per ha in mineral soil to as much as 10 times in the tropics. Peatlands in Se
Asia comprise the largest single carbon store in the region and play a key role in regulation of regional
and global climate. Peatlands in the region can store up to 6000 tonnes of carbon per ha which is
more than 10 times higher than carbon stocks in other forest types. While this ecosystem functions as
a natural carbon store, landuse changes and deforestation leading to deterioration of peatlands result
in the release of carbon into the atmosphere. Emissions from peat oxidation and fires are estimated to
generate CO2 emission of up to 1 billion tonnes each year in the region. Restoration of degraded
peatland ecosystems is an effective way to reduce emissions and maintain the carbon storage
function of peatlands. It is anticipated that in the future – carbon finance may be one of the important
sources of funds to support protection and rehabilitation of peatlands.

The Workshop
This workshop is jointly organised by the ASEAN Secretariat and the Global Environment Centre
(GEC) in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment of the Government of Indonesia and the Riau
Provincial Government - as part of the ASEAN Peatland Forests Project (APFP). The workshop aims
to bring together experts from the region to discuss and explore the options for implementing carbon
financing to support conservation and rehabilitation of the sites and for the benefit of local
stakeholders involved in peatland management.

To meet the aims of the meeting, we will be inviting a broad range of stakeholders including:
International carbon fund managers; national and local government institutions, researchers; NGOs/
CBOs; donors and international organisations.

Expected Outputs
The expected outputs from this meeting are:
• Sharing the current status of Carbon financing for peatlands in Se Asia
• Identification of appropriate carbon financing mechanisms and modality specifically for sites in
Se Asia

Indicative Programme (presentations to be confirmed)
