NOTES
Traditional Worship
This Sunday is a little unique in that our brass
ensemble and various First Pres choir members
will be leading us in worship. Next Sunday we will
welcome our new Organist/Asst. Music Director,
Steve Strite and his family. The closing hymn text
is new to us, as this hymn was not in our previous
hymnal. The tune is most familiar as Crown Him
with Many Crowns. The text we have in the hymnal
is but two of the fourteen verses! Paul Gerhardt,
the author, experienced much tragedy in the early
years of his life with the deaths of four children and
his wife of thirteen years. As a pastor, he was the
center of political and theological controversy. This
hymn reflects great confidence and deep trust in a
loving God in the midst of strife and stress. It is a
wonderful hymn to memorize, especially in times
of difficulty. John Wesley has provided us with
the best translation from the German. It is a kind
of paraphrase of Psalm 37, a marvelous psalm for
worriers! “Give to the winds your fears.”

YEAR OF THE BOOK!

THIS WEEK'S DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Why is forgiveness so difficult to ask for and so
challenging to extend to others?
2. In response to the brothers' request for forgiveness
and after telling them not to fear, Joseph asks, "Am I
in the place of God?" (v. 19) Why do you think Joseph
posed that question to his brothers?
3. Joseph states that God intends for good what man
(his brothers) intended for harm (v. 20). For what good
purpose did God intend in the situation between
Joseph and his brothers?
4. Can you think of a time when something harmful
was done to you by someone in the Church, and yet
something good came out of it?
5. In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus teaches us to ask God to
"forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our
debtors" (Matt. 6:12), highlighting the importance of
incorporating forgiveness into our daily lives. Why do
you think forgiveness is so important for Christians?
6. It is easy to think that the world is getting worse as
time goes on. While that may be true to a certain
degree, we know as Christians we are part of a larger
story - one in which we see and experience God's
larger plan unfolding. How does our understanding of
God's larger plan impact how we interact with people
who are not part of the Church?
7. So much of how we behave (what we say and do) in
our relationships with others offers a witness to what
we believe. What role can forgiveness play in the
witness (either in word or action) you offer to your
neighbors?
LENT BEGINS
We begin the Lenten season Wednesday,
February 14. Forty days have been set
aside, among other things, to be a kind of
“reckoning with God.” As you move day-by-
day through these next 40 days leading up
to Easter Sunday, may you see the health of
your faith more clearly than ever before as
we journey with Jesus during His last days on
earth. Make these days a conscious effort to
grow in faith.
