NOTES
Traditional Worship
This Sunday is a little unique in that our brass
ensemble and various First Pres choir members
will be leading us in worship. Next Sunday we will
welcome our new Organist/Asst. Music Director,
Steve Strite and his family. The closing hymn text
is new to us, as this hymn was not in our previous
hymnal. The tune is most familiar as Crown Him
with Many Crowns. The text we have in the hymnal
is but two of the fourteen verses! Paul Gerhardt,
the author, experienced much tragedy in the early
years of his life with the deaths of four children and
his wife of thirteen years. As a pastor, he was the
center of political and theological controversy. This
hymn reflects great confidence and deep trust in a
loving God in the midst of strife and stress. It is a
wonderful hymn to memorize, especially in times
of difficulty. John Wesley has provided us with
the best translation from the German. It is a kind
of paraphrase of Psalm 37, a marvelous psalm for
worriers! “Give to the winds your fears.”
