The Open Distance Learning (ODL)
Method Explained
What is ‘Open’ about the OUSL?

At the OUSL we believe that anyone who wants to study further should be given the
opportunity to do so. We have an „open admissions policy‟ supported by a ladder of
opportunities from pre-degree to postgraduate qualifications. We also encourage the
concept of lifelong learning – that you should be able to pursue education at any
point in your life, at your own pace and according to your interests.

If you are 18 years of age, you are eligible to register for a broad mix of courses
offered by the OUSL. However, at the moment some programmes have selection
tests as the demand for them always exceed our capacity to cater to them.

What is distance learning?

Unlike in the conventional university system where it is compulsory to attend lectures

and be physically present in the university, the learning method at the OUSL enables
students to study from their homes and workplaces without regularly visiting the
university.

The support you receive as a distance learner includes;

 Printed course modules and audio-visual material written by specialised

Course Teams,
 Online connectivity, and
 Day Schools and seminars to provide face to face interaction with your
lecturers.

When you register with us you are given your course material in printed and/or
audio-visual form. Some of the courses are fully online and you are provided with
instructions on how to use the online courses.

You are also given a study pack consisting of guidelines and procedures, your
assignments and an activity schedule for the relevant academic year. The student
guidelines explain all you need to know about particular programmes and the level
for which you have registered. The activity schedule gives you all the information
regarding your assignment submission dates, Day Schools and examination dates.

www.ou.ac.lk
What are Day Schools?
Day Schools provide opportunities for you to meet your teachers. An academic
member of staff is appointed as a Module Leader for each course. These are
academics from the department who are responsible for the development of the
course and for ensuring that your learning experience is of high quality. Visiting
Academics who work with the Module Leaders support students in all regional and
study centres where Day Schools are held. When you attend a Day School, you are
able to discuss and solve your learning difficulties by discussing them with your Day
School academic. You can also make an appointment and meet the Module Leader
during weekdays or get in touch with them online at any time.

What are Course Materials?

The printed course material you receive when you register with us is called the „Tutor
in Print‟. Sometimes your course material is provided online. The course materials
are a substitute for the lectures conducted in the conventional system. The course
materials are specially written for the OUSL by experts in each field. These include
academic staff from the OUSL as well as academics from other local and sometimes
international universities. They are interactive in style and contain in-text questions,
activities, and review questions for students to reflect on the work and for self-
assessment.

Sometimes your course materials are in the form of audio and visual material
(Interactive Multi Media (IMM) or online material and activities. IMM constitutes a
combination of printed material/ CD/DVD/ online materials which include reading
material and assignments. Fully online courses are offered as well, where all the
teaching and learning takes place through this medium.

The OUSL has developed a network of regional

\

and study centres throughout the island. These Over 30,000

centres are used for the distribution of course registered students
materials, to provide library facilities, for submission are studying at the
of assignments, and sometime for Registration and Open University
Day School sessions. You can check-in at the
regional or study centre nearest to you and register
for your programmes. Many of them pursue
tertiary education while
What is a Study Programme? being employed

A study programme is a combination of compulsory

and elective courses which leads to a Certificate,
Diploma, Degree or Postgraduate degree, on
successful completion.

www.ou.ac.lk
What are Continuing Education Courses?
Continuing Education (CE) courses are offered to students who are registered for
regular study programmes. Students can choose to follow these courses if they wish
to expand their knowledge in areas that interest them. For instance, the BA in Social
Sciences offers a range of CE course for students such as Statistics for Social
Sciences, Soft Skills and Social Harmony etc. Some of these CE courses may be
compulsory for certain Study Programmes.

Open Distance Learning

What is credit rating?

All Study Programmes and courses are given a specific credit rating. This
represents the academic value and work load of a course or a programme. It also
reflects the time that should be spent on the course. At the OUSL, one credit is
defined as 50 notional learning hours. When a credit rating is allocated to a course,
it takes into account the time you need to spend on all the activities that you need to
do to successfully complete a course. This includes reading and understanding
course materials, face to face sessions, continuous assessments, final examinations,
reading reference material etc.

What is a Course Code?

Each course that is offered at the OUSL is assigned a course code. This code gives
a unique identity to the course. Course codes consists of 3 letters and 4 digits for
example, SSU2207. The first two letters of all the courses offered by the SSD will
have the letters „SS‟. The letter „u‟ refers to undergraduate level courses. The OUSL
which is in the process of implementing the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework
(SLQF) is converting its course codes to be compatible with SLQF.
10

www.ou.ac.lk
The SLQF Course Codes
The SLQF is a nationally consistent framework for all higher education qualifications
offered in Sri Lanka. The Department of Social Studies is also converting its course
codes to be compatible with SLQF. The new code for the department will be DS and
will come into effect in January 2018 with the implementation of the Sri Lanka
Qualification Framework (SLQF).

How do I decide on my workload?
If you register for a regular study programme such as the Certificate course, BA or
MA, you may register for a minimum of 9 credits or a maximum of 36 credits per
year. Additionally, you may register for up to 9 credits of CE courses.

When you decide on your workload, please consider the number of hours you will
have to spend for each course. For example, if you register for a total of 30 credits
you will have to allocate at least 28 hours per week for your studies.

You need to assess if you have this kind of time available for studying before you
decide on an appropriate workload for yourself. Remember, one of the advantages
of studying at the OUSL is that you can study at your own pace.

So adjust your workload according to how much time you can commit for
your learning process.

Yes, you can! Students can continue their studies while

living abroad. However, you need to maintain close
contact with your course leader to make sure you fulfil
the assessment requirements of your courses
Can I
continue Final examinations may be organized outside the country
through the relevant Sri Lankan Embassies. Students are
my studies expected to make contact with the Sri Lankan embassy in
those countries and obtain their consent to hold
while living examinations when necessessary. This needs to be done
well in advance to enable the Examination Divison of the
OUSL to make arrangemetns through the Ministry of
abroad? Foreign Affairs.

Alternatively, the students can contact a nearby

university of their choice and get their consent to
supervise the examination. The candidate will be
expected to meet the costs of these examinations abroad.
These costs may vary considerably.

However, please note that the possibility of holding examinations in a foreign country
depends on the willingness of an institution (university/embassy) agreeing to hold
them. We cannot guarantee that these institutions will agree.

Student Life
One of the advantages of the OUSL is that you will be part of an
extremely diverse student population. We have students from all over
the country, employed students, and students from different age groups
and ethnic backgrounds. This will give you the opportunity to interact
with different types of people and to share experiences with them.

While studying at the department of Social

Studies we have broadened our horizons through a
global perspective and developed a lasting passion
for learning.

www.ou.ac.lk
My situation is a good example of how the OUSL
is flexible, open and willing to give a chance for
anybody to become one of their students. I lived in Italy
since I was 1-year-old and after completing a Diploma
in Hospitality Management and a Degree in
Economics, I decided that it was time for me to come
back to my motherland. After coming here, I started to
work in my family business and at the same time I
wanted to continue my studies. I knew this course
was going to give me a chance to study in-depth
according to my interests.
Milinda I will never forget my first Day School; higher education
Gunasekara wasn‟t something new for me, but it was my very first
B.A Level 3 Sri Lankan educational experience. It was very
Student interesting to see such a diversity of students, from
2016/17 different ethnicities, different ages, some that have just
completed A‟ levels and others who were working,
Society and married and have kids. Study material is excellently
Culture Studies written in a simple way with a clear focus about the
Stream topics. My first year is almost over; I can‟t deny that it
was a hard learning experience. We have to make our
studies fit like pieces of a puzzle with the rest of our life
commitments. But this allowed me not only to learn so
much and fulfil my academic goals, but also I learned
what is time management, which is something
essential for a successful life. This was my first year in
this country and I don‟t exaggerate when I say that
OUSL helped me to integrate in this society. What I
learned at the University helped me to understand why
things are the way they are, it makes me hunger for
knowledge and I‟m looking forward to learning more in
the coming years. I‟m very proud to study in an institute
where, as I said before, your age, the place you live
and your occupation don‟t matter. If you are keen to
study, OUSL will give you the best chance

Students who have studied at the Department of Social

You might think that being a

distance mode student, you will
not be able to experience a
„batch‟ like your peers in the
conventional system. That is
not true, as we encourage you
to take an active part in the
student life of the university, to
engage with other students and
to make the fullest use of the
extremely unique opportunities
presented through the diversity
of students of the OUSL.

The university regularly

hosts activities. The
SSD for example hosts
various seminars, talks
and film shows.

These are often open to

students as well. These are
advertised within the
department and on the website.

The propitious experience at OUSL!

I am a practicing psychological counsellor. I found my

way to the Open University for few reasons. The main
one being the distance learning mechanism available
at the university. Next is the uncomplicated entry path
for different fields of studies. I enrolled myself to study
Politics & International Relations which was an entirely
new field of study for me. I came across friendly, young
lecturers who were very talented and supportive while
some were senior lecturers who are inspirational
personnel in their respective fields. Altogether they
Chamalee made the learning experience challenging to meet high
Ahangama standards of education and to produce a good group of
B.A Level 5 practitioners to the field of Social Sciences: not to
Student become some graduate. The other reason that made
2016/17 me interested about OUSL is the availability of a
continuous learning pathway. The assessment
Politics and methods were also very effective given the variety of
International methods they used including Take-Home Assignments,
Studies Stream Closed Book Tests, Open Book Tests, MCQ Tests,
Structured Essay Type Tests, Essay Type Tests, Oral
Presentations, Project or Internship and most
interestingly the Online Assignments. There were also
enough opportunities for the participants of the course
to hang around and network: near the milk bar,
canteen is some places I used to hangout. The library
facility is also an invaluable facility that helped me so
much not only for the relevant subjects of the course
but to explore many other fields of interest.

16

www.ou.ac.lk
Does the Open University have student unions?
Yes. OUSL has its own student union. We encourage you to find out about the
student union and to get involved. Our faculty believes in student rights and two
students are elected from the HSS Faculty to represent student issues to the Faculty
Board. Student representation at the Faculty Board is a medium through which you
can ensure that your interests are represented to the faculty and get heard.

The effectiveness of this

opportunity that is
presented to you depends
on the level of interest you
take in making sure your
views are represented
among the student body.
Open Distance Learning

Using these student unions, you

can establish a relationship with
the University in order to have
access to university facilities
and services easily.

So we encourage you to network and get to know your fellow students and to
organise yourself!

The change in our attitudes and approaches to learning

is remarkable.

Having received my results for the GCE
Advanced Level Examinations in 2015, I had to make
the hard choice of what degree to follow and most
importantly which university to choose. Considering the
pros and cons of many universities I wished to enrol, I
am glad to have chosen the Open University of Sri
Lanka. The main advantage of the distance learning
methods facilitated by the OUSL is that it allows you to
fit your learning around your work and home life. The
idea of having to spend considerable amount of time
travelling and attend long hours of lectures everyday
Shifa Fawas wasn‟t something that sounded pleasing to me.

B.A Level 3 Distant learning, though may be a new concept here in

Student Sri Lanka, is something that is getting popular world-
2016/17 wide due to its high level of flexibility and ability to
study while working. The high quality and self-study
Society and facilitating course materials, lecturers who can be
Culture Studies contacted anytime via email and the well-equipped and
Stream resourceful library added to the benefits I personally
experienced. The calm environment and the green
surroundings within the university also makes the
learning process more interesting.

Being a part of a class with a mix of students from

different ethnicities and cultures has broadened our
ways of thinking. We are encouraged to think in
different ways and break stereotypes. The fruitful
discussions in day schools help in the expression of
various ideas and we are always taught to respect
differences in thinking and in opinions.

All in all, choosing to do my BA in Social Sciences at

OUSL is one of the most significant decisions I will
never regret having taken!

Assessment and Evaluation
There are two types of assessments at the OUSL. They are namely,
Continuing Assessments (CA) and Final Examinations.

Continuing Assessments (CA)

Your progress in a course that you are registered for is assessed

periodically through continuous assessment tests. There can be several
CAs per course.

There are different types of CAs such as

Open Book Tests (OBTs), Multiple
Choice Questions (MCQs), Close Book
Tests (CBTs), Oral Presentations and
Learning Journals. You may also be
assessed on your participation in online
forums. Oral presentations can be
conducted in three methods such as group presentations, poster
presentations and in oral form.

A percentage of your average mark from all the CA components will be

included in your final grade. For example, in the BA Study Programme,
50% of your final grade will be calculated from your CA marks.

Final Examinations

At the end of each semester

you will have Final
Examinations. If you fail to
sit for a Final Examination
you will have to re-register
for the course in the
subsequent year. If you get
a FA, RE or RF grade, it
means that you will have to
register for that particular
subject once again. When you re-register for a subject, you will be
required to repay for the course.

qualities that undermine human existence.

households, and individuals allocate their scarce resources. Our discipline

behavior to predict responses to changes in policy and market conditions.
Second, we use analytical models to investigate these changes. While
providing a good knowledge on the principles of Economics. This area of
study will also expose you to different specialised branches of Economic
analysis that would help you to understand issues of development through
an economic perspective. You will gain valuable insights into the various
critical economic events, and be an informed participant in the modern
economy.

political theory. This is an excellent platform if you are interested in the

values, political institutions, global politics; and politics at the level of
